Airport car rental at Kotoka

Landing at Kotoka is a lot smoother when your car, or your car and driver, is already waiting. Here is exactly how airport car rental works in Accra, and what to sort before you fly.

By , founder · Ghana Travel & Tour, KasoaUpdated 24 September 202615 min read

The short answer

  • You can have a hire car, or a car with a driver, waiting for you at Kotoka International Airport Terminal 3 in Accra.
  • Arranging it before you fly is far smoother than trying to sort transport in the arrivals hall after a long flight.
  • For most arrivals we suggest a car with a driver, especially at night or on a first visit, though self-drive is available.
  • We track your flight, so a delay does not leave you stranded, and we meet you as you come through arrivals.
  • Cost depends on the vehicle, whether you take a driver, your onward distance and fuel, not a fixed airport surcharge.
  • Send us your flight details and where you are heading and we will have the right vehicle ready with a tailored quote.

Why arrange your car before you land

The arrivals hall at Kotoka after a long-haul flight is not where you want to be negotiating transport. You are tired, possibly arriving late at night, unfamiliar with fair prices, and surrounded by people offering rides. Sorting your vehicle in advance removes all of that: you clear immigration and baggage, walk out, and step into a car that is already yours, with a price already agreed.

This is the single easiest thing you can do to make a Ghana trip start well. Whether you want a hire car to drive yourself for the coming days or a car with a driver to whisk you to your hotel, arranging it ahead means no haggling and no uncertainty at the worst possible moment for both. As a Kasoa-based team who meet clients at Kotoka every week, we know the terminal, the arrivals flow and the traffic patterns into the city at every hour.

Before you book, it is worth being clear about what you actually need: a straight transfer to your hotel, a driver for your whole stay, or a self-drive car to collect at the airport. Each is possible, and each suits a different kind of trip, so it helps to know which you are after.

Kotoka Terminal 3 and how arrivals work

Almost all international flights use Kotoka's Terminal 3, the modern terminal on the north side of the airport in Accra. After you land, you pass through immigration, collect your bags, and clear customs before emerging into the public arrivals area. If you are entitled to an e-visa or a visa on arrival, our guide to the Ghana visa on arrival and travel authorisation explains how that step works so you are not caught out.

The meeting point is the arrivals concourse just outside the customs exit. When you book with us, we agree exactly where to meet, and our driver waits there with a name board so you are easy to find even in a crowd. There is no wandering the car parks looking for a vehicle.

Because arrivals can bunch up when several flights land together, and immigration queues vary, we build in sensible waiting time and, crucially, track your flight so we know when you have actually landed rather than when you were scheduled to. That way a delayed or early flight does not leave you either stranded or feeling rushed.

A car with a driver, or self-drive from the airport

Both are possible at Kotoka, and the right choice depends on your trip and your confidence. For most arrivals, and especially for a first visit or a night landing, we suggest a car with a driver. Accra traffic is heavy and the road layout takes some learning, so after a long flight it is far more relaxing to let someone who knows the city take you to your hotel while you switch off. If you want a driver for your whole stay, we can arrange that too, which many visitors find is the easiest way to see Ghana.

Self-drive from the airport suits confident drivers who want independence for the days ahead and are comfortable picking up an unfamiliar car and heading into city traffic. It is entirely workable, and we set it up so the handover at the airport is quick and clear. Self-drive usually carries a larger deposit and firmer conditions, which reflects the risk.

Our honest steer is to arrive with a driver even if you later switch to self-drive once you have found your feet. It takes the pressure off the one moment, straight off the plane, when you least want it. If road safety is on your mind, our Ghana safety guide sets out what to expect on the country's roads.

Choosing the right vehicle for your arrival

The best vehicle depends on your group and your luggage. For one or two travellers with normal bags, an air-conditioned saloon such as a Toyota Corolla is comfortable, economical and ample for the transfer into the city and for the days that follow.

