Ghana tours from Madrid
From Madrid, West Africa is closer than most Spaniards assume: one connection and roughly half a day of travel. Here is how we turn that into a smooth, well-run Ghana trip.
The short answer
- Madrid to Accra is a one-stop journey via a European hub or Casablanca, taking roughly half a day door to door.
- The time-zone gap is small, so jet lag barely registers and you can start exploring almost straight away.
- A week covers Accra, the coastal castles and Kumasi comfortably; ten days lets you add the north or the Volta.
- We meet you at Kotoka and run the whole trip privately with air-conditioned vehicles and local driver-guides.
- Cost depends on group size, season, hotel standard and distance, never a fixed off-the-shelf price.
- Send us your dates and group size on WhatsApp for a private itinerary and a clear quote.

Why Ghana makes sense from Madrid
Spain and Ghana are closer than the map suggests once you factor in the flight options. There is a real and growing Ghanaian community across Spain, in Madrid, Barcelona and the industrial towns of Catalonia and the Basque Country, and every year more of them bring Spanish partners, friends and children to see where the family is from. Alongside them we get Spanish travellers who have done East and Southern Africa and want something different, less trodden, and genuinely warm.
The appeal is that Ghana is friendly, English-speaking and easy to move around with the right operator, which removes the language barrier that puts some Spanish travellers off West Africa. As a Kasoa-based team who arrange these trips every week, we handle the parts that would otherwise be daunting from Madrid, the airport arrival, the driving, the hotels, so you arrive to a plan rather than a puzzle. Whether the reason is roots, curiosity or a honeymoon somewhere unexpected, Ghana repays the trip, and it does so within a week if that is all you have.
Flying from Madrid: routing and timing
There is no direct Madrid to Accra flight at present, so you connect once, and the connections are good. The common patterns are through a major European hub such as Paris, Brussels, Amsterdam, Frankfurt or Istanbul, or south across the Strait via Casablanca, which is often the quickest routing on the map. All of these put you into Kotoka International Airport in Accra on a single onward leg.
Counting the layover, plan for roughly half a day of travel from the moment you leave Barajas to the moment you land in Accra. That is very manageable, and crucially the time difference is small, only an hour or two depending on the season, so you step off the plane without the wall of jet lag that a trip to Asia or the Americas brings. Many Madrid flights arrive in the evening, which suits us because we can settle you into your hotel and start fresh the next morning. We deliberately do not list flight numbers, schedules or fares here because they change all the time; confirm current routings when you book, and we will match your ground arrangements to whatever you choose.
One practical note on the connection: give yourself a sensible layover rather than the tightest one a booking engine offers, especially if your bags are checked all the way through, because a missed onward leg to Accra can mean a long wait for the next departure. We are happy to sanity-check a routing you are considering before you commit, drawing on how these journeys actually run rather than how they look on a website. And whatever time you eventually land at Kotoka, your pickup is arranged to meet that specific flight, so a delay earlier in the day changes nothing on our side.
What a private tour with us involves
Everything we run for Madrid travellers is private. That means your group, your vehicle and a driver-guide who is with you for the trip, not a fixed coach tour where you keep to someone else's clock. You decide when to start, how long to linger and where to eat, and we make it happen.
A normal day begins with a hotel pickup after breakfast, unhurried, in an air-conditioned vehicle with cold water on board. Your guide explains what you are seeing and answers the questions that come up, in clear English, and steers you to lunch spots that are good rather than touristy. We plan the driving sensibly around Ghana's traffic and heat, so you are not stuck on the road at the worst times. If you want a food-led trip, we build in the dishes worth trying, and our Ghanaian food guide is a useful primer before you come. The point of going private is control and comfort, and after a flight from Madrid that is exactly what you want.
A sample week from Accra to Kumasi
For a first Ghana trip from Madrid, this seven-day shape works well and can be stretched to ten. It is a template, and we tailor it to you.
- Days 1 to 2, Accra. Ease in with Jamestown, the Independence Square, Makola Market and a first taste of jollof and grilled tilapia.
- Day 3, to Cape Coast. Drive west along the coast, stopping where it is worth stopping rather than rushing.
- Day 4, Cape Coast and Elmina. The castles, with time to absorb them, and the Elmina fishing harbour alongside.
