Why Ghana works for an anniversary

An anniversary deserves somewhere that feels personal rather than off-the-shelf, and that is exactly where Ghana shines. You can trade a crowded resort for a quiet stretch of Atlantic coast, a lantern-lit dinner of freshly grilled fish, and days that unfold at your own pace. The warmth here is genuine, and small moments tend to stay with couples long after the trip.

As a team based in Kasoa who arrange these trips every week, we find the sweet spot is balance: a little culture, a little adventure and plenty of unhurried time together. You do not need to see everything. Choosing two or three places you truly enjoy beats a rushed dash across the country.

Timing matters too. The drier months tend to be kinder for coastal days and evenings out, so it is worth glancing at our best time to visit Ghana guide before you fix dates. If you are marking a really big milestone, it pairs beautifully with our Ghana honeymoon guide and, for something more indulgent, our notes on luxury Ghana travel.

Beach days in the Western Region

For switching off completely, the Western Region coastline is our favourite. Busua is a gentle, low-key beach village where the days are simple: swim, read, walk the sand and watch the fishing boats come in. It is the kind of place where you lose track of the clock, which is precisely the point on a romantic escape.

Nearby you can wander to Butre for its lagoon and old fort, or simply stay put and let the rhythm of the village carry you. Evenings are for grilled lobster or red snapper with your feet almost in the sand. Do keep an eye on the sea conditions and swim sensibly, as currents vary along this coast.

The drive west also passes close to Cape Coast, which makes a moving half-day if you want a thread of history in the trip. Our Cape Coast and Elmina castles guide explains what to expect and how to approach it respectfully. If you would rather stay closer to the capital, our Ghana beaches guide lays out the options from Kokrobite to Ada.

A slow sunset at Ada

If there is one moment to plan around, make it sunset over the water at Ada, where the Volta River meets the sea. A quiet boat drift as the light turns gold is the sort of understated romance that beats any staged photo backdrop. Some lodges sit on their own island or sandbar, so you wake to water on both sides.

Ada pairs naturally with the Western Region on a longer loop, or works as a standalone weekend if your time is short. Boat outings and ferry schedules shift with the season and the tide, so confirm current timings locally and build in a little flexibility rather than a tight connection.

A simple five to seven day shape

Here is a shape we return to for couples. It leaves room to breathe rather than cramming every day.

  • Days 1 to 2: Settle in near Accra, enjoy a good dinner and ease off the travel legs.
  • Days 3 to 4: Head west to Busua for beach time, with an optional stop at Cape Coast on the way.
  • Days 5 to 6: Swing across to Ada for the estuary and that sunset.
  • Day 7: Slow morning, then back to Accra for your flight.

Want a fuller framework? Borrow the pacing from our Ghana 7-day itinerary and simply lean it towards rest. Distances look short on a map but roads and traffic add time, so a private driver keeps the mood calm.

Making the days feel effortless

The difference between a lovely anniversary and a stressful one usually comes down to logistics. A private car and driver means no haggling, no wrong turns and no watching the clock on a shared minibus. It is a small cost for a big lift in comfort, especially on a milestone trip. If you want to weigh the alternatives honestly, our getting around Ghana transport guide sets them out.

Book your stays with a clear sense of what you want, quiet seclusion or lively convenience, and read recent reviews rather than only the photos. Keep some cash for smaller places, carry sun protection, and drink bottled or treated water. Prices, room availability and opening hours change through the year, so please confirm current details directly before you lock anything in.

Arrive to a friendly face. Skip the arrivals scramble with a private meet-and-greet driver. Arrange airport pickup and start the trip relaxed.

Let us plan your celebration

An anniversary in Ghana can be as calm or as adventurous as you like, and the best trips are the ones tailored to the two of you rather than a template. We live here, we run these routes every week, and we are happy to be honest about what will and will not suit you.

Tell us your dates, your budget and the mood you are after, and we will build something that fits. You can reach us on WhatsApp for quick questions too.

Ready when you are. Let us shape your anniversary from arrival to your final sunset. Plan my trip or arrange airport pickup and we will take care of the rest.

Questions people ask

How many days do you need for an anniversary trip to Ghana?

Five to seven days is comfortable. That gives you a couple of beach days, one cultural highlight and a memorable sunset without rushing. If you only have a long weekend, focus on a single region such as Ada or the Western Region rather than trying to cover both.

What is the most romantic place in Ghana for couples?

It depends on your style. Busua in the Western Region is our pick for quiet beach seclusion, while Ada offers the best sunsets where the Volta meets the sea. Couples wanting comfort with character often combine the two.

When is the best time of year for a romantic trip to Ghana?

The drier months, roughly November to March, are generally the easiest for coastal travel and sunshine. Weather varies year to year, so treat this as a guide and check a current forecast closer to your dates.

Is it easy to get around Ghana as a couple?

Yes, especially with a private driver, which we recommend for a relaxed trip. Public transport is workable but adds time and stress. A car and driver lets you enjoy the journey and stop where you like.

Do we need to book restaurants and lodges in advance?

For the smaller beach lodges and popular weekends, booking ahead is wise as good rooms fill quickly. Always confirm current rates and availability directly, as prices and opening hours change through the year.

Can you plan a private anniversary itinerary for us?

Yes. We are a Ghana-based team who arrange these trips every week and can tailor the pace, stays and experiences to suit you. Share your dates and budget and we will build a plan, then refine it together.

Written by Abdul, founder of Ghana Travel & TourI started this agency in Kasoa Opeikuma, Central Region, in 2020. Our drivers meet flights at Kotoka, our homes are the ones we let in Kasoa, and the routes described here are the ones we run ourselves.

What I know about Ghanaian travel comes from doing it: filing passport and visa applications, booking flights and hotels, collecting people from arrivals at two in the morning, and driving the Accra, Tema, Cape Coast and Kumasi runs week after week. Where this guide describes how something works, it is because we have done it.

Rules, fees and timetables in Ghana change. I have deliberately not quoted figures that go stale — where a number matters I name the office to confirm it with. If you spot something out of date, tell me and we will fix it.