Families, groups of friends and anyone arriving with a lot of luggage are far better served by a Toyota Hiace, which swallows suitcases and keeps everyone comfortable rather than wedged in with bags on laps after a long flight. For larger parties or where a lot of luggage is involved, a bigger vehicle keeps the arrival civilised.

Tell us how many are in your party and roughly how much luggage you are bringing, and we will size the vehicle so nobody is uncomfortable at the very start of the trip. It is one of those details that is easy to get wrong when booking blind and easy to get right when you simply tell us the numbers in advance.

What to arrange before you fly

Setting this up properly before departure takes only a short exchange of messages, and it makes all the difference on arrival. The key things we need are your flight number and arrival date and time, the number of passengers and rough luggage, where you are heading first, and whether you want a straight transfer, a driver for your stay, or a self-drive car.

With your flight number we can track the flight, so we are there when you actually land. Knowing your destination, whether a hotel in Osu, an address in East Legon or somewhere further out, lets us plan the route and quote the onward distance honestly. If you are still choosing where to stay, our guide to where to stay in Accra can help you decide.

It is also worth confirming your visa or travel authorisation situation before you fly, since that affects how long you spend in the arrivals process. We will send you the meeting point details and a clear quote in advance, so everything is agreed and there is nothing left to sort out in a tired scramble at the terminal.

How delivery, meeting and collection work

On the day, the process is simple. We monitor your flight and have the driver at Kotoka in good time. As you come out of customs into the arrivals concourse at Terminal 3, the driver is waiting with a name board at the agreed spot. There is a warm welcome, help with the bags, and you are on your way, whether that is a short hop to an Osu hotel or a longer run out of the city.

For self-drive, the handover happens at the airport: we go through the vehicle with you, confirm the paperwork, and make sure you are comfortable before you set off. For a driver arrangement, you simply relax and let us drive.

At the end of your trip, the return works the same way in reverse. We can collect you from your hotel and take you back to Kotoka in good time for your departure, or receive a self-drive vehicle back at the airport or your hotel. Our overview of getting around Ghana shows how these airport transfers fit into moving around the country more broadly.

Night arrivals and delayed flights

Many long-haul flights into Accra land in the evening or the small hours, and this is exactly when having a pre-arranged car matters most. Arriving at midnight to an unfamiliar city, tired and possibly with family in tow, is not the moment to be sorting transport from scratch. With a car and driver already waiting, a late arrival becomes a non-event: you walk out, you are met, you go.

Delays are handled by flight tracking. Because we watch your actual flight rather than the timetable, a two-hour delay or an early arrival does not catch us out; we simply adjust when the driver is there. We build in reasonable waiting time for immigration queues and baggage, which can be slower when several flights land together.

If something unusual happens, a missed connection, a diverted flight, a change of plan, you have a direct number and can reach us on WhatsApp to sort it out. That contact, agreed before you travel, is part of what makes a night arrival at Kotoka genuinely stress-free rather than an anxious guessing game.

Turning your arrival into a whole trip

An airport pickup does not have to be a one-off transfer. For many of our clients, meeting them at Kotoka is simply the first step of a trip we handle end to end: the same driver and vehicle that collect you can take you to Cape Coast the next day, up to Kumasi, or on a wider loop, so you never have to think about transport again.

This continuity is one of the quiet advantages of arranging your pickup with a full tour operator rather than a bare transfer service. The driver who meets you gets to know your pace and preferences, the vehicle is sized for your group and luggage from the outset, and everything is quoted as one honest package rather than a string of separate fares. It also means a single point of contact for the whole trip if plans shift.

Equally, if all you want is the transfer into the city, that is completely fine, and we treat it with the same care. Tell us whether the pickup stands alone or opens a longer trip, and we will plan accordingly, so the arrival fits neatly into whatever comes next rather than being an isolated errand.

What drives the cost of airport car rental

We do not quote a single airport rate, because an honest figure depends on what you need. The factors are the vehicle class, whether you take a driver, the onward distance from the airport, any waiting time, and fuel. A short transfer to a nearby hotel is very different from a driver for a week or a self-drive car for a fortnight.