- Day 5, Kakum. The canopy walkway at opening time.
- Days 6 to 7, Kumasi. The Ashanti capital, Manhyia Palace, the vast Kejetia Market and kente weaving.
With ten days we add Mole National Park for elephants, or the Volta region for waterfalls and lake scenery. If you want the day-by-day timings spelled out, our 7-day Ghana itinerary is the natural companion to this route.
When to go from Spain
Ghana's dry season, roughly November to March, is the most straightforward time to travel, with clear skies, lower humidity and firm roads. It coincides with the busy, joyful December in Accra, full of homecomings and events, and with the Spanish Christmas and New Year break, so it is popular; book early if you want those dates. The harmattan haze can arrive from the north in December and January, softening the light and the heat.
The wetter months, April to October, are greener and quieter, with warm rains that usually come in short bursts. Prices ease and the country looks lush, and the Spanish summer holidays in July and August sit inside this window and work perfectly well; we simply plan drives around the afternoon showers. Semana Santa in spring is another good slot that avoids the peak crowds. For the full picture, read our guide to the best time to visit Ghana, and tell us your preferred window early so we can lock in the right hotels for you.
The coast and its castles
The stretch of coast west of Accra holds the sites that stay with people longest. Cape Coast Castle and Elmina Castle were central to the transatlantic slave trade, and walking through their dungeons and out through the Door of No Return is a sobering, important experience, not a light morning of sightseeing. We treat it as such, giving you time and quiet rather than rushing you between rooms.

Elmina, built by the Portuguese, is the oldest European structure of its kind in sub-Saharan Africa, and it sits right beside a living fishing harbour where hundreds of painted boats crowd the water. That contrast, the weight of history against the noise of everyday Ghanaian life, is part of what makes the day so affecting. We time the visits for the cooler morning and let a knowledgeable guide walk you through it properly. Our Cape Coast and Elmina castles guide sets out what to expect before you arrive, and we suggest reading it so the experience is not your first encounter with the history.
Kakum and the rainforest
Inland from Cape Coast, Kakum National Park preserves a slice of Ghana's tropical rainforest, and its canopy walkway is the headline. Seven suspension bridges are strung between the tallest trees, and you cross them high above the forest floor as the morning mist lifts. It is a genuine thrill and a welcome shift in tone after the heaviness of the castles.

We aim to arrive for opening, before the heat builds and before the coaches roll in from Accra, which gives you the walkway in relative peace and the best chance of hearing the forest come alive. If heights are a worry, the bridges are solidly built and the guides set an easy pace, and there is a shorter ground-level trail for anyone who would rather skip the high walk. Our Kakum canopy walk guide gives the straight facts on what it is like and how to prepare. Combined with the coast, it turns two intense days into a balanced, memorable pair.
Getting ready in Madrid
A little preparation makes the trip smooth. Most visitors need travel authorisation or a visa for Ghana, and the rules change, so check the current position early; our overview of the Ghana visa and travel authorisation explains the general shape, but always confirm the official requirement for a Spanish passport. A yellow fever certificate is required for entry, so arrange the vaccination at a travel clinic in good time, and speak to your doctor about malaria tablets since the whole country is a malaria area.
On money, daily life runs on Ghana cedis and mobile money; cards work in the bigger hotels but little else, so plan to change euros on arrival. Pack light, breathable clothes, sturdy shoes for Kakum and modest options for churches and family visits, and bring good insect repellent. We are always glad to talk any of this through with you before you commit to dates, so you leave Madrid confident about what to expect.
Kumasi and the Ashanti heartland
Kumasi is Ghana's second city and the seat of the Ashanti kingdom, and it feels quite different from coastal Accra, prouder, older, more tied to tradition. Manhyia Palace tells the story of the Asante kings and their long resistance to British rule, and the museum there is genuinely absorbing. Kejetia Market, among the largest in West Africa, is a sprawl of thousands of stalls where you can lose an afternoon among cloth, beads, kitchenware and food.
The real draw for many is the craft villages just outside the city. At Bonwire, weavers work kente cloth on narrow looms, each pattern carrying a name and a meaning, and you can watch the strips grow and buy directly from the maker. At nearby Ntonso, adinkra symbols are stamped onto cloth using dye from tree bark. These are living traditions, not performances staged for tourists, and time with the artisans tends to be a highlight of any Ashanti visit. Our Kumasi and Ashanti guide goes deeper into what to see and how to spend your time there.
