Ghana's coast, region by region

Ghana's coastline runs for hundreds of kilometres, and its beaches vary far more than visitors expect. In the west you get golden bays, palm-fringed sand and a laid-back surf scene. Around Cape Coast, history and the ocean meet, with resorts within reach of the famous castles. To the east, Ada offers a gentler world where the Volta River meets the sea.

Choosing well means matching the region to the mood you want, and to how far you are happy to travel from Accra. Our dedicated guide to Ghana's beaches goes deeper on each stretch, and if you are still deciding between coast and city, our overview of where to stay in Accra is a useful counterpoint before you commit to a longer drive.

The Western Region and Busua

The Western Region is Ghana's beach heartland. Busua is the best-known spot — a relaxed village with a long, swimmable bay, a friendly surf culture and a cluster of lodges and resorts right on the sand. Nearby Butre, Axim and Cape Three Points offer quieter, more rustic escapes for those who want to properly get away from it all.

Resorts here range from simple, characterful beach lodges to more polished properties with pools and good kitchens, so there is something for most budgets. It is a longer drive from Accra, so most people stay at least two nights to make the journey worthwhile. A car with driver makes the trip easy — see our guide to hiring a car with a driver in Ghana.

Ada and the eastern coast

Ada Foah, where the Volta River meets the Atlantic, is a different kind of coastal escape. Here the draw is the estuary: calm lagoon waters, sandbars, boat trips and some of the finest sunsets in the country. Resorts range from eco-lodges on the sandspit to comfortable riverside properties, several reachable by a short boat ride that adds to the sense of retreat.

Ada is closer to Accra than the Western Region, which makes it a popular weekend choice for families and couples alike. It suits anyone after a peaceful, watery setting rather than surf, with gentle activities like kayaking and island picnics. Getting around the region is straightforward with a little planning — our guide to getting around Ghana covers the options.

When to go and what to expect

The drier months, roughly November to March, are the easiest time for a beach trip, with more reliable sunshine and calmer conditions. The wetter middle of the year still has fine days, and can mean lower rates and quieter beaches, but pack for the odd downpour. Surf conditions in the west are often best in the middle of the year, so time it to your priorities.

Standards vary widely from one resort to the next. Some beach lodges are charmingly rustic — think fans, bucket showers and candlelit evenings — while others offer air conditioning, pools and full restaurants. Neither is wrong; just know which you are booking so it matches your expectations. Our Ghana packing list helps you prepare for both the beach and the occasional rain shower.

Getting there comfortably

Most of Ghana's best beaches are a two to five hour drive from Accra, and the coastal roads reward a comfortable vehicle and a driver who knows them. Rather than wrestle with public transport and connections while carrying luggage, most visitors book a car with driver, which turns the journey into part of the holiday and lets you stop where you like along the way.

Start well by arranging your arrival too. A pre-booked airport pickup means you are met at Kotoka and can head straight for the coast if you wish, or spend a night in the city first. We can plan the whole route — airport, city night if needed, then resort — so nothing is left to chance and no time is wasted.

Let us book your coastal escape

The right beach resort depends on details that are hard to judge from photos — the state of the sand, whether the sea is swimmable, how rustic the rooms really are, and how long the drive truly takes. We know these places first-hand and will steer you to the one that fits your group, budget and the kind of break you want.

We handle the resort booking, a car with driver for the journey, and airport transfers, so your only decision is when to go in for a swim. From a laid-back weekend at a beach holiday in Ghana to a longer coastal tour, we make it effortless and take care of every detail.

Questions people ask

Where are the best beaches in Ghana?

The Western Region around Busua, Butre and Axim leads for classic beach and surf, while Ada offers calm lagoon settings and sunsets. The Cape Coast area combines beaches with history. We will match the coast to your trip.

When is the best time to visit the coast?

Roughly November to March is driest and easiest for a beach trip. The wetter months still have fine days and lower rates, but expect occasional rain. Surfers in the west often prefer the middle of the year.

How do I get to the beach resorts?

Most are a two to five hour drive from Accra. A car with driver is the most comfortable option, letting you stop along the way. We can arrange the vehicle, driver and airport pickup as one package.

What are the resorts like?

They range from rustic beach lodges with fans and simple rooms to full-service resorts with air conditioning, pools and restaurants. Both have their charm. We will tell you honestly what to expect before you book.

How much does a beach resort cost?

Rates vary by resort, room and season, so we avoid fixed figures. Peak-season and full-service properties cost more. We will confirm the actual rate before you commit, with no hidden extras.

Can you arrange everything, including transport?

Yes. We book the resort, provide a car with driver for the journey and arrange airport transfers, so the whole coastal trip is handled end to end. Just tell us your dates and preferences.

Written by Abdul, founder of Ghana Travel & TourI started this agency in Kasoa Opeikuma, Central Region, in 2020. Our drivers meet flights at Kotoka, our homes are the ones we let in Kasoa, and the routes described here are the ones we run ourselves.

What I know about Ghanaian travel comes from doing it: filing passport and visa applications, booking flights and hotels, collecting people from arrivals at two in the morning, and driving the Accra, Tema, Cape Coast and Kumasi runs week after week. Where this guide describes how something works, it is because we have done it.

Rules, fees and timetables in Ghana change. I have deliberately not quoted figures that go stale — where a number matters I name the office to confirm it with. If you spot something out of date, tell me and we will fix it.
