Ghana tours from Minneapolis

The Twin Cities hold one of the largest African communities in the American Midwest, and Ghana is a regular destination. Here is how the trip works from Minneapolis and what we take care of once you arrive.

The short answer

  • Minneapolis connects to Accra with one stop, most often through Amsterdam or a US East Coast hub.
  • There is no nonstop, so the layover you choose shapes your travel day more than the airline does.
  • You land at Kotoka International Airport in Accra, where your driver-guide meets you.
  • A week is the sensible minimum from the Upper Midwest; two weeks earns its keep.
  • Price depends on group size, season, hotel standard and distance — we quote, we do not sell fixed packages.
  • Message us your dates and numbers and we build the itinerary from Kasoa around them.

Minnesota's African community and Ghana

The Twin Cities punch well above their weight for African community life. Alongside the large Somali and Liberian populations, there is a steady Ghanaian and wider West African presence across Minneapolis and St Paul — churches, associations, students at the University of Minnesota, and families who have built two homes across two continents. Ghana comes up again and again as a destination, whether for a first visit, a wedding, a funeral, or simply taking the kids to meet their grandparents.

We handle trips for Twin Cities travellers regularly, and the brief is usually the same: make the ground part effortless. After the connections it takes to get here, nobody wants to arrive and start negotiating taxis. If part of your trip is about roots and history, our guide on Ghana for African Americans sets the scene well.

Flights from Minneapolis to Accra

There is no nonstop from MSP to Accra, so you connect once. The cleanest routing for many Minnesotans is Amsterdam with KLM, which pairs neatly with the Delta network out of Minneapolis and lands you in Accra on a single European stop. The alternative is a domestic hop to a US East Coast hub — New York, Atlanta or Washington — and across from there. Several carriers serve Accra, and both fares and timetables change often, so confirm current flights with the airline before you count on anything.

Expect a long day. Door to door usually runs around eighteen to twenty-two hours depending on the layover, and Accra arrivals are frequently in the evening. That suits us; we plan pickups around late landings as a matter of routine. Before you fly, get your paperwork sorted — entry rules have tightened, so read our current note on the Ghana visa and ETA and verify the official position close to departure.

What we take care of on the ground

As a Kasoa-based team who arrange these trips every week, the moment you clear immigration at Kotoka is where we come in. Your driver-guide is in the arrivals hall with a name board, and from there the trip runs on a plan we have agreed with you beforehand — no scrambling for a ride at eleven at night.

Every vehicle is air-conditioned: a saloon car for a couple, a Toyota Hiace minibus for a family or group. Your driver knows the roads north to Kumasi and west along the coast, handles the checkpoints, and can point you to a proper bowl of red red or grilled tilapia when hunger strikes. If you would rather book transport separately, our getting around Ghana guide lays out the choices, and a standalone airport car is easy to arrange.

Evening arrival from Amsterdam? Send us your flight and a driver will be waiting at Kotoka. Arrange an airport pickup or message us on WhatsApp.

Shaping the trip

With a journey this long, we steer people away from short trips. Seven days covers Accra, the drive to Cape Coast and Elmina for the castles, and Kakum's rope-and-plank canopy walk high in the rainforest. Add a second week and Kumasi, Mole's elephants and the western beaches all come into reach. Our 7-day Ghana itinerary is a solid frame, and the Kakum canopy walk guide tells you what that morning actually involves.

The plan bends to you. We have run Twin Cities families who spent most of the trip in a hometown near Kumasi with only light touring, and couples who wanted the full coastal-and-Ashanti loop. You set the priorities; we handle the driving, the timing and the hotels. For choosing your window, the best time to visit guide runs through the seasons.

How we price it, honestly

We do not publish a headline price, because a real quote depends on your trip. A private guided tour costs more than piecing it together with tro-tros and shared cabs, and that gap buys you a vehicle, fuel, a professional driver-guide and someone who fixes problems on the fly. The genuine cost drivers are how many of you travel, whether you come in the busy December window or a quieter stretch, the hotels you want, and the distances involved.

The straight way to a figure is to tell us the details. Send dates, group size and a rough wish list, and we return an itemised quote with nothing hidden. If you are mapping out the wider budget, our Ghana trip cost breakdown shows where the money really goes.

Questions people ask

How do I book from Minneapolis?

Send your dates, group size and a rough idea of what you want to see, through the form or on WhatsApp. We come back with a suggested itinerary and a clear quote, and nothing is confirmed until you are satisfied with the plan.

What does a private tour include?

A tailored itinerary, an air-conditioned vehicle with a professional driver-guide, fuel, and our coordination day to day. Hotels, entry fees and meals can be built in or left to you; your quote states exactly what is covered.

Can I customise the itinerary?

Yes, and most Minnesotan travellers do. Whether it is extra days with family near Kumasi, a gentler pace for older relatives, or a focus on the coastal heritage sites, we shape the driving and stops around your priorities.

Do you cater for larger family groups?

We do. A saloon car suits a couple, while a Toyota Hiace minibus carries a family or group comfortably. Group size is one of the first things we ask, since it sets the vehicle and feeds into the price.

Is a deposit required?

Usually yes, to hold vehicles and hotels for your dates, with the balance settled nearer the trip or on the ground. We confirm the terms in writing with your quote and never add charges you did not agree to.

Is it safe and dependable travelling this way?

Ghana is among the calmer countries in the region for visitors, and having a known driver-guide after a long journey adds real peace of mind. Read our Ghana safety guide for practical detail, and check your own government's current travel advice before departure.

Written by Abdul, founder of Ghana Travel & TourI started this agency in Kasoa Opeikuma, Central Region, in 2020. Our drivers meet flights at Kotoka, our homes are the ones we let in Kasoa, and the routes described here are the ones we run ourselves.

What I know about Ghanaian travel comes from doing it: filing passport and visa applications, booking flights and hotels, collecting people from arrivals at two in the morning, and driving the Accra, Tema, Cape Coast and Kumasi runs week after week. Where this guide describes how something works, it is because we have done it.

Rules, fees and timetables in Ghana change. I have deliberately not quoted figures that go stale — where a number matters I name the office to confirm it with. If you spot something out of date, tell me and we will fix it.
