Achimota Forest guide

Achimota Forest is the closest thing Accra has to a proper green lung. Manage your expectations and it is a genuinely pleasant break from the city's heat and horns.

The short answer

  • Achimota Forest is a reserve of a few hundred hectares on the northern edge of Accra, near Achimota.
  • It is best for walking, jogging, birdsong and fresh air rather than big wildlife or manicured gardens.
  • Facilities are basic and access to some areas can change, so it pays to check before you go.
  • The Achimota Eco Park section offers marked trails and a calmer, greener atmosphere close to the city.
  • For a fuller botanical garden day, Aburi on the Akuapem ridge is the better-developed option.
  • We build it in as a short, easy stop on an Accra itinerary rather than a full day out.

What Achimota Forest really is

Achimota Forest is a reserve of a few hundred hectares wedged into the northern side of Accra, roughly where Achimota meets the Ofankor and Neoplan side of town. In a city this built-up, keeping any large stand of trees is remarkable, and the forest has survived years of pressure and public debate over its boundaries and whether parts of it should be built on. What you get today is a genuine patch of green within the metro, not a national park.

Set your expectations correctly and you will enjoy it. This is a place for a walk under the canopy, some birdsong and a break from traffic noise, rather than a safari. The trees are mostly regenerated secondary forest with some plantation stands, and the appeal is simply the shade, the quiet and the change of air after the concrete and horns of central Accra.

If wildlife is what you are after, our Mole National Park safari guide is where to look, since Achimota is about greenery rather than game. For a broader city plan, the things to do in Accra guide sets the scene and shows where a short forest stop fits among the bigger sights.

What is realistic to do there

The honest answer is: walk, breathe and slow down. The developed part, sometimes signposted as the Achimota Eco Park, has cleared trails and open lawns where families picnic and runners do laps in the cooler part of the day. Early morning is best, both for temperature and for birds, which are the main wildlife you will notice.

Do not expect a slick visitor centre, cafes or reliable signage throughout. Facilities are basic and some sections may be fenced or under development depending on when you come, so we always confirm current access before we set out. Wear closed shoes, bring water and insect repellent, and treat it as a gentle nature stop rather than a headline attraction. Our Ghana packing list covers the practical kit.

Photographers should come at first light, when the low sun filters through the canopy and the birds are active. Beyond that, it is a good spot to stretch your legs on arrival day when jet lag has you awake early and the rest of the city is still asleep. Keep it simple and short and it delivers exactly what it promises.

When to go and how it fits a trip

Come early. Accra's heat builds fast, and by mid-morning the forest is warm and the light is harsh for photos. The dry season, roughly November to March, gives you firmer paths underfoot; in the wetter months trails can get muddy and the mosquitoes are keener. Our best time to visit Ghana guide breaks the seasons down.

Because a visit only takes an hour or two, Achimota works best as one green stop among several. We often pair it with Aburi Botanical Gardens up on the Akuapem ridge, which is far more developed and worth the drive, or with a city sightseeing loop. See our Aburi Gardens and Akuapem ridge guide for that combination.

How we handle it

As a Kasoa-based team who run Accra trips every week, we treat Achimota as a light, flexible stop. We pick you up in an air-conditioned vehicle, check on the day which entrances and trails are open, and keep the visit short and comfortable so it complements the rest of your itinerary rather than eating it.

If you enjoy walking, we can build a proper day around it, combining Achimota with the Aburi hills and a stretch of the Akuapem ridge, where the air is cooler and the views over the plains are worth the climb. For keener hikers, our hiking in Ghana guide points to bigger trails outside the capital, and getting around Ghana transport explains why a private car saves so much time when you are stitching several stops together on Accra's unpredictable roads.

Flying into Kotoka? We meet arrivals in comfortable air-conditioned cars and can ease you into a gentle first outing like this. Arrange an airport pickup with your flight details.

Plan a calm morning outdoors

Achimota Forest will not fill a whole day on its own, and we will always tell you that honestly. What it does well is give you an hour of shade, birdsong and quiet without leaving the city, and it slots neatly into a wider Accra plan.

Questions people ask

Is Achimota Forest worth visiting?

For a short nature break close to central Accra, yes. It is not a wildlife destination and facilities are basic, but it offers rare green space and quiet in the city. We are always honest that it works best as one stop among several rather than a full day.

Can I see animals there?

Do not expect big game. The main wildlife is birds, along with the occasional small creature. If it is animals you want, we would steer you towards Mole National Park in the north instead, and can plan that trip for you.

How do I book a visit?

Send us your dates and group size through the website or WhatsApp. We reply with a plan and a tailored quote, and a small deposit confirms your booking. Because access can change, we check current conditions before your visit.

Can you combine it with other places?

Yes, and we usually recommend it. Achimota pairs naturally with Aburi Botanical Gardens, the Akuapem ridge or a city sightseeing loop. Every itinerary is private and built around what you want to see.

What should I bring?

Closed walking shoes, water, sun protection and insect repellent. Come early to beat the heat. Our Ghana packing list covers the rest, and your driver-guide will advise on the day.

Is it suitable for families or older travellers?

The developed trails are gentle and mostly flat, so it suits most people if you keep the visit short and go in the cool of the morning. Tell us who is coming and we will set an easy pace.

Written by Abdul, founder of Ghana Travel & TourI started this agency in Kasoa Opeikuma, Central Region, in 2020. Our drivers meet flights at Kotoka, our homes are the ones we let in Kasoa, and the routes described here are the ones we run ourselves.

What I know about Ghanaian travel comes from doing it: filing passport and visa applications, booking flights and hotels, collecting people from arrivals at two in the morning, and driving the Accra, Tema, Cape Coast and Kumasi runs week after week. Where this guide describes how something works, it is because we have done it.

Rules, fees and timetables in Ghana change. I have deliberately not quoted figures that go stale — where a number matters I name the office to confirm it with. If you spot something out of date, tell me and we will fix it.
