Ghana tours from Montreal

From Montreal, Ghana is a clean one-stop journey, and English-speaking Accra is easier than francophone travellers expect. Here is how to plan the flights, the days and the ground.

The short answer

  • Montreal reaches Accra one-stop, via a European hub such as Paris, Amsterdam or Brussels, or via Addis Ababa.
  • Total journey time typically runs the better part of a day; confirm current flights before booking.
  • Accra runs in English, but francophone travellers find it easy and welcoming to navigate.
  • The coastal castles, Kakum and Accra fill a strong first week; a fortnight adds Kumasi and Mole.
  • We meet you at Kotoka and run the ground in air-conditioned vehicles with a driver-guide.
  • Send dates and group size for a tailored quote rather than a fixed package.

Ghana from Montreal

From Montreal, Ghana is more accessible than many travellers assume. There is no nonstop, but the one-stop routings are clean, and the European connections in particular are frequent. Montreal has a growing West African and Ghanaian community, and the city's long ties to France and francophone West Africa make it a natural jumping-off point for the region. Plenty of Quebec travellers who have seen Senegal or Côte d'Ivoire are curious about anglophone Ghana next door. Within Montreal's Ghanaian and wider West African community the trip usually travels by word of mouth, one family recommending an operator to the next, and that is largely how travellers find us too.

One thing worth saying early: Accra runs in English, but you will not feel stranded. English is straightforward to get by in, Ghanaians are patient and welcoming, and a good driver-guide bridges any gap. If you are new to travel on the continent, our guide to the best time to visit Ghana is a sensible first read.

Routing and timing from Montreal

You will connect once. The most common path is through a European hub, with Paris, Amsterdam and Brussels all offering onward flights to Accra, which suits francophone travellers who are comfortable transiting through Paris. The alternative is via Addis Ababa on an Ethiopian routing. Either way, plan for the better part of a day door to door once you factor in the layover.

Frequencies and fares shift by season, so confirm current flights rather than relying on an old schedule. Get your entry documents in order before you leave using our guide to the Ghana visa and e-Travel process. An overnight European leg into Accra helps you arrive closer to rested.

What to do on a first trip

Most Montreal travellers begin in Accra and turn to the coast. Cape Coast Castle and Elmina Castle tell the Atlantic slave-trade story plainly, and Kakum National Park's canopy walkway is close by, strung through the rainforest canopy. Our guide to the Cape Coast and Elmina castles sets out what the tour of the dungeons involves, so you arrive prepared for it. It is a heavy, moving few days that stays with people long after they fly home.

In Accra, leave time for the Nkrumah Mausoleum, the Makola market crush, Jamestown's harbour and the food. With two weeks we can add Kumasi and the Ashanti region or head north to Mole National Park for wildlife on a dawn drive. Our seven-day Ghana itinerary lays out a first week that never feels rushed, and we adjust it freely to suit your interests.

How we handle the ground

As a Kasoa-based team who arrange these trips every week, we run the parts that wear travellers out. We meet you inside Kotoka arrivals with a name board, take the bags and drive you to your hotel, however late the flight from Europe or Addis lands. From there you have a private, air-conditioned vehicle and a driver-guide who knows the roads, the sites and enough to translate the odd moment for a francophone traveller finding their feet.

Couples take a saloon car; families and groups spread out in a Hiace minibus. If you only need the arrival sorted, our airport pickup service covers that leg on its own while you handle the rest.

What drives your cost

We do not publish a flat price, because an honest one depends on your trip. The main levers are group size, since sharing a vehicle lowers the per-head cost; the season, with December and Easter in higher demand; the standard of hotel; how far you travel, as a Mole run adds fuel and driving days over a coastal loop; and private versus shared travel.

A private tour costs more than doing it alone, and we will not pretend otherwise. What you get back is time, safety on unfamiliar roads and a team who solves problems on your behalf. For a first trip to the continent, that is usually money well spent. Our airport cars can also be booked on their own.

Plan your Montreal-to-Ghana trip

Whether Ghana is your first trip to West Africa, a return to a region you already love, or a journey with family or a community group from Montreal, we build the days around what you want. We run these trips weekly and are used to helping francophone travellers settle into an English-speaking country without friction.

Ready when you are. Send your dates and group size and we will come back with a tailored plan and quote, no pressure. Plan my Ghana trip.

Questions people ask

Is there a direct flight from Montreal to Accra?

No. From Montreal you connect once, usually through Paris, Amsterdam, Brussels or via Addis Ababa. Expect the better part of a day door to door. Confirm current flights and connection times directly, as they change by season.

Will language be a problem if I speak mainly French?

No. Accra operates in English, but it is easy to get by, Ghanaians are welcoming, and your driver-guide bridges any gap. Many francophone travellers find the switch far smoother than they expected.

How do I book, and can it be customised?

Send your dates and group size on WhatsApp and we reply with a tailored plan. Every itinerary is built to order, so tell us what you want to see and we shape the trip around it rather than selling a fixed package.

What is included?

Usually an air-conditioned vehicle, driver-guide, fuel, route planning and airport pickup. Hotels, meals and entry fees can be bundled in or left to you. Your quote sets out exactly what is and is not covered.

Do you take families and groups?

Yes, from couples to families and community groups. Couples take a saloon car; larger parties travel in a Hiace minibus. Group size is one of the main things that shapes your per-person cost.

Is it safe and reliable?

Ghana is one of the calmer, more welcoming countries in the region, and we run these trips every week. You travel with a vetted driver-guide, we meet you at the airport, and someone is reachable throughout. We give honest, current advice rather than guarantees.

Written by Abdul, founder of Ghana Travel & TourI started this agency in Kasoa Opeikuma, Central Region, in 2020. Our drivers meet flights at Kotoka, our homes are the ones we let in Kasoa, and the routes described here are the ones we run ourselves.

What I know about Ghanaian travel comes from doing it: filing passport and visa applications, booking flights and hotels, collecting people from arrivals at two in the morning, and driving the Accra, Tema, Cape Coast and Kumasi runs week after week. Where this guide describes how something works, it is because we have done it.

Rules, fees and timetables in Ghana change. I have deliberately not quoted figures that go stale — where a number matters I name the office to confirm it with. If you spot something out of date, tell me and we will fix it.
