Sand and history, side by side
The Central Region is where most visitors first meet Ghana's coast, and for good reason. It is close to Accra, it holds the country's most important historic sites, and it has genuinely lovely beaches tucked between them. You can stand inside a UNESCO-listed castle in the morning and be swimming off a palm-lined beach by the afternoon.
As a team based in Kasoa — just up the road — we run this route constantly, and the trick is to treat the beaches and the history as one trip rather than two. Read our Cape Coast and Elmina castles guide and the wider Ghana beaches guide alongside this, then plan the sand around the sites. The region runs roughly from Winneba in the east to Elmina in the west, and almost everything worth seeing sits within a short drive of the coast road.
Anomabo: the easy all-rounder
Anomabo, a fishing town a short drive east of Cape Coast, has one of the region's longest and most appealing beaches. A couple of established beach resorts sit on a broad sweep of sand backed by coconut palms, making it a comfortable base if you want to sleep by the sea and drive in to the castles. The small Fort William stands in the town itself.

Anomabo works well for families and for anyone who wants dependable rooms, meals and a swimmable beach without going far off-grid. The town has a long fishing tradition, and if you wander down to the shore in the early morning you will see the boats coming in and the catch being sorted and sold right there on the sand. Do still take local advice on where the currents are gentlest before you get in — there are no lifeguards anywhere along this coast, and the surf can be deceptively strong.
Brenu, Elmina and the castle coast
For the prettiest swim, head to Brenu Akyinim, a calmer, cleaner beach west of Elmina reached down a rough track off the main road. A small entry fee is usually collected at the community gate, and simple food and drink are on hand at weekends. It is the beach we send people to when they simply want to swim and switch off.

Elmina and Cape Coast themselves are the emotional heart of any visit. St George's Castle at Elmina and Cape Coast Castle are sobering, essential and beautifully sited above the surf, and their guided tours through the dungeons and the Door of No Return stay with you long after. Take a guided tour, give the visit the time it deserves — an hour or more — and try not to schedule a beach party for the same afternoon; the mood asks for a little space. Elmina's own harbour, packed with brightly painted pirogues, is one of the most photogenic scenes on the whole coast.
Kakum and how to plan it
Inland, Kakum National Park adds a completely different day: a rope-and-plank canopy walkway strung high through genuine rainforest. It is an easy add-on from the coast and a firm favourite — see our Kakum canopy walk guide for what to expect and how to beat the crowds.

The Central Region is the simplest coast to reach: around two to three hours from Accra on the main highway. You can self-drive, take a coach to Cape Coast, or — far less stressful — use a driver so you can hop between beach, castle and canopy without watching the clock. Many travellers do the castles and Kakum as a rushed single day from Accra, but staying one or two nights on the coast makes the whole thing far calmer and lets you catch Kakum at opening time before the heat and the crowds build. It slots neatly into an Accra day trip or, done properly, into a longer 7-day itinerary.

Questions people ask
What is the best beach near Cape Coast?
Brenu Akyinim, west of Elmina, is the prettiest swimming beach, while Anomabo just east of Cape Coast has a long sandy beach with established resorts. Both are within an easy drive of the castles.
How far is the Central Region coast from Accra?
Cape Coast and Elmina are roughly two to three hours from Accra on the main highway, making this the easiest of Ghana's coasts to reach. Confirm current road and traffic conditions before travelling.
Can I visit the castles and a beach in one day?
Yes. The castles and beaches sit close together, so a full day easily combines a guided castle tour with a swim. Using a driver makes hopping between sites far less stressful.
Is there an entry fee for Brenu beach?
A small community entry fee is usually collected at the gate, and it can change, so carry some cash and confirm the current amount on arrival.
Is the Central Region good for families?
Yes — Anomabo's resorts offer comfortable rooms, meals and a swimmable beach, and Kakum's canopy walk is a hit with older children. Always take local advice on currents, as there are no lifeguards.
What else is there to do besides beaches?
The Cape Coast and Elmina castles are essential, moving visits, and Kakum National Park's rainforest canopy walk is an easy inland add-on. Together they make a full, varied trip.
What I know about Ghanaian travel comes from doing it: filing passport and visa applications, booking flights and hotels, collecting people from arrivals at two in the morning, and driving the Accra, Tema, Cape Coast and Kumasi runs week after week. Where this guide describes how something works, it is because we have done it.
Rules, fees and timetables in Ghana change. I have deliberately not quoted figures that go stale — where a number matters I name the office to confirm it with. If you spot something out of date, tell me and we will fix it.
