Ghana tours from Birmingham

For Midlands families this is a homecoming as much as a holiday. Here is how to plan the flights, sort the paperwork, and get everything on the ground handled once you land.

The short answer

 • Birmingham connects to Accra one-stop through London, Amsterdam, Istanbul or a Gulf hub — no direct flight, but frequent options.
 • Ghana runs on GMT, so there is no jet lag from the Midlands whichever routing you take.
 • December is the big homecoming window for Birmingham's Ghanaian community; flights and hotels go early.
 • We are a Kasoa-based team who run these trips weekly, with air-conditioned vehicles and driver-guides.
 • A private tour costs more than going it alone, but it takes the logistics, haggling and wrong turns out of the trip.
 • Send your dates and group size on WhatsApp and we will build a quote around your actual plans.

Getting to Ghana from Birmingham

Birmingham International has no direct flight to Accra, so the trip runs through one connection — usually London, Amsterdam, Istanbul or one of the Gulf hubs. In practice the Midlands community has flown these routings for years, and the single stop is a minor inconvenience rather than a real obstacle. Total travel time depends on the layover, but most options put you into Kotoka International Airport within a day of leaving home.

Which routing you pick comes down to fare and layover on the day. A quick London connection keeps the total short; Gulf and Istanbul routings can cost less but add hours. Check current schedules and carriers yourself before booking, since these connections shift with the season and none is permanently the best deal.

Sort the paperwork before anything else. Even if Ghana is home, entry rules change: read our visa and ETA guide, confirm the current position on the official channels, and check your yellow fever certificate is valid well ahead of departure.

If part of the group holds a Ghanaian passport and part holds a British one, plan the documents together — it saves confusion at check-in and on arrival.

Homecomings, family and heritage

Plenty of our Birmingham travellers are not coming as tourists — they are coming home. That shapes a trip differently. Some want a base near family in Accra or Kumasi with a driver on call for day runs; others fold a proper tour around a wedding, a funeral or a christening. Both work, and both are easier with someone local handling the vehicle and the routes while you focus on the people you came to see. A car on call also spares older relatives the strain of trotros and shared taxis in the heat.

For those tracing roots, the coast carries real weight. The castles at Cape Coast and Elmina are a sober, essential stop, and our heritage travel guide covers the wider return-journey experience honestly. We keep the pace respectful and give you space at the sites that matter.

When to go, and December

The drier months from November to March make touring easiest — better roads to the coast and the north, and less humidity. Our timing guide sets out the seasons month by month.

December is the homecoming peak for the Midlands community, and it shows. Accra fills, the events calendar overflows, and connecting flights and hotels book out weeks in advance. Go then for the atmosphere, but plan early. If you would rather have the castles and Kakum quiet, January and February are calmer and cheaper.

How we handle the ground

As a Kasoa-based team who arrange these trips every week, we start where journeys usually get stressful. A driver-guide meets you inside Kotoka's arrivals with your name on a board, takes the bags, and drives you to your hotel or family home in an air-conditioned car — no taxi queue late at night, no fare to argue over after a long day. You can book an airport car on its own, or as the first leg of a full tour.

For touring we run saloon cars for couples, 4x4s where the roads need them, and Hiace minibuses for families and groups. The driver-guide knows the timings, the best places to break for food, and how to read the traffic out of Accra so you are not stuck crawling along the Kasoa road at rush hour. Beyond the coast, Kumasi offers Ashanti history and kente, a four-hour run up from the capital, and the Kakum canopy walk pairs naturally with the castles for a two- or three-day coastal loop.

What it costs and how to book

We will not quote a headline figure, because a fair price depends on your trip. What moves it: your group size, whether you travel in December or a quieter month, the hotel standard, how far you range, and whether the vehicle is yours alone. A couple after comfort and a large family sharing a minibus will see very different numbers. Our cost breakdown shows where the money goes, and a private tour buys back time and certainty rather than being the cheapest way to travel.

To plan it, send us your dates, your group size and what you want the trip to be. We reply with a tailored itinerary and a clear quote — no fixed package. WhatsApp is quickest, and you speak directly to the people running the trip.

Questions people ask

How do I book a Ghana tour from Birmingham?

Send us your dates, group size and what you want to do. We reply with a tailored itinerary and a quote, refine it with you, and confirm when you are happy. WhatsApp is fastest, and you deal directly with our Kasoa-based team.

Can you work around a family visit rather than a full tour?

Yes. Many Birmingham travellers want a base near family with a driver on call for day trips, and a shorter tour built around it. Tell us how the trip splits and we plan for both.

What is included?

Usually your vehicle, fuel and a driver-guide, plus anything else we agree such as hotels, entries and airport pickup. The quote states exactly what is covered. Connecting flights from Birmingham you book yourself, and we can advise on routing.

Can the itinerary be customised?

Completely. A private tour is built around your interests, pace and budget, not a set package. Heritage stops, family time, quieter routes — we plan it your way.

Is a deposit required?

For most bookings we take a deposit to hold your dates and vehicle, with the balance later. We put the terms in writing before you commit and keep them clear and fair.

Is it safe and reliable?

Ghana is among the calmer countries in the region, and we run these roads weekly with drivers who know them. We stay reachable throughout. Our safety guide gives the practical detail.

Written by Abdul, founder of Ghana Travel & TourI started this agency in Kasoa Opeikuma, Central Region, in 2020. Our drivers meet flights at Kotoka, our homes are the ones we let in Kasoa, and the routes described here are the ones we run ourselves.

What I know about Ghanaian travel comes from doing it: filing passport and visa applications, booking flights and hotels, collecting people from arrivals at two in the morning, and driving the Accra, Tema, Cape Coast and Kumasi runs week after week. Where this guide describes how something works, it is because we have done it.

Rules, fees and timetables in Ghana change. I have deliberately not quoted figures that go stale — where a number matters I name the office to confirm it with. If you spot something out of date, tell me and we will fix it.
