The short answer

  • Daily costs in Ghana depend mostly on where you sleep and how you get around.
  • Backpackers can travel well on a modest daily budget by using guesthouses and shared transport.
  • A comfortable mid-range day with a private car and better hotels costs considerably more.
  • Luxury days with top hotels and fine dining are the priciest, but still good value by global standards.
  • Big sights, tours and long transfers are day-specific extras to plan for.
  • All figures are general ranges that move with the exchange rate, so confirm current rates.

What drives your daily cost

How much you spend per day in Ghana comes down to two things above all: where you sleep and how you move. As a team based in Kasoa who arrange these trips every week, we can usually predict a traveller's daily spend from those two choices alone. Food is cheap at every level, so it rarely swings the total much.

Below we set out three realistic daily budgets, backpacker, comfortable and luxury, with the caveat that all figures are general ranges that shift with the exchange rate and the season. Think of them as per-person daily averages across a whole trip rather than a fixed amount every single day, since travel days and big-sight days cost more than a lazy day on the coast. Pair this with our full trip cost breakdown and confirm current rates before you plan around any number.

Backpacker: roughly US$30 to US$55 a day

Travelling lean, Ghana is very doable. Guesthouses and hostels keep beds cheap, chop bars and street food keep meals to a few dollars, and shared tro-tros make transport almost an afterthought. A daily spend of around US$30 to US$55 covers a bed, three good local meals and getting around, with a little left over.

To stretch it further, see our backpacking Ghana on a budget guide. The main squeeze on a budget day is any paid attraction or long-distance transport, so plan those in advance and keep the rest simple. Travelling as a pair or a small group also helps, since rooms and the occasional taxi split neatly and bring the per-person figure down.

Comfortable: roughly US$80 to US$180 a day

Most visitors land here. This buys a comfortable mid-range hotel, a mix of local and restaurant dining, and, crucially, a private car with a driver for part or all of the trip, which removes almost all of the daily friction. Around US$80 to US$180 a day per person is a realistic range, depending on the driver arrangement and hotel standard.

Sharing a car and room brings the per-person figure down noticeably, which is why this tier suits couples and small groups so well. For how transport shapes this tier, see getting around Ghana, and use our cost of living guide to sanity-check daily prices against everyday local costs.

Comfort without the fuss. A private driver is the upgrade that transforms a Ghana trip, plan my trip and we will quote a comfortable daily rate honestly.

Luxury: roughly US$300 to US$600+ a day

At the top end, a day of premium hotels, a dedicated car and driver, guided access to the big sights and fine dining generally runs from about US$300 to US$600 per person, more with the finest suites, charters or imported wine. It is still excellent value against a comparable safari holiday elsewhere in Africa.

The smart luxury day spends on the driver and one or two standout experiences rather than on uniform five-star polish. A private guide to yourself, an unhurried pace and the flexibility to change plans on a whim are the upgrades that people remember most. Sightseeing days and extras

Whatever your tier, big-sight days cost more. A run to the Cape Coast and Elmina castles or the canopy walk adds entry fees, guide charges and a longer transfer on top of your normal daily spend. Budget these as one-off extras rather than folding them into your baseline.

A handful of small costs, water, tips, data, souvenirs, round out the day too. None are large, but they nudge the total, so keep a little slack in each day's budget. It is far more comfortable to finish a trip with a small surplus than to find your last few days squeezed by extras you did not see coming.

Questions people ask

How much money do I need per day in Ghana?

As a rough guide, backpackers manage on around US$30 to US$55 a day, comfortable travellers spend roughly US$80 to US$180, and luxury days run from about US$300 to US$600 per person. Accommodation and transport drive the difference. These are general ranges, so confirm current rates.

Can you travel Ghana on a budget?

Yes. With guesthouses, chop bars and shared tro-tros, a lean daily budget goes a long way. Paid attractions and long-distance transport are the main extras to plan for. See our backpacking Ghana guide for detailed tips.

What is a mid-range daily budget for Ghana?

A comfortable day with a mid-range hotel, mixed dining and a private car and driver typically costs around US$80 to US$180 per person. Sharing a car and room lowers the per-person figure noticeably.

Why is accommodation the biggest daily cost?

Food is cheap at every level in Ghana, so where you sleep and how you travel swing the daily total most. Choosing between a guesthouse, a mid-range hotel or a top property is the single biggest budget decision.

How much extra should I budget for sightseeing days?

Big-sight days add entry fees, guide charges and longer transfers on top of your usual daily spend, so budget them as one-off extras. Confirm current fees at each site, as they change over time.

Do daily prices in Ghana change much?

Yes, prices move with the exchange rate and season, so treat all daily figures as general ranges. Confirm current rates as you plan, or ask us for an up-to-date estimate for your dates.

Written by Abdul, founder of Ghana Travel & TourI started this agency in Kasoa Opeikuma, Central Region, in 2020. Our drivers meet flights at Kotoka, our homes are the ones we let in Kasoa, and the routes described here are the ones we run ourselves.

What I know about Ghanaian travel comes from doing it: filing passport and visa applications, booking flights and hotels, collecting people from arrivals at two in the morning, and driving the Accra, Tema, Cape Coast and Kumasi runs week after week. Where this guide describes how something works, it is because we have done it.

Rules, fees and timetables in Ghana change. I have deliberately not quoted figures that go stale — where a number matters I name the office to confirm it with. If you spot something out of date, tell me and we will fix it.
