Best time to book a Ghana holiday
When you book matters almost as much as when you travel. Here is how far ahead to lock in flights, hotels and a tour, and where the real pressure points fall in the Ghana calendar.
The short answer
- Two clocks matter: when to travel and when to book, and they are not the same.
- December is the busiest, priciest window, so book it four to six months out.
- Book flights early for Christmas and Easter; midweek fares are usually softer.
- The dry season, roughly November to March, is the easiest time to travel.
- The June to August rains bring quieter roads, lower demand and greener scenery.
- Lock a tour once dates are firm; small hotels and top rooms sell out first.

There are two clocks, not one
People muddle two separate questions. One is when to travel to Ghana, which is mostly about weather and crowds. The other is when to book, which is about price, availability and peace of mind. They pull in different directions. December is a wonderful time to be here and the worst time to leave your booking late. The quiet June rains are cheap to book close in but harder on the roads.
As a Kasoa-based team who run these trips every week, we watch both clocks for clients. If your dates are fixed by school holidays or annual leave, the booking timing is what you can actually control, and getting it right is where the savings and the good rooms live. For the travel-timing side, pair this with our best time to visit Ghana and month-by-month weather guides.
Flights: how far ahead to book
Flights into Kotoka are the biggest single cost for most visitors, and the pattern is predictable. Fares climb steeply as December approaches, because the diaspora comes home in huge numbers and demand outstrips seats. For a Christmas or New Year trip, we tell clients to have flights booked by around August, and earlier if they want a specific date. Easter and the July to August summer break tighten too, though less sharply.

A few practical levers actually move the price. Midweek departures usually beat weekend ones. Flexibility of a day or two either side helps. Booking too far out is not always cheaper, but leaving a peak-season flight to the last minute nearly always hurts. Routes and airline schedules change, so always confirm current options directly, and check the visa and ETA position early since that can shape when you commit.
Hotels and the tour itself
Accommodation is where late booking bites hardest, because the best places have the fewest rooms. The one luxury safari lodge at Mole, the good boutique hotels in Accra and the small guesthouses on the coast all sell out in peak weeks long before the flights do. If a specific property matters to you, that is the thing to secure first.

For the tour, once your dates are firm, lock it in. In peak season we ask for four to six months so we can hold the rooms and vehicles you actually want; in quieter months six to ten weeks is usually comfortable. Booking early does not mean paying more, and it means we can build the route properly rather than working around what is left. A ready-made shape like our 7-day itinerary is a good starting point to price.
Peak season: December and Easter
December into early January is Ghana's high point. The weather is dry and comfortable, the festival and events calendar is packed, the beaches and Accra nightlife are at full tilt, and the diaspora is home in force. It is the most joyful time to visit and the most expensive and crowded. Everything, from flights to airport transfers to the best tables, needs booking well ahead.
Easter is a smaller second peak, and specific festivals draw crowds to particular towns, so a great local event can mean full hotels for fifty miles. Check the festivals calendar before you fix dates. The Harmattan, the dry, dusty north-easterly wind that blows from roughly late December into February, is worth knowing about too: cooler and hazier, occasionally enough to affect visibility and flights up north.
The quieter, cheaper windows
If your dates are flexible, the shoulder and low seasons reward you. Late April through early June, and the September to October stretch, tend to be calmer, with easier availability and softer pricing on both flights and rooms. The main rains fall around June and July, and while a heavy downpour can slow the roads, it clears fast, the landscape is at its greenest, and the sites are wonderfully uncrowded.
The honest caveat: booking close-in during the rains can save money, but it is a gamble on availability if you have your heart set on a particular lodge. We are happy to price both a book-now and a wait-and-see option so you can decide with the real trade-offs in front of you.
Get the timing right with us
Timing a Ghana booking well is mostly local knowledge: knowing which weeks tighten, which rooms go first and when a fare is as good as it will get. We do this every week, so let us do it with you rather than leaving you guessing against a search engine.
Message us on WhatsApp with your dates and group size and a real person in Ghana will reply, usually the same day, with advice on when to book and a tailored quote.
Questions people ask
How far in advance should I book a Ghana holiday?
For the December peak, aim to book flights around four to six months ahead and secure hotels and the tour as soon as your dates are firm. In quieter months, six to ten weeks is usually comfortable. The best rooms sell out first, so early booking protects your choices.
When are flights to Ghana cheapest?
Fares are lowest in the quieter shoulder and low seasons, roughly late April to early June and September to October, and highest around Christmas and Easter. Midweek departures and a little date flexibility help. Routes and prices change often, so confirm current fares directly before booking.
Is it worth booking a tour in advance or on arrival?
In peak season, book ahead: vehicles, driver-guides and the best rooms are limited and go early. In quieter months you have more room to arrange things closer in. Booking early does not cost more with us and lets us build the route properly around you.
Can I customise the trip and change dates after booking?
Yes. We build every itinerary around your dates and interests, and we will always try to accommodate changes, though some hotels and flights have their own terms in peak periods. We tell you those terms up front so you know exactly where you stand.
Do I need to pay a deposit to secure my dates?
Usually yes, especially in peak season, because we hold rooms and vehicles on your behalf and some properties require it. We only take what is needed to secure your specific dates and rooms, and we set out the full terms before you pay anything.
How much does a Ghana holiday cost?
It depends on the season, your flights, group size and hotel standard, so we do not quote a fixed figure. Season is the biggest single driver. Send your dates and what you have in mind and we will price a realistic, tailored itinerary.
What I know about Ghanaian travel comes from doing it: filing passport and visa applications, booking flights and hotels, collecting people from arrivals at two in the morning, and driving the Accra, Tema, Cape Coast and Kumasi runs week after week. Where this guide describes how something works, it is because we have done it.
Rules, fees and timetables in Ghana change. I have deliberately not quoted figures that go stale — where a number matters I name the office to confirm it with. If you spot something out of date, tell me and we will fix it.
