Ghana in November
November is the first clean stretch of dry weather after the rains, with the December crowds still a few weeks off. For many travellers it is the best value in the calendar.
The short answer
- November opens the southern dry season, so days are warm, bright and reliably rain-free.
- The Harmattan haze usually creeps in from the north late in the month.
- It sits just before the December diaspora peak, so it is calmer and better value.
- The coast is at its best, and Mole in the north is fully into its dry-season game viewing.
- Pack for heat and sun, plus lip balm and eye drops for the dry Harmattan air.
- We run private tours throughout November and can build in the coast, north and Ashanti.

November weather: the dry season begins
November is the month the south dries out for good. The minor rains of September and October have passed, the humidity eases off, and you get long runs of bright, warm days with little or no rain. Accra and the coast sit around 27 to 33 degrees, hot in the sun but comfortable in the shade and pleasant once the sea breeze picks up in the afternoon. Inland Kumasi feels a touch fresher, and the higher ground around Aburi is cooler again after dark.
The one thing to watch is the Harmattan. This dry, dusty wind blows down off the Sahara and usually reaches the north first, then drifts south, often arriving over Accra in the last week or two of November. It brings cooler nights, lower humidity and a hazy sky that softens the light. Our month-by-month weather guide and the best time to visit page set November against the rest of the year.
In short, this is proper travelling weather, and the rain is no longer part of the planning.
Why so many people rate November
November is the sweet spot that regulars quietly keep to themselves. You get the dependable weather of the dry season without the December frenzy, when the diaspora arrives, flights fill and Accra hotels sell out for the festive weeks. Come in November and the castles at Cape Coast and Elmina are calm, the beaches are uncrowded, and the city has space to breathe.
It is also excellent for combining regions. The south is dry, the roads are firm, and the north is well into its own dry season, so a single trip can take in the coast, Kumasi and a Mole safari without weather getting in the way. The Mole guide explains why the dry months are the best for game viewing, as animals gather at the shrinking waterholes.
The coast and the city at their best
Dry-season November is when Ghana's beaches shine. Labadi in the city gets lively at weekends with music and horse rides on the sand, while the quieter shores past Takoradi and the western stretch around Busua reward anyone willing to drive a little further. The beaches guide lays out the options honestly, from busy to barefoot.

Accra itself is at its most enjoyable now. The things to do in Accra guide covers the markets, the Jamestown lighthouse and the Nkrumah memorial, and the dry evenings are made for eating outside and being out after dark, with the city's live music and bars beginning to build toward the busy December season without the festive squeeze. It is the kind of month where an evening on a rooftop bar comes with a cool breeze rather than a downpour.
Living with the Harmattan
The Harmattan is worth understanding rather than fearing. When it settles in, usually toward the end of November, mornings and nights turn noticeably cooler and the air dries out. The upside is real relief from humidity and comfortable sleeping. The downside is a dusty haze that can dull long-distance views and, on hazier days at the tail of the season, occasionally affect flight schedules, so keep some slack around tight connections.
Practically, the dry air chaps lips and dries eyes, so lip balm, a light moisturiser and eye drops earn their place in the bag. Our packing list covers the rest. If you are sensitive to dust, a light scarf helps on the road up north.
The north and a wider loop
November is prime time for the north. Mole is dry, the bush has thinned, and elephants, antelope and warthog concentrate near the waterholes below the escarpment, so a walking safari or a game drive both deliver. It is a long haul from the coast, so we break the drive rather than rush it, usually with a night in Kumasi to see the Ashanti heartland.
As a Kasoa-based team who arrange these trips every week, we build November loops that use the good weather across the whole country, coast to savannah. The Kumasi guide helps you decide what to fold in around Manhyia Palace, the Kejetia market and the kente weavers at Bonwire. If your dates run close to December, book early, as availability tightens quickly as the month ends.

Questions people ask
Is November a good time to visit Ghana?
It is one of the best. November opens the southern dry season, so you get warm, bright, rain-free days, and it falls just before the December diaspora peak, so sites are calmer and value is better. The Harmattan haze usually only builds late in the month. For reliable weather without the festive crowds, it is a strong choice.
What is the Harmattan and will it affect my trip?
The Harmattan is a dry, dusty wind that blows south from the Sahara, usually reaching Accra in the last week or two of November. It brings cooler, less humid air, which most people welcome, but also a haze that can dull long views and, later in the season, occasionally affect flights. Pack lip balm and eye drops, and keep a little slack around tight connections.
Is November a good month for a Mole safari?
Yes. The north is well into its dry season in November, the bush has thinned and animals gather at the waterholes, which makes game viewing more reliable. It is a long drive from the coast, so we usually break it with a night in Kumasi. See our Mole safari guide for how a visit is arranged and what to expect.
How do I book a November tour?
Send your travel dates, group size and the places you would like to see through the Plan my trip page or on WhatsApp. We reply with a suggested itinerary and an itemised quote covering your private vehicle, driver-guide and stays. A deposit then secures your dates, and we handle everything from your pickup at Kotoka onwards.
Should I book November early because of December?
Yes, especially for the last week or two of the month. As December approaches, the diaspora season ramps up and both flights and Accra hotels tighten quickly. Booking a few months ahead gives you the pick of stays and better availability. We are happy to advise on how close your dates sit to the peak when we quote.
Can a November trip combine the coast and the north?
Comfortably. November is dry across most of the country, so a single trip can take in the coastal castles, Kumasi and a Mole safari without weather getting in the way. We plan the driving in manageable legs and break the long northern run rather than push it in a day. We tailor the loop to your dates, pace and budget.
What I know about Ghanaian travel comes from doing it: filing passport and visa applications, booking flights and hotels, collecting people from arrivals at two in the morning, and driving the Accra, Tema, Cape Coast and Kumasi runs week after week. Where this guide describes how something works, it is because we have done it.
Rules, fees and timetables in Ghana change. I have deliberately not quoted figures that go stale — where a number matters I name the office to confirm it with. If you spot something out of date, tell me and we will fix it.

The best time to visit Ghana
Ghana's year is organised by rain rather than temperature, so choosing dates is mostly a question of which season suits the trip you have in mind.
Ghana weather, month by month
Ghana is warm all year, but the rains, the harmattan and the humidity shift the mood from month to month. Here is exactly what to expect, so you can choose your dates with confidence.
Ghana's beaches
Ghana has more than five hundred kilometres of Atlantic coast, but only some of it is safe to swim in, and the difference matters more than the scenery.
