Best day trips from Cape Coast
Cape Coast is one of the best bases in Ghana for short adventures. From canopy walks to castles and quiet beaches, here are the day trips we run most often.
The short answer
- Cape Coast sits within easy reach of Ghana's most-visited sights, making it a superb day-trip base.
- Kakum National Park and its canopy walkway is the classic half-day, best done early.
- Elmina Castle and its fishing harbour are just a short drive west along the coast.
- Quiet beaches like Busua and Butre reward those willing to travel a little further.
- A driver-guide makes these trips smooth; public transport works but eats time.

Why Cape Coast makes a brilliant base
Cape Coast packs an enormous amount into a small stretch of coastline. Within an hour or so you can be walking a rainforest canopy, standing inside a centuries-old castle, or watching fishing boats unload at a working harbour. As a team based in Kasoa who arrange these trips every week, Cape Coast is one of our favourite launch pads because the sights are close, varied and genuinely moving.
Stay two or three nights and you can build a relaxed rhythm: an early trip out, lunch back near the sea, and an afternoon at your own pace. It beats rushing everything in a single long day from Accra, which many travellers try and later regret - the coast road takes its time, and the sights deserve more than a hurried hour each.

If you want the full history in depth, pair this with our Cape Coast and Elmina castles guide before you visit. Working out how to get down here in the first place? Our getting around Ghana transport guide lays out the options honestly.
Kakum National Park and the canopy walk
The single most popular day trip is Kakum National Park, roughly 45 minutes north of Cape Coast. Its famous canopy walkway strings a series of rope bridges high through the rainforest, giving you a bird's-eye view of the forest floor. It is exhilarating and, we will be honest, a little wobbly - which is half the fun.
Go early. Mornings are cooler, quieter and better for spotting birds, and you avoid the midday coach groups. Wear closed shoes and bring water. There are guided forest walks too if you want more than the walkway, and they are a lovely way to learn about the medicinal plants and butterflies. If you have a fear of heights, the walkway is still manageable at your own pace - take it slowly and you will be fine.

For heights, timing and what to expect step by step, see our dedicated Kakum canopy walk guide. Please confirm current opening hours and entry fees on the day, as these do change.
Elmina castle and the fishing harbour
Just 15 to 20 minutes west lies Elmina, home to one of the oldest European-built castles in sub-Saharan Africa. A guided tour here is sobering and important, telling the story of the transatlantic slave trade with honesty and care. It is not a light outing, but it is one many travellers describe as the most meaningful of their trip.
Afterwards, the Elmina fishing harbour right below is a riot of colour and activity, with painted pirogues crammed together and the day's catch coming in. Be respectful with photographs and ask before pointing a camera at people. It is a working harbour, not a set piece, and a friendly greeting in a little Fante or Twi goes a long way. Give yourself time to simply stand and watch the rhythm of the place.
Cape Coast Castle itself is right in town, so you can easily combine both castles across two mornings. We usually suggest spacing the two castle visits out rather than doing them back to back - they are emotionally heavy, and a little breathing room between them helps you take in what you have seen.
Beaches and further-afield escapes
If you fancy sand and slower days, head west to Busua and its neighbour Butre, relaxed beach villages that are a longer drive but well worth it for a full day. Nearer to hand, you will find quieter coves and coconut-lined stretches perfect for an afternoon swim and fresh grilled fish.
Do take local advice on currents before swimming, as some beaches have strong undertow. A calm-looking sea is not always safe, so ask. Busua in particular has become a friendly little hub, with simple guesthouses, beach bars and surf hire, so it works either as a long day trip or an overnight if you fall for the pace.

How far is Kakum from Cape Coast?
Kakum is roughly a 45-minute drive north of Cape Coast. Go early to beat the heat and the coach groups, and confirm current opening times before you set off.
Can I visit Elmina and Kakum in one day?
Yes, many travellers do Kakum in the morning and Elmina in the afternoon. A private driver makes it comfortable, but confirm timings so you are not rushed at either site.

Are the beaches near Cape Coast safe for swimming?
Some are calm and some have strong currents. Always ask locally before swimming and do not judge safety by how the sea looks from the sand.
How many days should I spend in Cape Coast?
Two or three nights lets you enjoy Kakum, both castles and a beach without rushing. Confirm current fees and hours as you plan, since they change.
What I know about Ghanaian travel comes from doing it: filing passport and visa applications, booking flights and hotels, collecting people from arrivals at two in the morning, and driving the Accra, Tema, Cape Coast and Kumasi runs week after week. Where this guide describes how something works, it is because we have done it.
Rules, fees and timetables in Ghana change. I have deliberately not quoted figures that go stale — where a number matters I name the office to confirm it with. If you spot something out of date, tell me and we will fix it.
