Canada work permit from Ghana
A Canadian work permit can be tied to one employer or open to many. Here is how the routes work from Ghana and how to prepare a strong application.
The short answer
- Canadian work permits come in two broad types: employer-specific and open.
- Employer-specific permits often depend on a labour market impact assessment (LMIA).
- You typically need a job offer, a valid passport and proof you will follow the permit terms.
- Fees, eligible programmes and processing times change — confirm on the official IRCC site.
- Biometrics are usually required at the visa application centre in Accra.
- Ghana Travel & Tour helps you organise documents, forms and travel.

The two kinds of work permit
Canada issues two broad categories of work permit. An employer-specific permit ties you to one employer, job and location. An open work permit lets you work for almost any employer and is available only in specific situations, such as for certain spouses or graduates. Knowing which you qualify for shapes your whole application.
Most people applying from Ghana use the employer-specific route, which usually rests on a genuine job offer. There are also specialised streams, such as those for certain skilled trades or international agreements, and the pathway you use affects your eligibility for permanent residence later. As with all immigration matters, the programmes, fees and processing times are revised regularly, so confirm the current position on the official IRCC pages rather than trusting older figures or second-hand advice.

Job offers and the LMIA
For many employer-specific permits, the employer must first obtain a labour market impact assessment, or LMIA. This is a document showing that hiring a foreign worker will not disadvantage Canadian workers. Some jobs and programmes are LMIA-exempt, so ask your employer which applies to your offer.
A legitimate offer names the employer, the role, the salary and the duration, and comes with either a positive LMIA or an offer of employment number where an exemption applies. Be wary of anyone charging you personally for a job offer or promising a permit without an employer — that is a common scam, and a fee-for-offer arrangement can also breach Canadian rules. A genuine employer bears the cost of recruiting you, not the other way around.

Gather your contract, the LMIA or exemption reference and your credentials into one organised file. If your profession is regulated in Canada, you may also need an assessment of your qualifications or a licence to practise, so research this early. Our visa documents checklist helps you keep everything in order.
What you need to prepare
Beyond the job offer, you generally need a valid Ghanaian passport, proof you meet the requirements of the specific job, and evidence that you will leave Canada when your permit ends or move to another lawful status. Depending on the role and your circumstances, a medical examination or police certificate may be required, and jobs in healthcare, childcare or agriculture often trigger a mandatory medical. Book these early, since approved panel physicians and police clearances can take time.
Presentation matters. Consistent names and dates across documents, clear scans and honest answers all reduce the risk of delay or refusal. If you have travelled or worked abroad before, be ready to account for those periods, and never overstate your experience — an officer can check your claims against your references and your history.

Make sure your passport is current, and see common refusal reasons to sidestep avoidable mistakes.
Applying, biometrics and travel
Most applications are made online. You complete the forms, upload your documents, pay the fees and then usually attend a biometrics appointment at the visa application centre in Accra, providing fingerprints and a photograph. Book early, as appointment slots can be limited.
Processing times vary with demand and the country you apply from, so apply in good time and avoid booking non-refundable travel until you have a decision. Keep checking your online account for requests for additional documents, and respond quickly if the visa office asks for more. If you are also considering studying later, our study abroad guidance explains how the study and work routes can connect over time.

Questions people ask
What is the difference between open and employer-specific permits?
An open permit lets you work for almost any employer; an employer-specific permit ties you to one job and employer. Open permits are limited to certain situations.
Do I always need an LMIA?
No. Many employer-specific permits require one, but some jobs and programmes are LMIA-exempt. Ask your employer which applies to your offer.
Can I bring my family?
In some cases spouses and children can accompany you, sometimes with their own work or study options. Conditions apply and change, so confirm the current rules.
How long does processing take?
Times vary by season and volume. IRCC publishes current estimates online; apply early and avoid non-refundable bookings until you have a decision.
Is a job offer alone enough?
Usually you also need supporting documents and, for many permits, an LMIA or exemption. A genuine offer is the foundation, not the whole application.
Can Ghana Travel & Tour arrange my flight?
Yes. Once your permit is approved we can book your flights and help with onward travel.
What I know about Ghanaian travel comes from doing it: filing passport and visa applications, booking flights and hotels, collecting people from arrivals at two in the morning, and driving the Accra, Tema, Cape Coast and Kumasi runs week after week. Where this guide describes how something works, it is because we have done it.
Rules, fees and timetables in Ghana change. I have deliberately not quoted figures that go stale — where a number matters I name the office to confirm it with. If you spot something out of date, tell me and we will fix it.
