Ghana tours from Delhi

There is no nonstop from Delhi to Accra, but one clean connection puts you in Ghana in a single travel day. Here is how to route it, when to go, and how we take the ground side off your hands.

The short answer

  • Delhi reaches Accra one-stop through a Gulf hub such as Dubai, Abu Dhabi or Doha, or through Addis Ababa or Nairobi on African carriers.
  • Reckon on roughly 15 to 20 hours door to door depending on the hub and the layover, so treat the arrival day as a rest day.
  • Ghana runs on GMT, five and a half hours behind Delhi, which makes the jet lag mild and easy to shake off.
  • We are a Kasoa-based team who arrange these trips every week, with air-conditioned cars, 4x4s and Hiace minibuses and driver-guides.
  • Vegetarian and Jain travellers eat well here once you know where to look, and we plan meals around your needs.
  • Send your dates and group size on WhatsApp and we will build a tailored quote around your actual trip.

Getting to Accra from Delhi

No airline flies Delhi to Accra without a stop, and you should ignore any listing that suggests otherwise. The sensible route is one clean connection. The Gulf carriers are the workhorses here: Indira Gandhi International feeds Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Doha several times a day, and each of those hubs runs onward service to Kotoka International in Accra. The African option is just as good and often faster on paper, connecting through Addis Ababa on Ethiopian or through Nairobi, both of which have long-standing links into West Africa.

What matters is the total journey and the layover, not the badge on the tail. A tight one-stop can have you in Accra in around 15 hours; a longer connection can stretch it towards 20. Book the itinerary with the shortest sensible layover you can find, and give yourself a little buffer if you are checking bags through.

Fares and schedules on these routes shift with the season, so confirm the current flights yourself before you commit. Treat the airline websites and a good agent as your source of truth, and once your dates are set, tell us your landing time so we can have a driver waiting.

The time shift and your first day

Here is the good news for anyone dreading jet lag: it is gentle on this route. Ghana keeps GMT year-round, which puts it five and a half hours behind Indian Standard Time. Flying west across a modest gap, most Delhi travellers feel more tired from the length of the journey than from any clock confusion. That is very different from flying to the Americas or the Far East.

Even so, the connecting day is long, and we plan the first 24 hours to be easy. A driver-guide meets you inside arrivals at Kotoka with your name on a board, handles the luggage, and drives you to your hotel in an air-conditioned car. No queuing for a taxi at midnight, no negotiating a fare while you are half asleep.

Keep day one light. A shower, a proper meal and a full night's sleep, and you will wake up on Ghana time. We deliberately avoid scheduling the long drive to Cape Coast on arrival day; give yourself one settled night in Accra first and the whole trip flows better. If your flight lands in the small hours, we still time the pickup to your real arrival, not the timetable.

Landing late after a long connection? We time the pickup to your actual arrival and keep day one restful. Arrange your airport car and skip the taxi line.

Visas, ETA and health paperwork

Sort the entry paperwork early, because it is the one thing that can derail an otherwise smooth trip. Indian passport holders need the correct authorisation before flying, and Ghana has been moving its system around in recent years. Read our visa and ETA guide for how the process works in practice, then confirm the current rules on the official Ghana Immigration channels close to your travel date, since these things change.

The yellow fever certificate is not optional. Ghana asks for proof of vaccination on arrival, and travellers from India are routinely checked. Get it done well ahead, keep the yellow card with your passport, and read our yellow fever certificate guide so there are no surprises at the desk.

Malaria is present in Ghana, so speak to a doctor or a travel clinic in Delhi about antimalarials and routine jabs before you go. We are a tour operator, not a medical service, so take proper advice rather than ours on health. Pack a small kit, bring any regular medicines in their original packaging, and carry copies of your key documents separately from the originals.

What to do in and around Accra

Most Delhi trips begin with a few days in Accra, and the city rewards them. Independence Square and the arch, the Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum, and the old fishing quarter of Jamestown with its lighthouse give you the history and the everyday life side by side. Makola Market is loud, dense and genuinely useful for a first feel of how the city trades, and Osu is where the evening comes alive.

