First-time Ghana tour: what to know

A first Ghana trip is easier than most people expect — provided you understand how a private tour really works and ask the right questions before you book.

The short answer

  • A private, driver-guided tour is the least stressful way to see Ghana on a first visit.
  • Cost depends on group size, season, hotel standard and distance — ask for a tailored quote rather than a fixed 'from' price.
  • The classic first-timer loop is Accra, Cape Coast, Elmina and Kakum, with Kumasi or Mole added if you have time.
  • Confirm your visa or ETA and yellow fever certificate early — rules change, so check official sources.
  • Airport pickup at Kotoka removes the most stressful part of arriving.
  • Tell us your dates, group size and interests and we will build the trip around you.

How a private Ghana tour actually works

On a first visit, most people picture endless logistics: which bus, which hotel, how to reach Cape Coast, how to avoid getting lost. A private tour removes almost all of that. As a Kasoa-based team who arrange these trips every week, the way it works is simple — you tell us your dates and what you want to see, and we handle the vehicle, the driver-guide, the route and the timing.

Your day runs around a comfortable, air-conditioned car or minibus with a driver-guide who knows the roads, the sites and the sensible order to visit them in. There is no standing at roadside stops or negotiating fares at every turn. You travel door to door, at your own pace, with someone local who can explain what you are seeing.

This is the honest trade-off: a private tour costs more than piecing it together yourself, but it saves a first-timer a great deal of time, stress and guesswork. For most people making a long trip, that is money well spent. See our guide to getting around Ghana if you want to understand the alternatives first. A driver-guide also means you are never left working out which stop is which, or losing half a morning to a wrong turn on an unfamiliar road.

Where first-timers usually go

The classic first-time route is the southern coastal loop. From Accra you head west to Cape Coast and Elmina, where the historic castles are the most moving sites in the country, then on to Kakum National Park for the canopy walkway. It is a rich, varied few days and works well as the backbone of a first trip.

If you have longer, Kumasi in the Ashanti Region adds craft villages, kente weaving and cultural depth, while Mole National Park in the north offers Ghana's best chance of seeing elephants on foot. Our 7-day itinerary and Cape Coast and Elmina guide show how these fit together.

Not sure how long to allow? A week is enough for a satisfying first taste of the south, while ten days or more lets you reach the Ashanti Region or the north without rushing.

What to ask before you book

A good operator will answer plainly. Before you commit, ask what is included — vehicle, fuel, driver-guide, and whether entry fees, meals and accommodation are in the quote or separate. Ask whether the itinerary can be adjusted, what happens if plans change, and how payment and deposits work. Ask, too, how you will stay in contact during the trip and who to call if something needs sorting on the day. Honest, specific answers to these questions tell you far more about an operator than any slogan or headline claim.

We do not publish a fixed 'from' price because it would be misleading. What you pay depends on your group size, the season, the standard of hotel you prefer and how far you travel. A couple sharing a car pays differently from a family in a minibus, and a coastal loop costs less to run than a route that reaches the north. The fair way to handle it is a tailored quote, so you see exactly what your trip involves. Our trip cost breakdown explains the moving parts.

Practicalities to sort early

Two things are worth confirming well before you fly: entry requirements and health documents. Ghana's visa and ETA arrangements can change, so check official sources or our visa and ETA guide for the current position rather than relying on old advice. A yellow fever certificate is a standard requirement — see our note on that and speak to a travel clinic about malaria prevention.

Beyond documents, pack light, breathable clothing and sensible shoes for the canopy walk. Our packing list and first-timer tips cover the rest. For arrival itself, a booked pickup at Kotoka is the single easiest way to start well.

Questions people ask

How do I actually book a tour with you?

Send us your travel dates, group size and the places you want to see, ideally by WhatsApp or email. We reply with a tailored itinerary and quote. When you are happy with it, a deposit confirms the dates and we finalise the details.

What is included in a private tour?

Typically the air-conditioned vehicle, fuel and an experienced driver-guide. Entry fees, meals and accommodation can be included or left separate depending on what suits you — we spell out exactly what your quote covers so there are no surprises.

Can the itinerary be customised?

Yes. Everything is built around you. Tell us your interests, pace and must-sees and we shape the route accordingly, whether that is coastal history, wildlife, culture or a relaxed mix.

How much does a first-time Ghana tour cost?

It depends on group size, season, the standard of hotel you prefer and how far you travel, so we do not quote a fixed price. Send your details and we will give you an honest, tailored quote.

Do I need to pay a deposit?

Yes, a deposit secures your dates and lets us make bookings on your behalf. We will confirm the current amount and terms in your quote.

Is it safe and reliable to travel this way?

Ghana is one of the more welcoming and settled countries in the region, and travelling with a local driver-guide adds a layer of reassurance. Use common-sense precautions, confirm current travel and health advice from official sources, and see our safety guide for detail.

Written by Abdul, founder of Ghana Travel & TourI started this agency in Kasoa Opeikuma, Central Region, in 2020. Our drivers meet flights at Kotoka, our homes are the ones we let in Kasoa, and the routes described here are the ones we run ourselves.

What I know about Ghanaian travel comes from doing it: filing passport and visa applications, booking flights and hotels, collecting people from arrivals at two in the morning, and driving the Accra, Tema, Cape Coast and Kumasi runs week after week. Where this guide describes how something works, it is because we have done it.

Rules, fees and timetables in Ghana change. I have deliberately not quoted figures that go stale — where a number matters I name the office to confirm it with. If you spot something out of date, tell me and we will fix it.
