Lome to Accra: two easy ways in

Of all the places to begin a Ghana trip, Lome is about as convenient as it gets. Togo shares a border with Ghana, and Accra is genuinely close, so this is a short hop rather than an expedition. You have two sensible options.

The first is to fly. It is a brief regional flight into Kotoka, over almost before the seatbelt sign goes off. The second, and often the more interesting, is to come overland. The Aflao border crossing sits on the coast where the two capitals nearly meet, and from there it is a manageable few hours by road into Accra. We will not print flight schedules or fares here, because they shift; confirm current services before you commit.

As a Kasoa-based team who arrange these trips every week, we handle plenty of guests arriving from Togo, so both routes are familiar ground for us. Our notes on getting around Ghana cover the road side in more detail.

Coming overland? Tell us your crossing time at Aflao and we will meet you at the border. Plan my trip.

Short trip, same paperwork

A quick hop from a neighbour does not exempt you from the entry rules. By air or by road, you still need to check whether you require a visa or the electronic travel authorisation for Ghana, and to carry a valid yellow fever certificate, which is demanded at the border and the airport alike.

We explain the visa and ETA rules and the yellow fever certificate in plain language, but rules for land crossings can differ from air arrivals, so confirm the current position with the official source before you set off. Have your documents ready and the Aflao crossing is usually straightforward; we can guide you on what to expect.

We meet you at the airport or the border

However you come, your first Ghana hour should be easy. If you fly, our driver waits inside arrivals at Kotoka with your name on a board, takes your bags and walks you to an air-conditioned car. If you cross at Aflao, we can meet you on the Ghana side once you clear immigration and drive you straight on, so you are not left bargaining with roadside taxis after a border queue.

Either way, you skip the part of travel that wears people down. For a short trip especially, every hour saved on logistics is an hour spent actually seeing Ghana.

Pickup, your way. Airport or land border, we collect you and go. See airport cars or WhatsApp us your details.

What to see on a short break

Because Lome is so close, you can do a lot in a little time. A long weekend is enough for Accra and a run along the coast; a full week lets you go further at a gentle pace. In Accra itself, wander Jamestown, browse Makola market, pay respects at the Nkrumah memorial and eat well, whether that is jollof, banku or a bowl of waakye from a roadside seller. If you have an extra day, the Aburi Botanical Gardens up on the Akuapem ridge make an easy, cool-air escape from the city heat.

Push west and the Cape Coast and Elmina castles come into range, telling the sober history of the slave trade with real weight. Close by, Kakum National Park strings a canopy walkway high through the rainforest.

Our Cape Coast and Elmina guide, Kakum canopy walk guide and 7-day itinerary help you shape it. We drive these coastal routes constantly and can tell you honestly what fits your days.

What it costs, and how to book

We do not quote a headline price, because a real one depends on your specifics: group size, hotel standard, how far you travel, the season and whether the tour is fully private. A short private trip for two and a group sharing a minibus produce very different per-head figures. Our Ghana trip cost breakdown shows what actually shapes it.

A private guided trip costs more than winging it alone, and on a short break the value is clearer than ever: with only a few days, you cannot afford to lose one to confusion. Send us your dates, numbers and how you plan to arrive, and we will come back with a costed plan, no obligation.

Ghana is right next door

From Lome, Ghana is almost a day trip's distance and easily a weekend's. Fly the short hop or cross overland at Aflao, and let a local team take care of the rest so your time goes on the country, not the queues.

Read a little first if you wish, starting with why visit Ghana. When you know your dates, send them with your group size for a tailored quote, and tell us whether to meet you at Kotoka or the border. We will confirm the plan, the vehicle and the pickup point before you set off, so there are no loose ends on the day.

Questions people ask

How do I book a Ghana tour from Lome?

Send your dates, group size and how you plan to arrive, by flight or overland, through the enquiry form or on WhatsApp. We reply with a costed plan you can adjust before confirming, and we arrange your pickup at Kotoka or the Aflao border.

Should I fly or come overland from Lome?

Both work well. Flying is a very short regional hop into Accra; the overland route via Aflao takes a few hours and lets you see the coast. We do not quote schedules or fares, so confirm current flights before choosing, and we can meet you either way.

What is included in a private tour?

A private air-conditioned vehicle, a local driver-guide, fuel and a planned route with your chosen stops. Hotels, entry fees and meals can be bundled in or kept flexible. Your quote lists exactly what is covered.

Can I do this as a short trip?

Yes. Because Lome is so close, a long weekend covers Accra and the Cape Coast comfortably, and a full week lets you go further. We tailor the pace to the days you have.

Do you take families and small groups?

We do, from solo travellers and couples to families and friend groups, with the vehicle matched to your numbers. Sharing a minibus as a group brings the per-person cost down.

Is a deposit needed, and are you reliable?

A deposit usually secures your dates, with the balance due nearer travel; the exact terms are in your quote. We are a Kasoa-based team running these trips every week, we handle plenty of guests arriving from Togo, and you keep a direct line to us throughout.

Written by Abdul, founder of Ghana Travel & TourI started this agency in Kasoa Opeikuma, Central Region, in 2020. Our drivers meet flights at Kotoka, our homes are the ones we let in Kasoa, and the routes described here are the ones we run ourselves.

What I know about Ghanaian travel comes from doing it: filing passport and visa applications, booking flights and hotels, collecting people from arrivals at two in the morning, and driving the Accra, Tema, Cape Coast and Kumasi runs week after week. Where this guide describes how something works, it is because we have done it.

Rules, fees and timetables in Ghana change. I have deliberately not quoted figures that go stale — where a number matters I name the office to confirm it with. If you spot something out of date, tell me and we will fix it.
