Why Ghana's waterfalls are worth the drive
Ghana is not the first place people picture for waterfalls, which is exactly why they feel like a discovery. The best sit in green, hilly country away from the coast, and reaching them is part of the pleasure. As a team based in Kasoa who run these day trips and longer loops most weeks, we can tell you the drive is real, but so is the reward.
Below are the falls we send visitors to most, with honest notes on effort and timing. Most sit in the Volta and Eastern Regions or further north, so they work best as an overnight or a longer loop rather than a quick dash from the beach. If you enjoy being on your feet, pair them with our hiking in Ghana guide, and use the best time to visit Ghana to line up your dates with the water levels, because the same fall can look thunderous in July and gentle in February.
Wli Falls: the tallest in West Africa
Wli Falls, near Hohoe in the Volta Region, is Ghana's headline waterfall and reputed to be the tallest in West Africa. The lower falls are reached by a pleasant, mostly flat walk through forest, crossing little bridges, and end at a wide plunge pool where you can swim. Look up and you may see the resident colony of fruit bats wheeling around the cliffs.

The upper falls are a much tougher, steep hike of a few hours and only for the reasonably fit; take a guide, water and proper shoes. Wli is a long day from Accra, so many visitors stay overnight in the Hohoe area. Entry and guide fees apply and change, so confirm current details on arrival.
Boti Falls: the easiest from Accra
If you want a waterfall without committing a full day to driving, Boti Falls in the Eastern Region, near Koforidua, is the pick. It is a twin fall that, after good rain, flows side by side, and local tradition affectionately calls the pair male and female. A flight of steps leads down to the base, so the effort is short but there is real climbing back up.
Boti pairs well with the nearby Umbrella Rock and the three-headed palm tree if you want to make a fuller half-day of it. It also sits within reach of the Akuapem ridge, so read our Aburi Gardens and Akuapem ridge guide to combine the two. The falls are thinnest in the dry months, so time your visit if the flow matters to you.
Kintampo, Tagbo and other falls
Further north, Kintampo Falls tumbles in tiers through forest and is an easy, rewarding stop if you are heading up towards Mole National Park; it breaks the long journey beautifully. Nearby, the Fuller Falls make a quieter alternative.
Back in the Volta Region, Tagbo Falls near Liati Wote is a lovely guided walk often combined with the climb up Mount Afadja, Ghana's highest peak, which makes a rewarding half-day for anyone reasonably fit. These falls are more remote, so allow time, carry cash for fees and expect basic facilities rather than cafes and car parks. Wherever you go, a short walk and a local guide are the norm, and paths can be slippery after rain, so proper shoes matter more than you might think. Build the north into a longer loop with our Ghana 7-day itinerary.
When to go and how to get there
Water levels are everything. The wet season, roughly April to October, gives the fullest, most dramatic flow, but tracks can turn muddy and some paths get slippery. The dry season makes access easier but the falls thinner, and a few can slow to a trickle at the height of the dry months. Check recent conditions rather than assuming.

None of the major falls are quick hops; Wli and Kintampo are long drives, so plan overnight stops rather than punishing round trips. See getting around Ghana for the realities, and check weather in Ghana month by month before you fix your dates. A comfortable vehicle and an early start make all the difference.
Plan your waterfall adventure
From the towering drop at Wli to the easy charm of Boti and the forest tiers at Kintampo, Ghana's waterfalls are a genuine highlight for anyone happy to travel a little further. Time them with the water, take a guide, and give the drives the room they need.
We would be glad to build a waterfall day or a longer loop around your dates and your appetite for hiking, with a driver who knows the roads and the shortcuts. Tell us what you fancy and we will make it easy.

What I know about Ghanaian travel comes from doing it: filing passport and visa applications, booking flights and hotels, collecting people from arrivals at two in the morning, and driving the Accra, Tema, Cape Coast and Kumasi runs week after week. Where this guide describes how something works, it is because we have done it.
Rules, fees and timetables in Ghana change. I have deliberately not quoted figures that go stale — where a number matters I name the office to confirm it with. If you spot something out of date, tell me and we will fix it.
