The short answer

  • There is no direct Berlin to Accra flight, so you connect through Frankfurt, Amsterdam, Brussels or Istanbul.
  • Expect a single stop and roughly a half-day of travel door to door.
  • Ghana runs on GMT year-round, so there is effectively no jet lag from Germany.
  • The dry months, about November to March, are the easiest time to tour.
  • We meet you at Kotoka and handle transport, guides and the whole route.
  • Cost depends on group size, season and hotel standard; send dates for a tailored quote.

Getting from Berlin to Accra

There is no direct flight from Berlin to Accra, so every sensible routing runs through one hub. The cleanest connections go via Frankfurt, Amsterdam, Brussels or Istanbul: a short first leg out of Berlin Brandenburg (BER), then a single change onto the roughly six-and-a-half-hour flight down to Kotoka International Airport (ACC). Add the layover and you are looking at about half a day of travel, most of it comfortable. Lufthansa, KLM, Brussels Airlines and Turkish Airlines all serve this market in one form or another, but timetables and fares shift with the season, so check current flights and connection times before you book anything.

One quiet advantage from Germany: Ghana keeps GMT all year, so there is no meaningful jet lag. You land at roughly the clock hour you would at home and can start moving the next morning. Sort your visa or ETA and your yellow fever certificate well ahead; both get checked on arrival.

What a Ghana trip actually looks like

Most first visits pair Accra with the coast west of the capital. A common shape is the classic seven-day route: a day or two in Accra, down to Cape Coast and Elmina for the castles, the canopy walk at Kakum, then back through the city. The drive from Accra to Cape Coast is around three hours on the N1 coastal road, which is why we build in flexible timing rather than a rigid schedule.

The Cape Coast and Elmina castles are the emotional centre of the trip for most people, especially diaspora travellers. If you have longer, we run inland to Kumasi and the Ashanti heartland, or stretch the whole thing into a fuller two-week loop.

Accra itself rewards an unhurried day or two. We usually take in Jamestown, the old quarter down by the lighthouse where the fishing fleet crowds the shore, the sprawl and noise of Makola Market, and Independence Square with its arch. Keep an evening free for grilled tilapia with banku, or a plate of jollof rice, at a chop bar or a spot in Osu. There is plenty more to fill the gaps of a city day.

How we handle the ground

As a Kasoa-based team who arrange these trips every week, we take care of everything from the moment you clear immigration. A driver-guide meets you in the arrivals hall at Kotoka with a name board, helps with the bags, and drives you in an air-conditioned car or minibus depending on group size. No haggling with taxis at midnight, no working out the roads yourself.

Our vehicles are maintained for long coastal runs, the drivers know the routes and the sites, and we keep the pace realistic so you are not eating breakfast at 5am every day. If you would rather only book the transfer and explore on your own, we do that too. Getting around independently is very doable in Ghana, and we are happy to be honest about the trade-offs of the tro-tro and shared-taxi routes.

When to come, and what drives the cost

The dry season, roughly November to March, is the most comfortable window for touring, with easier roads and less humidity. July and August bring a quieter, greener spell. We run trips year-round, so it comes down to your calendar as much as the weather.

One thing worth knowing: the Harmattan, the dry, dusty wind off the Sahara, usually blows in around December and January and can put a soft haze over the light. It rarely spoils a trip, but it is the kind of local detail we factor in when we suggest dates.

On price, we do not publish fixed package rates because a real quote depends on the specifics: how many of you are travelling, how far you range, whether you want mid-range or higher-standard hotels, and the season. A couple sharing a car costs very differently from a family of six, and park fees at Kakum or the castles sit on top. For a sense of the wider picture, our trip cost breakdown lays out what money actually goes on. Send us your rough dates and group size and we will come back with a clear, itemised quote — no surprises later.

Questions people ask

How do I book a Ghana tour from Berlin?

Send us your travel dates and group size on WhatsApp or through our Plan my trip page. We reply with routing suggestions and an itemised quote. Once you are happy, we confirm the plan and take care of vehicles, guides and your airport pickup.

Is there a direct flight from Berlin to Accra?

No. You connect once through a hub such as Frankfurt, Amsterdam, Brussels or Istanbul, with the Africa leg running about six and a half hours. Overall it is roughly a half-day of travel. Always confirm current flights and connection times before booking, as schedules change by season.

What is included in a private tour?

Typically your airport pickup, an air-conditioned vehicle with a driver-guide, and a planned route with entry logistics at the sites. Hotels, meals and park fees can be bundled in or left to you. We spell out exactly what is and is not included in your written quote so there is nothing hidden.

Can the itinerary be customised?

Yes, entirely. We do not sell fixed packages off a shelf. Tell us how long you have, what you most want to see and your pace, and we build the route around that, whether it is a focused Cape Coast trip or a two-week loop through Kumasi and the north.

Do I need to pay a deposit?

Arrangements usually involve a deposit to confirm your dates and vehicles, with the balance settled nearer travel. We will explain the exact terms in writing before you commit anything, and we never use pressure tactics to rush a booking.

Is it safe and reliable to travel in Ghana?

Ghana is one of the most stable and welcoming countries in West Africa, and travelling with a local operator adds a layer of reassurance. Our team lives in Kasoa and runs these trips weekly. For a fuller picture, read our Ghana safety guide before you travel.

Written by Abdul, founder of Ghana Travel & TourI started this agency in Kasoa Opeikuma, Central Region, in 2020. Our drivers meet flights at Kotoka, our homes are the ones we let in Kasoa, and the routes described here are the ones we run ourselves.

What I know about Ghanaian travel comes from doing it: filing passport and visa applications, booking flights and hotels, collecting people from arrivals at two in the morning, and driving the Accra, Tema, Cape Coast and Kumasi runs week after week. Where this guide describes how something works, it is because we have done it.

Rules, fees and timetables in Ghana change. I have deliberately not quoted figures that go stale — where a number matters I name the office to confirm it with. If you spot something out of date, tell me and we will fix it.
