Ghana in May

May is the green season down south: wetter and more humid, but quieter, cheaper and beautifully lush. Here is where it stays drier and how we plan around the rain.

May weather: the green season down south

May sits squarely in the main rainy season for southern Ghana, and it is usually the wettest stretch of the year around Accra, Cape Coast and the forest belt as things build towards June. That sounds worse than it is. The rain tends to arrive in heavy, defined bursts, often overnight or in the afternoon, rather than grey all-day drizzle, so there are still plenty of dry, usable hours in a typical day.

Temperatures ease a little, into the mid-twenties to low thirties Celsius, but humidity is high, so it feels close. The important nuance is geography: the north is drier than the south through much of May, before its own single rainy season takes hold. That means a well-planned trip can chase the drier weather. Our weather guide lays out the north-south difference clearly.

Why the green season is worth it

May has real advantages if you travel with the right mindset. The countryside is lush and photogenic, the forest around Kakum is alive, and waterfalls such as Wli in the Volta Region and Kintampo run at full force. Crowds thin out, so the Cape Coast and Elmina castles and the canopy walk feel far more personal than in high season.

Value is the other draw. Demand is lower, so hotels are easier to book and flights can be cheaper, and popular guides and vehicles are simpler to secure at short notice. As we always say, what drives the cost of a trip is group size, the standard of hotel, distance and the season, and May sits at the friendlier end of that scale. Our notes on the best time to visit weigh this honestly against the weather.

What to do in May

The month suits anyone who likes green, active days. This is a strong time for hiking: the Volta Region trails around Wli and the Amedzofe area, and the climb up Mount Afadja, Ghana's highest peak, are cooler and dramatic now, though paths can be muddy and slippery, so decent boots earn their place. Our hiking guide covers the routes and what to expect underfoot.

The coast still works between showers; Busua and Ada have quiet, low-season charm, and the castles are best done in the clearer mornings. For a drier bet, head north to Mole and Kumasi, where May is less wet than the south and the wildlife is still gathering at water before its own rains take hold. The Mole guide and the Kumasi guide set out both. Birdlife is superb this month, with migrants and resident species active in the green forest, so it is a genuinely good time for anyone who travels with a pair of binoculars.

Travelling well in May

Plan for the wet and it barely registers. Bring a light waterproof, quick-dry clothes and a dry bag for electronics, and treat the daily plan as flexible; we simply reorder the day when a storm rolls through. Forest and rural roads can be muddy or briefly flooded, so a maintained vehicle and a driver who knows the surface make a real difference this month.

Mosquitoes are more active in the rains, and malaria is present in Ghana all year, so talk to your doctor about antimalarials and bring good repellent. That is general guidance rather than medical advice, so check current health information before you fly. Our packing list covers the wet-season kit that actually helps.

How we plan a May trip

As a Kasoa-based team who run these routes every week, we build May itineraries to work with the rain, not against it. We get outdoor highlights done in the clearer mornings, lean on the drier north where it suits the plan, and travel in an air-conditioned car with a driver-guide who can rearrange the day around a storm without any fuss.

Make the most of the green season. Tell us your dates and group size and we will plan a route that dodges the worst of the rain, via Plan my trip.

May is also a good-value month, and we are happy to build a trip that reflects that. Share what you have in mind and we will put together an honest, itemised quote.

A dry, easy arrival. Land and go straight to your hotel with a private airport pickup at Kotoka, rain or shine.

Ready to travel in May?

May rewards travellers who want Ghana green, quiet and better value, and who are relaxed about the odd heavy shower. With a flexible plan and a good vehicle, the rains are a small price for having the castles, the canopy walk and the waterfalls largely to yourself.

Get a tailored May quote. Send your dates, nights and group size and we will price it clearly through Plan my trip.

Message us on WhatsApp or through the site and a real person in Ghana will help you shape it, whether that is a green-season hiking trip in the Volta Region or a drier loop up to the north.

Questions people ask

Is May a good time to visit Ghana?

It depends on what you want. May is in the south's main rainy season, so expect regular showers, but they usually come in bursts with dry hours around them. In return you get lush landscapes, full waterfalls, fewer crowds and better value. The north is drier this month, so a well-planned trip can still find plenty of clear weather.

How wet is May in Ghana?

May is one of the wettest months in the south around Accra and the coast, building towards June. Rain typically falls in heavy, defined bursts, often overnight or in the afternoon, rather than as constant drizzle, so most days still have usable dry spells. The northern regions are noticeably drier for much of the month.

Is May cheaper for a Ghana trip?

Often, yes. May is low season for tourism, so hotels are easier to book and flights can be cheaper than in the busy dry months. We do not quote fixed prices, since cost depends on group size, the standard of hotel, distance and the season, but May generally sits at the friendlier end of that scale. Ask us for a tailored quote.

What is there to do in the rainy season?

Plenty. The green season is excellent for hiking in the Volta Region, for waterfalls like Wli at full flow, and for quieter visits to the Cape Coast castles and the Kakum canopy walk. Heading north to Mole and Kumasi finds drier weather. We simply schedule outdoor highlights for the clearer mornings.

How do I book a May trip with you?

Send your travel dates, number of nights and group size through the Plan my trip page or on WhatsApp. We reply with a suggested itinerary and a clear, itemised quote that reflects the good-value season. A deposit then secures your dates, and we arrange the vehicle, driver-guide, hotels and excursions.

Is it safe and reliable to travel in the rains?

Yes. Ghana is one of West Africa's more stable and welcoming countries, and we run trips right through the rainy season with maintained, air-conditioned vehicles and experienced driver-guides. Muddy or briefly flooded roads are the main practical concern, which a local driver manages routinely, reordering the day when a storm passes through.

Written by Abdul, founder of Ghana Travel & TourI started this agency in Kasoa Opeikuma, Central Region, in 2020. Our drivers meet flights at Kotoka, our homes are the ones we let in Kasoa, and the routes described here are the ones we run ourselves.

What I know about Ghanaian travel comes from doing it: filing passport and visa applications, booking flights and hotels, collecting people from arrivals at two in the morning, and driving the Accra, Tema, Cape Coast and Kumasi runs week after week. Where this guide describes how something works, it is because we have done it.

Rules, fees and timetables in Ghana change. I have deliberately not quoted figures that go stale — where a number matters I name the office to confirm it with. If you spot something out of date, tell me and we will fix it.
