New Jersey's Ghanaian connection

Few places outside Ghana have as strong a link to it as New Jersey and the wider tri-state. Communities across the Oranges, Newark, Jersey City, the Bronx and Staten Island run churches, hometown associations, provision shops and restaurants where you can get proper waakye or fufu without a second thought. For many families here, a trip to Ghana is a homecoming rather than a holiday, and the questions we get reflect that: how to reach a specific village, how to time a visit around a funeral or a festival, how to bring elderly parents along comfortably.

That shapes how we plan these trips. Some travellers want the full tourist loop; others are visiting relatives in the Eastern Region, Ashanti or Volta and simply need reliable transport, a dependable airport pickup and a few well-run day trips slotted around the family time. Plenty want both at once, and that is the version we arrange most.

As a Kasoa-based team who arrange these trips every week, we are used to both, and to the mix of the two that most diaspora visits turn out to be.

Flights from Newark to Accra

Newark is the obvious departure point for New Jersey travellers, and the route has run both nonstop and one-stop over the years. A direct flight to Kotoka is roughly ten to eleven hours; one-stop options route through a European or African hub and can be easier on the wallet, if longer.

We will not print flight numbers, days or fares, because they change and we would rather you booked from live information than a stale web page. Confirm what is flying with the airlines or your agent, then send us your arrival details for a Kotoka pickup. If you hold a US or other passport, check our visa and ETA guide, and pick dates using the best time to visit.

Roots trips and the wider country

For diaspora travellers, the Central Region castles carry particular weight. Cape Coast and Elmina, together with the Door of No Return, are the heart of many heritage visits, and Ghana's Year of Return in 2019 did a great deal to open this up for families across the tri-state. We give these sites the time and quiet they deserve rather than marching a group through on a stopwatch, and we are happy to build in a stop for the naming ceremonies and community visits that mean so much to returning families.

Beyond the coast there is Kumasi and the Ashanti heartland, Accra's markets and nightlife, the Aburi hills above the city, and the Kakum canopy walk. Our guide for African American travellers speaks directly to roots trips, while the 7-day itinerary and castles guide cover the practicalities in full.

How we run it on the ground

Every trip is private. You get an air-conditioned car or a Hiace minibus for a family group, a driver-guide who knows the roads, and an itinerary that flexes around family commitments as well as sightseeing. Based in Kasoa on the coast road, we are well placed for both the Central Region sites and runs out to relatives in the Eastern Region or beyond.

Private travel costs more than relying on shared taxis, and we say so honestly. For a family arriving jet-lagged after a long flight, though, the value is obvious: no wrangling at the airport, no unreliable pickups, and a driver who can get you to a village few maps show. Our transport guide covers the alternatives fairly.

What a trip costs

We do not quote a fixed price here, and we will not invent one. A fair figure depends on your trip: how many are travelling, the season, the standard of hotel, and how far you range between the coast, Kumasi and family towns. A two-week visit with plenty of driving is a different budget from a week based near Accra.

Fuel, park fees, accommodation and the driver-guide's time all feed in, and Ghana's high and low seasons shift hotel rates. For a sense of the numbers, read our trip cost breakdown. Send your dates and group size and we will come back with a clear, itemised quote you can trust.

Questions people ask

How do I book a tour from New Jersey?

Send your travel dates and group size on WhatsApp or through the tours page. We reply with a tailored itinerary and an itemised quote, then confirm the details and your Kotoka pickup once you are happy.

Can you plan a trip that mixes family visits with touring?

That is most of what we do for diaspora travellers. We build private itineraries that leave room for family time and slot sightseeing and day trips around it.

What is included in a private tour?

Usually an air-conditioned vehicle, a driver-guide, fuel and park entry for planned stops, and airport pickup. Accommodation and meals can be included or arranged by you; the quote spells it out.

Can you cater to older relatives and children?

Yes. We choose vehicles and pacing to suit the group, and a Kotoka pickup means nobody is left navigating the airport after a long flight.

Is a deposit required?

We normally confirm with a deposit and take the balance closer to your trip. The exact terms are set out in your quote before you commit.

Is it safe and reliable?

Ghana is one of the calmer countries in the region for visitors, and we run these routes weekly with our own drivers and vehicles. Read our safety guide and check current official travel advice before you fly.

Written by Abdul, founder of Ghana Travel & TourI started this agency in Kasoa Opeikuma, Central Region, in 2020. Our drivers meet flights at Kotoka, our homes are the ones we let in Kasoa, and the routes described here are the ones we run ourselves.

What I know about Ghanaian travel comes from doing it: filing passport and visa applications, booking flights and hotels, collecting people from arrivals at two in the morning, and driving the Accra, Tema, Cape Coast and Kumasi runs week after week. Where this guide describes how something works, it is because we have done it.

Rules, fees and timetables in Ghana change. I have deliberately not quoted figures that go stale — where a number matters I name the office to confirm it with. If you spot something out of date, tell me and we will fix it.