Food is a highlight, and Indian travellers are better catered for here than you might expect. Accra has a solid handful of Indian restaurants, and Ghanaian cooking has plenty for vegetarians once you know the dishes: red-red (a bean stew), kelewele (spiced fried plantain), waakye and groundnut soup. Our food guide and our Accra restaurants guide point you to the good places, and we happily plan meals around Jain, vegetarian or halal needs.

Beyond the centre, the Aburi hills above the city are a cool half-day escape, and the coast is close. We shape the Accra days around your pace rather than marching you through a checklist, and the driver-guide knows which markets and sites are worth the heat of the afternoon and which are better early.

The coast: castles, canopy and beaches

The stretch west of Accra is the heart of most first visits. Cape Coast and Elmina hold the old slave-trade castles, and a guided walk through the dungeons and the Door of No Return is a heavy, necessary experience that deserves unhurried time. Our castles guide explains what to expect, and we keep the pace respectful rather than rushing you to the next stop.

An hour inland from the coast, Kakum National Park has the famous rope-and-plank canopy walkway strung high through the rainforest. Go early, before the heat and the crowds, and read our Kakum guide for the practical detail. It pairs naturally with the castles into a two or three day loop from Accra.

Push a little further west and the beaches open up. Busua is the easy-going surf town, and the stilt village of Nzulezo sits out on a lagoon nearby, reachable by canoe. Our western region guide covers this quieter end of the coast, which most first-timers skip and later wish they had not.

Going further: Kumasi and the north

With ten days or more, the trip opens up beyond the coast. Kumasi, the Ashanti capital, is where Ghana's living royal culture is strongest. The Manhyia Palace, the Kejetia market and the surrounding craft villages of kente weaving, brass casting and adinkra stamping give you a completely different side of the country from Accra. Our Kumasi and Ashanti guide lays out the highlights.

If you have two weeks, the north is worth the drive. Mole National Park is Ghana's best safari, where you can walk or drive close to elephants, antelope and warthog, and the mud-and-stick mosque at Larabanga sits nearby. Our Mole safari guide and our 14-day itinerary show how it all strings together.

The distances are real, and Ghana's roads reward a driver who knows them. Rather than chase everything, we would rather build a route that fits your days honestly. For a first visit our seven-day itinerary is the sensible floor; from Delhi, with the long connection each way, most travellers get more out of ten to fourteen days on the ground.

How the trip comes together on the ground

As a Kasoa-based team who run these routes every week, we take the logistics off your hands entirely. You are not renting a car and puzzling over junctions, and you are not standing at the roadside haggling for a shared taxi in the sun. We provide the vehicle, the fuel and a driver-guide who knows the roads, the timings and the good stops in between.

The fleet matches the group. Couples travel in an air-conditioned saloon car; families and friends spread out in a Toyota Hiace minibus; and where the road turns rough, we bring a 4x4. Our transport guide is honest about why a private driver beats going it alone here, especially on your first visit and especially in the heat.

The driver-guide is the quiet engine of the whole thing. They read the traffic out of Accra, know which fuel stops are clean, and can translate a little Twi when it helps. If your group wants to change the plan mid-trip, add a beach day or a longer lunch, that is easy when the car and the guide are yours alone.

When to travel and festivals worth timing

Ghana has two broad seasons, and the timing genuinely affects the trip. The main dry season runs from roughly November to March, with clear skies and firm roads; this is the easiest window and it includes December, the busiest travel month by far. The rains come in the middle of the year, heaviest around June, when the coast is greener and quieter but some dirt roads get tricky. Our best time to visit guide breaks it down month by month.

If you can align your dates with a festival, do. The Ashanti Akwasidae at Manhyia Palace, the Hogbetsotso of the Anlo-Ewe, and the Homowo harvest festival around Accra are the real thing, not staged for tourists. December in Accra is a season of its own, with the diaspora home and the city humming.

Delhi travellers often ask about tying a trip to Diwali or a school break. Both work; we simply plan around the weather of that month and book earlier if it falls in a peak. Tell us the window you are eyeing and we will tell you honestly what the roads and the crowds will be like then.

Money, connectivity and keeping comfortable

A few practical habits make Ghana easy. The currency is the cedi, and while cards work in the bigger hotels and some restaurants, cash still runs day-to-day life, so carry some and change money at a bank or a licensed forex bureau rather than on the street. Mobile money is used everywhere and is worth setting up if you are staying a while. ATMs are common in Accra and the larger towns but scarcer once you head into the countryside, so draw what you need before a long drive.

