Why honeymoon in Ghana

Most honeymoon lists send couples to the same handful of resorts, where you share the beach with a thousand other newlyweds. Ghana offers something more personal: long beaches you often have to yourselves, boutique lodges hidden among the palms, and a welcome that feels genuine rather than staged. You get the barefoot romance of a tropical escape with the texture of real culture, and with English spoken throughout, everything is refreshingly easy to arrange.

It is also a wonderful choice for adventurous couples who want stories to tell alongside their tan, and the sense of discovering somewhere still relatively unknown adds a romance all of its own. For inspiration on the wider region see our guide to Africa for couples, and for the polished end of the market, luxury Ghana travel shows what is possible when you want to spoil yourselves a little. The route below is a template to shape around your own tastes, whether you crave pure beach or a richer mix of culture.

Days 1 to 2: Arrive in style in Accra

Ease into married life with a couple of nights in the capital. Check into a stylish hotel, sleep off the flight, and spend an evening at a rooftop bar watching the city lights come on across the skyline. A leisurely day of galleries, good coffee and a seafood dinner is the perfect gentle start before you head for the coast and the quiet begins.

Accra's dining and nightlife have real energy if you want a taste of it before disappearing to the beach. Browse our where to stay in Accra guide to pick the right romantic base for your first nights together.

Arrive without a hitch. Begin the honeymoon relaxed with a private, air-conditioned airport cars transfer waiting the moment you land.

Days 3 to 4: Sunsets on the Volta estuary at Ada

Drive east to Ada Foah, where the Volta River meets the Atlantic in a shifting maze of sandbars and lagoons. This is one of the most romantic corners of Ghana, and few international visitors ever find it. Stay in a river-facing eco-lodge, take a boat out to a private sandbank for a picnic, and toast the sunset with the water glowing pink and gold all around you.

Days here are deliberately slow: swimming, paddling, fresh fish grilled over coals and long lie-ins with absolutely nowhere to be. Kayaks and paddleboards are usually on hand if you want to explore the channels together, and the birdlife along the reeds is wonderful at dawn. It is the ideal decompression before the western beaches, and a first taste of Ghana's quieter, wilder charm that so many couples fall for.

Days 5 to 8: Barefoot days in the Western Region

Now for the heart of the honeymoon. The Western Region holds Ghana's dreamiest coastline, and Busua is the pick of it: a graceful curve of golden sand, gentle surf, and small lodges where the loudest sound is the sea against the shore. Spend your days swimming, walking to the fishing village for fresh lobster, and doing gloriously little between meals.

If you fancy a little adventure between beach days, a canoe trip to the stilt village of Nzulezo makes a memorable half-day out; our Western Region, Nzulezo and Busua guide has all the details. Otherwise, simply enjoy the rare luxury of having a beach almost to yourselves.

Days 9 to 10: A little culture before home

Weave in some substance on the way back so the honeymoon has depth as well as sunshine. The castles at Cape Coast and Elmina add moving historical context, or you can loop up to Kumasi for the Ashanti heartland and the vivid, clattering world of kente weaving. Choose whichever suits your energy after the beach; either makes a rich contrast to the sand and salt.

Our kente and textiles guide is a lovely primer if you would like to bring home a handwoven souvenir with real meaning behind its colours, chosen together as a keepsake of the trip. Keep this final stretch flexible and light so the honeymoon never once feels rushed, and leave a spare afternoon simply to wander, shop for gifts and enjoy your last hours before the flight home.

Questions people ask

Is Ghana a good honeymoon destination?

Yes, especially for couples who want beaches and culture without the crowds of mainstream resorts. You will find boutique lodges, uncrowded golden sands and genuinely warm hospitality. It suits couples looking for something a little different and far more personal.

When is the best time for a Ghana honeymoon?

The dry season from November to early April offers the most reliable beach weather and easiest travel. December is festive and lively, while the quieter months feel more secluded and intimate. We can advise on the best window for your priorities as a couple.

Where are the most romantic places in Ghana?

Ada Foah's estuary sunsets and the palm-fringed beaches of the Western Region, particularly Busua, top most lists. Boutique lodges along both stretches are made for couples. A private sandbank picnic at Ada is a highlight for many honeymooners.

How long should a Ghana honeymoon be?

Around nine to twelve days lets you combine Accra, the Ada estuary, the western beaches and a touch of culture without rushing. Shorter trips work well if you focus purely on the coast. We can shape the route to the time you have.

Can you arrange a luxury honeymoon in Ghana?

Yes. While Ghana is not a big five-star market, there are stylish boutique lodges, private tours and thoughtful touches that make a honeymoon feel special. Our luxury Ghana travel guide shows what is possible at the higher end of the market.

Do we need a driver for a honeymoon in Ghana?

A private driver is the most relaxing way to travel as a couple. It removes stress, keeps you on your own schedule and lets you enjoy the scenery together rather than navigating. We include this in most tailored honeymoon plans.

Written by Abdul, founder of Ghana Travel & TourI started this agency in Kasoa Opeikuma, Central Region, in 2020. Our drivers meet flights at Kotoka, our homes are the ones we let in Kasoa, and the routes described here are the ones we run ourselves.

What I know about Ghanaian travel comes from doing it: filing passport and visa applications, booking flights and hotels, collecting people from arrivals at two in the morning, and driving the Accra, Tema, Cape Coast and Kumasi runs week after week. Where this guide describes how something works, it is because we have done it.

Rules, fees and timetables in Ghana change. I have deliberately not quoted figures that go stale — where a number matters I name the office to confirm it with. If you spot something out of date, tell me and we will fix it.
