Couples trip to Ghana

A week that mixes a little history, a lot of coastline and plenty of unhurried time together. Here is how we shape a couples' trip to Ghana that feels romantic without being rushed.

The short answer

  • A relaxed week works well: Accra, the Cape Coast area, then the beach coast.
  • Balance shared adventures with genuine downtime, so it feels like a holiday, not a checklist.
  • The coast around Busua and the Ada estuary is ideal for slow, romantic days.
  • A private driver makes a couples' trip far smoother than piecing together transport.
  • The dry season (roughly November to March) is easiest for beaches and sunsets.
  • Confirm current prices, opening times and room availability directly before you book.

How to plan a couples' trip that actually feels romantic

The secret to a great couples' trip is resisting the urge to see everything. As a Kasoa-based team who arrange trips for two most weeks, our advice is to pick a handful of places and give each enough time to breathe. Two or three nights per base beats a string of one-night stops that leave you both exhausted and packing every morning. The best moments on a couples' trip tend to be the slow ones, a long breakfast, an aimless walk, a sunset with nowhere to be, and those only happen when you build in room for them.

A week is plenty for a satisfying loop: a taste of Accra, a meaningful day around Cape Coast, then time to unwind on the coast. If you have longer, our 7-day itinerary can help you extend it thoughtfully without cramming in too much.

Let us build your route. Tell us your style and dates, and we will shape a relaxed couples' plan. Plan my trip and we will do the rest.

Days 1-2: Accra, ease in gently

Start slow. After you land, spend the first day recovering with a good meal and an easy wander rather than a packed schedule. Accra rewards couples with excellent food, breezy rooftops and a lively arts scene. An evening of live highlife or jazz is a lovely, low-key way to begin.

On day two, mix a little culture with a lot of leisure, a gallery, a craft market or the Jamestown lighthouse district in the morning, then a long, unhurried lunch. Evenings are for good food and, if you fancy it, live music somewhere with a bit of atmosphere. Our things to do in Accra and best restaurants guides will help you pick without overloading the day.

Keep it flexible. The point is to reset together, not to tick boxes on day one.

Days 3-4: Cape Coast, history and coastline

Head west to the Cape Coast area for the most moving part of many Ghana trips. The castles at Cape Coast and Elmina tell a hard but essential history, and sharing that experience as a couple can be quietly powerful. Our castles guide explains what to expect and how to visit respectfully.

Balance it the next morning with the treetop canopy walkway at Kakum National Park, a fun, slightly nervy shared adventure high above the rainforest; see our Kakum canopy walk guide. Go early, when it is cooler and quieter and the forest is at its most atmospheric. Confirm current opening times and entry fees before you go, as these change from season to season and are best checked directly.

Days 5-7: the coast, slow days and sunsets

Finish where romance comes easiest: the coast. Busua is our go-to for couples, a laid-back beach town with gentle surf, fresh seafood and nothing more urgent to do than watch the waves. It is the kind of place where two nights quickly becomes three.

If you would rather end near Accra, the Ada estuary offers glorious sunsets over the water, best enjoyed from a small boat.

Our beaches guide and honeymoon guide have more coastal ideas if you want to compare stretches of shore. Whichever you choose, leave your final full day unplanned. Some of the best couple moments happen when there is nowhere you have to be, no schedule to keep and nothing on the agenda but each other and the sea.

Logistics: getting around and honest caveats

Distances in Ghana take longer than the map suggests, and roads vary in quality, so a private driver is the single biggest upgrade for a couples' trip. It means no haggling, no crowded stations and the freedom to stop for a photo, a roadside snack or an unplanned detour whenever the mood takes you. It also means one of you is not stuck navigating unfamiliar roads instead of enjoying the trip. For the wider picture on your options, see our getting around Ghana guide.

Be honest with yourselves about pace and budget, and always reconfirm prices, room availability and opening hours directly, as details change and advertised deals do not always match reality.

Travel in comfort from the start. Begin your trip with a smooth, fixed-price airport pickup. Arrange an airport pickup and start relaxed.

Plan your trip for two

A couples' trip to Ghana can be the perfect blend of meaning and ease: a little history, a lot of coastline and plenty of unhurried time together. As a local team based in Kasoa, we will tailor the route, pace and stays to suit the two of you, honestly, and without over-promising.

Send us your dates and what you are hoping for, and we will craft a realistic plan with a driver who knows the roads. Please reconfirm current costs and details with providers before you commit, as these vary through the year.

Ready when you are. Get a friendly quote for your couples' trip. Plan my trip or message us on WhatsApp, and sort your airport pickup at the same time.

Questions people ask

Is Ghana a good destination for couples?

Yes. It combines coastline, culture and warm hospitality, and it is easy to balance shared adventures with relaxed downtime. The coast around Busua and Ada is especially romantic, while Accra offers great food and nightlife.

How many days do you need for a couples' trip to Ghana?

About a week works well for a relaxed loop of Accra, the Cape Coast area and the beach coast. With more time you can slow down further; with less, focus on Accra and one nearby escape.

What is the best time of year for a couples' trip to Ghana?

The dry season, roughly November to March, is easiest for beaches and sunsets. December is festive but busy and pricier. Check a current forecast and confirm availability close to your dates.

Should we hire a driver for a couples' trip in Ghana?

We think so. A private driver removes the stress of stations and haggling, keeps the pace relaxed and lets you stop whenever you like. It is one of the biggest comfort upgrades for two travellers.

Where are the most romantic places to stay in Ghana?

Busua is a laid-back favourite for beach days, and the Ada estuary is superb for sunsets. Accra suits couples wanting food and nightlife. Confirm room details and prices directly, as these change.

Is it safe for couples to travel around Ghana?

Ghana is generally welcoming and hospitable. As anywhere, take sensible precautions, keep valuables discreet and plan transport ahead. See our Ghana safety guide, and confirm current local advice before you travel.

Written by Abdul, founder of Ghana Travel & TourI started this agency in Kasoa Opeikuma, Central Region, in 2020. Our drivers meet flights at Kotoka, our homes are the ones we let in Kasoa, and the routes described here are the ones we run ourselves.

What I know about Ghanaian travel comes from doing it: filing passport and visa applications, booking flights and hotels, collecting people from arrivals at two in the morning, and driving the Accra, Tema, Cape Coast and Kumasi runs week after week. Where this guide describes how something works, it is because we have done it.

Rules, fees and timetables in Ghana change. I have deliberately not quoted figures that go stale — where a number matters I name the office to confirm it with. If you spot something out of date, tell me and we will fix it.