Pick up a local SIM at the airport or in town for cheap data. MTN and the other networks have solid coverage across the south, and it makes staying in touch with home in Delhi, and with us, far simpler. WhatsApp is how most of Ghana communicates, ourselves included.

Dress for heat and humidity: light cotton, a hat, strong sun protection and a refillable water bottle. Stick to bottled or properly filtered water, which we keep stocked in the vehicle. Bring modest clothing for the castles and any village or palace visit, where covered shoulders and knees are the respectful norm. Evenings on the coast can carry a breeze, so pack one light layer. None of this is complicated once you are here, and the driver-guide will steer you on the small things — where to buy water, which stall is fair, and when to set off early to beat the worst of the heat.

What it costs and how to book

We will not print a headline price, because an honest one depends on your trip. The factors that move it are plain: your group size, whether you travel in December or a quieter month, the hotel standard you want, how far you range, and whether the vehicle is yours alone or shared. Our cost breakdown shows exactly what your money covers. A private tour is not the cheapest way to see Ghana, but it buys back your time, your comfort and your peace of mind.

Booking is simple and personal. Send us your dates, your group size and a sense of what you want the trip to be, and we reply with a tailored itinerary and a clear quote — no fixed package to squeeze into. We usually take a deposit to hold your dates and vehicle, with the balance later, and we put the terms in writing first.

Get your tailored quote. Message your dates and numbers on WhatsApp and we will build the trip around you — Plan my trip or arrange your airport pickup first.

WhatsApp is the quickest way to reach us across the time difference with Delhi, and you deal directly with the people running your trip rather than a call centre. Read our safety guide for the practical picture, then send us a message and we will start planning.

Questions people ask

How do I book a Ghana tour from Delhi?

Send us your dates, group size and what you would like to do, and we reply with a tailored itinerary and a clear quote. We adjust it with you until it fits, then confirm when you are ready. WhatsApp works well across the five-and-a-half-hour time difference, and you deal directly with our Kasoa-based team rather than an agent.

What is included in the tour?

Typically your vehicle, fuel and a driver-guide, plus anything else we agree such as hotels, site entries and airport pickup. The quote spells out exactly what is covered so there are no surprises. Your international flights from Delhi you book yourself, and we are happy to advise on sensible routing and timing.

Can the itinerary be customised for our interests?

Completely. A private tour is built around your pace, your interests and your budget rather than a set package. We regularly plan around vegetarian, Jain or halal meals, a family occasion, or a slower route with more rest days. Tell us what matters most and we shape the days around it.

Do you handle families and larger groups?

Yes, from couples in a saloon car to families and larger groups in a Toyota Hiace minibus. Group size is one of the main drivers of the per-person cost, so give us your numbers up front and we can quote accurately. We can also run more than one vehicle for a big party.

Is a deposit required to secure the trip?

For most trips we take a deposit to hold your dates and vehicle, with the balance settled later. We put the terms in writing before you commit and keep them clear and reasonable. Because Delhi routes involve long connecting flights, we recommend confirming your booking once your flights are ticketed.

Is Ghana safe and reliable for Indian travellers?

Ghana is one of the steadier, more welcoming countries in the region, and we run these routes every week with drivers who know the roads. We stay reachable throughout your trip and adjust plans if anything changes. Read our safety guide for the practical detail, and take a doctor's advice on health and malaria before you fly.

Written by Abdul, founder of Ghana Travel & TourI started this agency in Kasoa Opeikuma, Central Region, in 2020. Our drivers meet flights at Kotoka, our homes are the ones we let in Kasoa, and the routes described here are the ones we run ourselves.

What I know about Ghanaian travel comes from doing it: filing passport and visa applications, booking flights and hotels, collecting people from arrivals at two in the morning, and driving the Accra, Tema, Cape Coast and Kumasi runs week after week. Where this guide describes how something works, it is because we have done it.

Rules, fees and timetables in Ghana change. I have deliberately not quoted figures that go stale — where a number matters I name the office to confirm it with. If you spot something out of date, tell me and we will fix it.