There is no hidden airport surcharge in the way some travellers fear; we simply quote the vehicle and the service you have asked for. Distance matters because a run to a central Accra hotel differs from a transfer out to Tema, Aburi or straight down to the coast. Season and the hour of arrival can play a small part in availability. We are transparent about all of it.

For a broader sense of how transfers and transport sit within a whole trip budget, our trip cost breakdown is a useful reference. Send us your flight details and where you are heading and we will send a clear, itemised quote for the arrival and anything beyond it.

How to book your Kotoka pickup

Booking is quick and we keep it human. Message us with your flight number, arrival date and time, the number of passengers and rough luggage, where you are heading, and whether you want a transfer, a driver for your stay, or a self-drive car. That is all we need to have the right vehicle waiting.

We confirm the meeting point at Terminal 3, send you a clear quote, and give you a direct contact number for the day. There are no surprises at arrivals, no haggling, and no uncertainty about who is meeting you. It is worth booking a little ahead where you can, especially for group arrivals or busy periods, though we can often arrange things at short notice too.

Questions people ask

Can I have a car waiting for me at Kotoka Airport?

Yes. We meet travellers at Kotoka International Airport Terminal 3 every week, with either a car and driver or a self-drive vehicle ready to collect. When you book, we agree the meeting point in the arrivals concourse, and the driver waits there with a name board so you are easy to find. Arranging it before you fly means you walk out of customs and straight into your car, with the price already agreed and no haggling.

What happens if my flight is delayed?

We track your actual flight rather than the scheduled time, so a delay or an early arrival does not leave you stranded or waiting anxiously. We adjust when the driver is at the terminal based on when you really land, and we build in reasonable waiting time for immigration and baggage. If something more unusual happens, you have a direct number and can reach us on WhatsApp to sort it out, which is why we set up that contact before you travel.

Should I get a driver or self-drive from the airport?

For most arrivals, and especially a first visit or a night landing, we suggest a car with a driver, because Accra traffic and road layout take some learning and it is far more relaxing to be driven after a long flight. Self-drive is available for confident drivers who want independence, and we make the airport handover quick and clear. A common approach is to arrive with a driver and switch to self-drive later once you have found your feet.

How much does airport car rental at Kotoka cost?

There is no single fixed airport rate, because the cost depends on the vehicle, whether you take a driver, the onward distance, any waiting time and fuel. A short transfer to a nearby hotel differs from a driver for a week or a self-drive car for a fortnight. There is no hidden airport surcharge; we simply quote the service you ask for. Send us your flight details and destination and we will send a clear, itemised quote.

Is a deposit needed, and is it safe and reliable?

For a driven transfer, terms are simple and we confirm them when we quote; self-drive usually involves a security deposit or hold that protects the vehicle and is returned when it comes back in good order. We are a Kasoa-based team who do this every week, we track flights, agree prices in advance and meet you with a name board, so there are no surprises. We will always explain clearly what is required before you commit.

Can you take me straight to Cape Coast or elsewhere from the airport?

Yes. We can drive you onward from Kotoka to wherever you are heading, whether that is a central Accra hotel, out to Tema or Aburi, or straight down to Cape Coast or the coast. Just tell us your onward destination when you book and we will plan the route, quote the distance honestly and have the right vehicle ready. Many visitors find starting with a guided drive from the airport is the easiest introduction to the country.

Written by Abdul, founder of Ghana Travel & TourI started this agency in Kasoa Opeikuma, Central Region, in 2020. Our drivers meet flights at Kotoka, our homes are the ones we let in Kasoa, and the routes described here are the ones we run ourselves.

What I know about Ghanaian travel comes from doing it: filing passport and visa applications, booking flights and hotels, collecting people from arrivals at two in the morning, and driving the Accra, Tema, Cape Coast and Kumasi runs week after week. Where this guide describes how something works, it is because we have done it.

Rules, fees and timetables in Ghana change. I have deliberately not quoted figures that go stale — where a number matters I name the office to confirm it with. If you spot something out of date, tell me and we will fix it.
