Eastern Region day trips
The cool hills, waterfalls and lake country north-east of Accra make some of Ghana's easiest and most rewarding day trips. Here is how to choose and plan them.
The short answer
- The Eastern Region begins less than an hour from Accra and rises into cool, green Akuapem hills.
- Aburi Botanical Gardens is the gentlest half-day escape, easily paired with the ridge road.
- Boti Falls and nearby Umbrella Rock make a longer, more active day out around Huhunya.
- Akosombo and Lake Volta reward a full day, with dam views and boat trips on the water.
- Roads are mostly good but the last stretches to falls and viewpoints can be rough.
- A single hired car and driver ties two or three of these sights into one comfortable day.

Why the Eastern Region works as a day trip
The Eastern Region is the closest thing Accra has to a cool-weather escape. As you climb the Akuapem ridge the air softens, the roadside fills with fruit stalls, and within an hour or so you have swapped city heat for forested hills. That short distance is exactly why it suits a day trip: you can leave after breakfast and be back in the city by evening.
As a team based in Kasoa who arrange these runs most weeks, we usually steer first-time visitors towards one anchor sight plus one lighter stop, rather than trying to cram the whole region into a single day. The roads are good in parts and slow in others, so honest pacing matters more than ticking boxes.

If you want more ideas beyond the east, our Accra day trips guide sets out the wider options, and best time to visit Ghana helps you pick a season with firmer trails.
Aburi Gardens and the Akuapem ridge
Aburi Botanical Gardens is the gentlest introduction to the region. Laid out under old, towering trees, it is a shaded, walkable place for a slow morning, with lawns, a few striking specimen trees and craft stalls near the gate. It rarely feels rushed, which is part of the appeal.
The drive up the ridge is half the pleasure. The road winds through Akuapem villages with long views back over the plains towards Accra, and there are viewpoints and roadside stops worth pausing for. It pairs naturally with a relaxed lunch on the ridge.

For a fuller picture of the gardens and the villages along the ridge, see our dedicated Aburi Gardens and Akuapem ridge guide before you go.
Boti Falls and Umbrella Rock
For something more active, head deeper into the region towards Huhunya. Boti Falls is a twin waterfall reached by a long flight of steps down into a shaded gorge; it is at its fullest in and after the rains and can slow to a trickle in the dry season, so it is worth asking about current flow before committing to the drive.
Nearby, a walk through farm and forest paths brings you to Umbrella Rock, a mushroom-shaped outcrop you can climb onto for a wide view, and the so-called three-headed palm. It is a proper little hike rather than a stroll, so wear real shoes and carry water.
If you enjoy walking, our hiking in Ghana guide covers other trails, and the Ghana packing list notes what to bring for a hot, humid day on foot.
Akosombo and Lake Volta
Further east, Akosombo is where the Volta River was dammed to create Lake Volta, one of the largest man-made lakes in the world. The dam viewpoints are impressive in their own right, and the setting, with hills folding down to the water, is genuinely lovely.
The real draw is getting onto the lake itself. Short cruises and boat trips run from the Akosombo area, and a lazy hour or two on the water is a fine way to end a day. Availability and timings vary, so confirm what is running on the day rather than assuming.

Because Akosombo sits furthest from Accra, we usually treat it as its own full day rather than bolting it onto the falls.
How to plan and get around
You can reach the bigger towns by tro-tro, but linking gardens, falls and viewpoints by public transport eats the whole day and leaves you stranded at odd junctions. A hired car and driver is far more comfortable and lets you combine two sights sensibly. Our getting around Ghana guide explains the trade-offs.
Be honest with yourself about the state of the last few kilometres to falls and viewpoints, which can be rough and dusty. Start early, carry cash for entry and local guides, and confirm current fees and opening times on the day, as these change and we do not want to quote figures that may be out of date.
Coming straight from the airport? An Accra itinerary pairs well with an eastern day once you have found your feet in the city.
Plan your Eastern Region day
The Eastern Region rewards a little planning: pick your anchor sight, add one gentle stop, and leave room for the drive. Get that right and it is one of the easiest good days you can have out of Accra.

Questions people ask
What are the best day trips from Accra to the Eastern Region?
Aburi Botanical Gardens and the Akuapem ridge make the easiest half-day; Boti Falls with Umbrella Rock is a more active full day; and Akosombo with Lake Volta rewards a longer day out. Most visitors pick one anchor sight and one lighter stop rather than attempting all three.
How far is Aburi Gardens from Accra?
Aburi sits up on the Akuapem ridge and is one of the closer escapes, usually well under an hour and a half from central Accra depending on traffic and where you start. The climb up the ridge is scenic in itself.
Is Boti Falls worth visiting?
Yes, especially in and after the rainy season when the twin falls run full. In the dry months the flow can drop to a trickle, so ask locally about current conditions before making the long drive, and pair it with the walk to Umbrella Rock.
Can you take a boat on Lake Volta at Akosombo?
Short cruises and boat trips do run from the Akosombo area, and an hour or two on the water is a highlight. Timings and availability vary, so confirm what is operating on the day rather than assuming a fixed schedule.
Do I need a car for Eastern Region day trips?
You can reach the main towns by tro-tro, but linking gardens, falls and viewpoints without a car wastes hours and can leave you stranded. A private car and driver is far more comfortable and lets you sensibly combine two sights in a day.
When is the best time to do these day trips?
The drier months generally mean firmer trails and easier walking to viewpoints, while the rains make waterfalls fuller but paths slippery. Check current weather close to your dates, as conditions vary year to year.
What I know about Ghanaian travel comes from doing it: filing passport and visa applications, booking flights and hotels, collecting people from arrivals at two in the morning, and driving the Accra, Tema, Cape Coast and Kumasi runs week after week. Where this guide describes how something works, it is because we have done it.
Rules, fees and timetables in Ghana change. I have deliberately not quoted figures that go stale — where a number matters I name the office to confirm it with. If you spot something out of date, tell me and we will fix it.
