The core documents you need

Renting a car in Ghana starts with a small stack of documents. Every reputable company will want to see a valid driving licence and a form of identification — usually a passport for visitors or a national ID card for residents. If you are visiting from abroad, an international driving permit is commonly requested alongside your home licence, so it is wise to arrange one before you travel.

Bring the originals rather than copies, and make sure names match across your documents to avoid delays at collection. If your passport itself needs renewing before a trip, our passport application guide walks you through it. Getting the paperwork right in advance means you can collect the car and be on your way without a hitch — or, if you prefer, skip most of it entirely by choosing a car with a driver.

It also helps to have a means of payment ready in the name that matches your documents, as most companies place the deposit against a card. Residents renting locally will usually find the process quicker, since a national ID and a Ghanaian licence are readily accepted. Visitors should simply allow a little extra time at collection for the checks to be completed properly.

Age, deposits and licence rules

Beyond the documents, companies set their own rules on age and experience. Many require drivers to be at least 21, and some set the bar at 25, particularly for larger vehicles or SUVs. There may also be a requirement that you have held your licence for a minimum period. These conditions vary, so confirm them for your chosen company before you book.

A refundable deposit, or a hold on your card, is standard practice and protects the company against damage or unpaid charges. The amount depends on the vehicle and the firm. Check how and when the deposit is returned, and keep any receipts. If self-drive rules feel restrictive, remember that hiring a car with a driver sidesteps the age and deposit hurdles almost entirely.

Insurance, fuel and the fine print

The details that catch people out are usually in the insurance and the fuel policy. Vehicles come with insurance, but the level of cover and the excess you would pay in a claim differ from company to company. Ask exactly what is covered, what your liability would be, and get it in writing before you drive away. It is far better to understand this at the desk than at the roadside.

Clarify the fuel policy too — whether you return the car full, and how mileage is counted. Why a car with a driver is often simpler

For many travellers, the easiest way to meet all these requirements is not to meet them at all — by booking a car with a professional driver. In that case the licence, the insurance, the deposit and the responsibility for the vehicle sit with us, not with you. You simply enjoy the journey.

A driver also brings local knowledge that no rental agreement can: the best routes, where to park, and how to handle the busier stretches of road. It is often the more relaxing and, for shorter stays, the more practical choice. See how it fits with other options in our guide to getting around Ghana, and if you are landing in Accra, our note on airport pickup shows how a driver can meet you the moment you arrive.

There is a safety dimension too. On unfamiliar roads, at night, or during heavy rain, an experienced local driver reads conditions in a way a visitor cannot, and that alone is worth a great deal. For business travellers it means arriving composed and on time; for families it means everyone can relax and enjoy the view rather than watch the road.

Skip the paperwork. Book a car with a vetted driver and leave the licence, deposit and insurance to us — explore driver options.

Written by Abdul, founder of Ghana Travel & TourI started this agency in Kasoa Opeikuma, Central Region, in 2020. Our drivers meet flights at Kotoka, our homes are the ones we let in Kasoa, and the routes described here are the ones we run ourselves.

What I know about Ghanaian travel comes from doing it: filing passport and visa applications, booking flights and hotels, collecting people from arrivals at two in the morning, and driving the Accra, Tema, Cape Coast and Kumasi runs week after week. Where this guide describes how something works, it is because we have done it.

Rules, fees and timetables in Ghana change. I have deliberately not quoted figures that go stale — where a number matters I name the office to confirm it with. If you spot something out of date, tell me and we will fix it.
