Best beaches in Africa

The short answer

  • Africa's finest beaches span Zanzibar, the Seychelles, Cape Town, Mozambique and West Africa's Atlantic coast.
  • Indian Ocean islands offer turquoise water and reefs, but at high prices and with long flights.
  • Ghana's Atlantic coast is warm, uncrowded and genuinely affordable, with real surf at Busua.
  • Ghanaian beaches come with living culture nearby, not just resorts behind gates.
  • The dry season, roughly November to March, is the sweet spot for a Ghana beach trip.
  • You can pair beach days with castles, forest canopy walks and Accra's food and music.

Where Africa's best beaches really are

Ask travellers to name Africa's best beaches and the same places come up: Zanzibar and the Tanzanian archipelago, the Seychelles and Mauritius, Mozambique's Bazaruto and Tofo, South Africa's Cape beaches, and the long Atlantic sands of West Africa. They are all wonderful, and they are all different.

The Indian Ocean side delivers glassy turquoise water, coral reefs and picture-book sandbars. The trade-off is cost and distance: the Seychelles and Mauritius are premium destinations reached by long flights, and Zanzibar's best stretches can feel busy in season. South Africa's coast is dramatic but the Atlantic there is cold, and Mozambique's finest beaches take real effort to reach.

So the honest picture is one of trade-offs. The most photogenic water tends to come with the highest bills and the longest journeys, while the wildest, quietest sand often sits where fewer tour operators go. Knowing which you value most is the key to choosing well.

West Africa is the quieter chapter of the story. Ghana, in particular, offers warm water, wide empty sand and a coastline you can actually explore rather than simply lie on. If you want a beach holiday with texture, it deserves a place on the shortlist alongside the classics — see our wider guide to the best places to visit in Africa.

Ghana's Atlantic coast, up close

Ghana's shore runs for more than 500 kilometres along the Gulf of Guinea, and much of it is refreshingly undeveloped. Near Accra you will find lively town beaches and beach bars; head west and the coast opens into long golden bays backed by coconut palms and fishing villages.

The water is warm all year, and because most beaches are not walled off behind resorts, you share them with local life — canoes coming in at dawn, children playing football at dusk, drumming on a Sunday. It is a beach holiday that still feels connected to a place.

A word of honesty: the Atlantic here has a real swell and, in places, strong currents. Swim where locals swim, ask your host, and take advice seriously. Our full Ghana beaches guide breaks down the best stretches and how to enjoy them safely.

Busua and the surf coast

If there is one beach that captures Ghana's appeal, it is Busua in the Western Region. It has a friendly, low-key village feel, a clutch of guesthouses and cafes along the sand, and consistent, beginner-friendly waves. It has quietly become Ghana's surf capital.

You can take a first lesson here, paddle out at a mellow point break, then eat fresh fish as the sun goes down. Nearby lie Butre lagoon and the stilted village of Nzulezo — read our Western Region guide for the full loop, and our surfing in Ghana notes if you want to catch a wave.

Compared with the polished resort beaches of the Indian Ocean, Busua trades gloss for soul. There are no crowds, prices are gentle, and you leave feeling you met the place rather than just its hotels.

When to go and how to plan

The best time for a Ghana beach trip is the dry season, roughly November to March, when skies are bright and the sea is at its most inviting. The minor dry spell around July and August also works. See our best time to visit Ghana guide for the detail.

Ready for a different kind of beach holiday?

Ghana will not give you the manicured perfection of a Seychelles resort, and it does not pretend to. What it offers instead is warm water, wide empty sand, real waves at Busua, and a culture you can step straight into — at a fraction of the price. For many travellers, that is the better memory.

We are a Ghana-based team who will handle the details so you can simply enjoy the coast. Ask us why so many first-timers fall for the country in our why visit Ghana guide, then let us tailor the trip to you.

Land and relax. We will meet you at the airport and drive you straight to the coast. Arrange a pickup on our airport cars page.

Questions people ask

What are the best beaches in Africa?

Popular favourites include Zanzibar in Tanzania, the Seychelles and Mauritius, Mozambique's Bazaruto and Tofo, and Cape Town's beaches in South Africa. For warm Atlantic water without the crowds or the high prices, Ghana's coast — especially Busua — is an excellent alternative.

Are Ghana's beaches good for swimming?

Many are, but the Atlantic has a genuine swell and some beaches have strong currents. Swim where locals swim, ask your accommodation for advice, and choose calmer, sheltered bays for a relaxed dip. Busua and several Western Region beaches are among the friendliest.

Can you surf in Ghana?

Yes. Busua in the Western Region is Ghana's surf hub, with a mellow point break and beginner-friendly conditions, plus guesthouses that rent boards and offer lessons. It is one of West Africa's most welcoming places to learn.

When is the best time for a Ghana beach holiday?

The main dry season from about November to March offers the brightest weather and best sea conditions. The shorter dry spell in July and August is also good. Avoid the heaviest rains from around May to June if beach time is your priority.

How does Ghana compare with Zanzibar for a beach trip?

Zanzibar has clearer, calmer turquoise water and coral reefs, but can be busy and pricier. Ghana offers warmer, wilder Atlantic beaches that are quieter and cheaper, with living culture and easy add-ons like castles and forest walks. They suit different moods.

What else can I do near the beach in Ghana?

Plenty. Within short drives you can visit the Cape Coast and Elmina castles, walk the Kakum canopy bridges, explore fishing villages and lagoons, and enjoy Accra's food and nightlife. It makes for a varied trip rather than pure beach downtime.

What I know about Ghanaian travel comes from doing it: filing passport and visa applications, booking flights and hotels, collecting people from arrivals at two in the morning, and driving the Accra, Tema, Cape Coast and Kumasi runs week after week. Where this guide describes how something works, it is because we have done it.

Rules, fees and timetables in Ghana change. I have deliberately not quoted figures that go stale — where a number matters I name the office to confirm it with. If you spot something out of date, tell me and we will fix it.
