Why Easter is a great time for Africa
Easter is a moveable feast, landing anywhere from late March to late April, and it catches Africa at a genuinely rewarding moment. Because the continent straddles the equator, the weather story changes as you move across it, so choosing well matters more than at almost any other time of year.
In North Africa — Morocco and Egypt — Easter coincides with a gentle spring: warm days, cool evenings and manageable desert heat. Down in Southern Africa, Cape Town is easing into a golden autumn, ideal for the Cape winelands. The awkward exception is East Africa: Kenya and northern Tanzania see the "long rains" build through April, which can green the landscape beautifully but also muddy the safari tracks.
West Africa, and Ghana in particular, sits in a happy middle. It is the tail of the long dry season, the sun is reliable, sea temperatures are inviting, and the country throws itself into one of its most joyful holidays. Because it is not a mainstream safari destination, you also escape the peak-season crowds and prices that grip East and Southern Africa over the school holidays. Kwahu Easter: Ghana's biggest party
If you want to see Ghanaians celebrate, head to the Kwahu plateau in the Eastern Region over the Easter weekend. Hill towns such as Obo, Atibie, Mpraeso, Abetifi and Nkawkaw fill with families returning home, and the cool highland air, street jams, gospel choirs and highlife bands turn the whole ridge into a four-day festival that runs from Good Friday to Easter Monday.
The headline act is the Kwahu Easter Paragliding Festival, held since 2005 at Odweanoma mountain, where tandem pilots launch visitors out over the green valleys — a rare chance to fly in West Africa. Around it are homecoming parties, food stalls and a warm, welcoming crowd.

It is a domestic celebration first and foremost, which is exactly what makes it special for visitors: this is real Ghanaian culture, warmly shared, not a show put on for tourists. Come with an open mind, join a street party, and you will be pulled into the dancing before long. See our Ghana festivals calendar to plan around it, and read why visit Ghana if you are still weighing it up.
Dry-season sun and easy beaches
Easter arrives near the end of Ghana's main dry season, so the coast is still warm and bright, with sea temperatures that invite you straight in. Accra typically sits around 29-32C, though humidity is beginning to climb and the odd short shower can appear as April wears on — nothing that spoils a beach day.
For a laid-back stretch of sand, the Western Region is hard to beat. Busua is a friendly surf town with gentle waves for beginners, palm-fringed sand and small guesthouses, while nearby lagoons and fishing villages reward slow exploring.

Closer to the capital there are calmer resort beaches for families, and the Ada estuary offers river-meets-sea sunsets, all still warm and swimmable at this time of year. Our Ghana beaches guide maps the best of them so you can pick a stretch that suits your pace.
Heritage, castles and the canopy walk
An Easter break is also an ideal window for Ghana's heritage trail, and the dry weather makes the two-to-three-hour drive west from Accra straightforward. The castles of Cape Coast and Elmina are the emotional heart of the country's history — sobering, beautifully preserved UNESCO sites where knowledgeable guides walk you through the story of the transatlantic slave trade.
Just inland, Kakum National Park offers a very different mood: a canopy walkway strung between giant rainforest trees, best crossed in the cool of the early morning. Together they make a perfect two-day loop.

Plan your Ghana Easter break
Easter is a long weekend the whole country enjoys, so demand for flights, buses and hotels spikes as Ghanaians travel home. Book early, allow for busy roads on Good Friday and Easter Monday, and confirm current visa and eTA requirements before you fly.
Whether you want to fly at Kwahu, laze on a Western Region beach or walk the castles, we build the whole trip around your dates and pace.

Questions people ask
Where should I go in Africa for Easter?
Ghana is a standout for Easter: it is the end of the dry season, so beaches and heritage sites stay warm and bright, and the country hosts its biggest domestic celebration at Kwahu. Morocco and Egypt offer pleasant spring weather too, while East Africa's long rains make April a less certain choice for safari.
What is Kwahu Easter?
Kwahu Easter is Ghana's most famous Easter celebration, held on the cool Kwahu plateau in the Eastern Region. Towns fill with families, street parties and gospel and highlife music, and the Kwahu Easter Paragliding Festival lets visitors take tandem flights over the hills from Good Friday to Easter Monday.
Is April a good time to visit Ghana?
Yes. April is the tail end of the main dry season, so it is warm and mostly sunny, though humidity rises and short showers can begin later in the month. It is an excellent time for beaches, castles and the Easter festivities before the heavier rains set in.
What is the weather like in Ghana at Easter?
Expect warm, humid days around 29-32C on the coast, with plenty of sunshine and occasional brief showers as April progresses. The Kwahu highlands feel noticeably cooler and fresher, which is part of their appeal over the holiday.
Do I need to book early for Easter in Ghana?
It is wise to. Good Friday and Easter Monday are public holidays and huge numbers of Ghanaians travel home, so flights, buses and hotels — especially around Kwahu — fill quickly. Booking your accommodation and transfers ahead avoids stress.
Can I combine Easter festivities with a beach and heritage trip?
Absolutely. A common plan is a day or two at Kwahu for the festival, a heritage stop at the Cape Coast and Elmina castles with Kakum, and a few relaxed days on a Western Region beach such as Busua. We can build this into a single, well-paced itinerary.
What I know about Ghanaian travel comes from doing it: filing passport and visa applications, booking flights and hotels, collecting people from arrivals at two in the morning, and driving the Accra, Tema, Cape Coast and Kumasi runs week after week. Where this guide describes how something works, it is because we have done it.
Rules, fees and timetables in Ghana change. I have deliberately not quoted figures that go stale — where a number matters I name the office to confirm it with. If you spot something out of date, tell me and we will fix it.
