The short answer

  • The Carolinas' African community is growing quickly, and Charlotte sits at the centre of it.
  • There is no nonstop from Charlotte, but as a major airline hub it connects easily through Atlanta, the North East or Europe.
  • Allow the better part of a day door to door, with one transatlantic leg of roughly ten to eleven hours.
  • We meet you at Kotoka and run the whole trip privately in an air-conditioned vehicle with a driver-guide.

  • Send your dates and group size and we build a private route and an honest quote to match.

Why Charlotte is heading to Ghana

The Carolinas have quietly become one of the fastest-growing homes for West Africans in the country, and Charlotte is where much of that energy sits, out through University City and along the Central Avenue corridor. Ghanaian churches, associations and shops have followed, and with them a steady flow of people flying home for funerals, weddings and outdoorings, or simply to spend time with family.

For a younger, growing community, a lot of these are first or second trips, and the question is always the same: who looks after us on the ground? As a Kasoa-based team who arrange these trips every week, that is our job. If Ghana will be your first journey to the continent, our guide on Ghana for the diaspora is a good place to begin before you plan the details.

Flights and routing from Charlotte

There is no nonstop between Charlotte Douglas and Accra, but Charlotte's strength is that it is a major airline hub, so onward connections are plentiful. Most travellers route through Atlanta or a North East hub such as New York or Washington-Dulles, or across the Atlantic through a European hub like London, Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Brussels or Istanbul. Each is a one-stop journey; the European routings usually put the long leg overnight.

Expect one transatlantic sector of roughly ten to eleven hours plus your connection, so plan the better part of a day door to door. A number of airlines serve Accra through these hubs and schedules move with the season, so confirm current flights and fares yourself before booking. Send us your arrival details and we will meet you at Kotoka.

How the trip runs on the ground

Landing at Kotoka after a day of travel, you want a familiar face rather than a scramble for a cab. We meet you in the arrivals hall with your name, carry the bags and drive you straight to your hotel in Accra, Kasoa or on the coast. From there the trip is fully private: an air-conditioned car or minibus and a driver-guide who knows the roads and the sensible way to time each site.

You never share the vehicle with strangers, and the days bend to your pace and your plans. Ghana rewards local knowledge over a hire car and a map, and our transport guide explains why most visitors are glad to leave the driving to us.

Arrive without stress. Let a friendly driver meet you at Kotoka. Book airport pickup for a calm start after the flight.

Where Charlotte guests usually go

The coast west of Accra shapes most first trips. Cape Coast and Elmina castles are the emotional heart of a roots journey; walking through the dungeons and standing at the Door of No Return moves people in a way that lingers long after they fly home. Our castles guide sets out what to expect, in feeling and in logistics.

Close by, the Kakum canopy walk hangs high through the rainforest for those with a head for heights. Add Accra's markets and monuments, and Kumasi for Ashanti heritage if your days allow. A week covers the essentials at an easy pace, as our 7-day itinerary shows; two weeks lets you reach the north or slow right down.

What affects the cost, and how to book

We do not advertise one flat price, because an honest quote has to follow your real choices. Group size, the season, the standard of hotel and the distance the route covers are what move the total. A private trip costs more than doing everything yourself, but it removes the daily friction of finding drivers, agreeing fares and worrying about timings, which is exactly what you want when leave from work is short.

Booking is straightforward. Send your dates and the number of travellers, and we reply with a suggested route and an itemised, honest quote. We adjust it together until it suits you, and nothing is fixed until you agree. Sort out your visa or ETA early, since the rules change now and again.

Questions people ask

How do I book a Ghana tour from Charlotte?

Send us your travel dates and the number of people travelling, through our Plan my trip page or on WhatsApp. We reply with a suggested private route and an itemised quote, then adjust it with you until it fits. Nothing is confirmed until you are happy with both the plan and the price.

What is included in a private Ghana tour?

You get a private air-conditioned vehicle with a driver-guide, a planned route and the logistics of moving smoothly between sites. We can also arrange your Kotoka airport pickup and suggest hotels to match your budget. Your quote states clearly what is and is not included, so there are no surprises.

Can the itinerary be customised?

Yes. Every trip is built around your priorities, whether that is Cape Coast and Elmina, visiting family, Ashanti heritage in Kumasi or an easy pace after the flight. We shape the route, timing and each day to your group rather than fitting you into a fixed tour.

Do you cater for families and groups?

We do. We arrange trips for solo travellers, couples and family groups travelling together from Charlotte and across the Carolinas. Group size is a major factor in the cost per person, so tell us the numbers and we will match the right vehicle and quote accordingly.

Is a deposit required to hold dates?

Any deposit is agreed only after you approve the route and quote, and we explain it clearly before anything is confirmed. There are no hidden terms and no pressure. You will know exactly what is needed to secure your dates before you commit.

Is travelling in Ghana safe and reliable?

Ghana is one of the most stable and welcoming countries in West Africa, and a private driver-guide keeps the trickier parts of getting around off your plate. As a Kasoa-based team we run these routes every week and stay contactable throughout. Our Ghana safety guide gives honest, practical detail.

Written by Abdul, founder of Ghana Travel & TourI started this agency in Kasoa Opeikuma, Central Region, in 2020. Our drivers meet flights at Kotoka, our homes are the ones we let in Kasoa, and the routes described here are the ones we run ourselves.

What I know about Ghanaian travel comes from doing it: filing passport and visa applications, booking flights and hotels, collecting people from arrivals at two in the morning, and driving the Accra, Tema, Cape Coast and Kumasi runs week after week. Where this guide describes how something works, it is because we have done it.

Rules, fees and timetables in Ghana change. I have deliberately not quoted figures that go stale — where a number matters I name the office to confirm it with. If you spot something out of date, tell me and we will fix it.