Beyond the classic route
With more than a week, Ghana opens up well beyond the Accra-to-Kumasi corridor. In the far north, Mole National Park is the country's finest wildlife experience, where elephants come to the waterhole below the park lodge and you can join a walking or driving safari with a ranger. It sits a long drive or a short domestic flight from the south, and we plan the logistics either way.
Closer to Accra, the Volta region rewards a couple of days with green hills, the tallest waterfall in West Africa at Wli, and the calm expanse of Lake Volta at Akosombo, where an evening boat trip is time well spent. The estuary town of Ada, where the Volta meets the sea, is a relaxed spot to end a trip. None of this is on the standard first-timer route, which is exactly why it appeals to travellers who want more than the headline sights. Tell us how much time you have and what draws you, and we will fit the right extension into your plan. Our Mole National Park safari guide covers the north in detail.
Plan your Ghana trip from Madrid
A single connection, a small time difference and a country that is warm in every sense, Ghana is one of the easier long-haul trips you can make from Spain, and we take the effort out of the parts that would otherwise slow you down. Tell us who is travelling and roughly when, and we will turn it into a real, private plan.
We do not publish a fixed price because no two trips match; what you pay depends on your group size, the season, the standard of hotel you choose and how far you travel. We will always explain what drives the figure and offer options rather than pressure you. When you are ready, reach out on WhatsApp with your dates and group size, and our Kasoa-based team will handle everything from the first message to your send-off at Kotoka.
Questions people ask
How do I book a Ghana tour from Madrid?
Send us your dates, the number of travellers and what you would like to see, either through our enquiry form or on WhatsApp. We reply with a suggested private itinerary and a clear quote, and we refine it with you until it fits. Once you approve, we confirm the arrangements and hold your hotels and vehicle. You are under no obligation from the first conversation, and we are happy to answer questions in Spanish-friendly plain English before you decide.
What does the tour include?
A private tour normally includes your air-conditioned vehicle, a local driver-guide, fuel and the day-by-day plan, and we can add hotels, entry fees for parks and castles, and airport transfers so everything sits with one operator. International flights are not included, and we always state clearly what is and is not covered before any payment. You can add or drop elements freely. It all goes in writing so there are no surprises when you arrive.
Can I customise the itinerary?
Yes. The sample routes here are starting points, not fixed packages, and most Madrid trips are tailored. If you want more time on the coast, a food-focused angle, a honeymoon pace or an extension to Mole or the Volta, we build it around your priorities. Tell us what matters most and any constraints on time or mobility, and we will shape the days to suit you.
Is the language a problem in Ghana?
No. Ghana's official language is English, so signage, guides and daily interactions are straightforward, which is one reason Spanish travellers find it easier than they expect. Our driver-guides speak clear English and are used to visitors for whom English is a second language, so they explain things patiently. You will pick up a few words of Twi along the way, which locals appreciate. If anyone in your group is uneasy about language, we are glad to reassure you before you travel.
Do you require a deposit?
Generally yes, a deposit secures your dates and lets us hold hotels and vehicles, with the balance due nearer to travel. The exact amount and timing depend on the trip and the hotels involved, and we set it out clearly in writing before you pay anything. We do not add hidden charges. If your plans are not final, we can hold a provisional itinerary while you decide.
Is Ghana safe and reliable to travel in?
Ghana is among the more stable and welcoming countries in West Africa, and travelling with a local operator smooths out almost everything a first-timer would otherwise struggle with. Our vehicles are maintained, our driver-guides know the roads and the sensible stops, and we stay reachable throughout your trip. You take the normal sensible precautions with valuables and health, and we brief you on them. Do check the current Spanish government travel advice, and we will happily discuss any concern beforehand.
What I know about Ghanaian travel comes from doing it: filing passport and visa applications, booking flights and hotels, collecting people from arrivals at two in the morning, and driving the Accra, Tema, Cape Coast and Kumasi runs week after week. Where this guide describes how something works, it is because we have done it.
Rules, fees and timetables in Ghana change. I have deliberately not quoted figures that go stale — where a number matters I name the office to confirm it with. If you spot something out of date, tell me and we will fix it.
