Ghana vacation planning checklist
The jobs that matter for a Ghana trip fall into a sensible order. Get the slow ones moving early, and the rest slots into place without last-minute panic.
The short answer
- Start with your yellow fever certificate and visa or ETA — they take the longest.
- Pick dates around the dry season, roughly November to March, for easier travel.
- Book flights into Kotoka (ACC), then decide your route and internal transport.
- Sort accommodation and a driver or airport pickup once the route is fixed.
- Pack light, breathable clothing, mosquito cover and any personal medicines.
- Confirm changeable details — visa rules, malaria advice — close to departure.

First: the paperwork that takes longest
Two jobs decide whether everything else runs smoothly, so start them first. Ghana requires proof of yellow fever vaccination for entry, and the certificate only becomes valid ten days after the jab, so book that appointment early. Second, sort your entry permission. Ghana has moved toward an electronic travel authorisation and visa-on-arrival options that have changed more than once in recent years, so check the current rules for your nationality rather than trusting old forum posts.
Our guides on the yellow fever certificate and the visa and ETA process explain what is involved, but always confirm the latest requirements with an official source before you fly, since these are exactly the details that change without much warning.
Keep a printed copy of your yellow fever certificate with your passport, not just a photo on your phone, because it is occasionally checked on arrival at Kotoka. If your passport is close to expiring, renew it now too; many airlines and border officials want at least six months' validity left.
When to go and how long to stay
Timing shapes the whole trip. The dry season, broadly November to March, is the most comfortable stretch for travel, with firmer roads and less humidity; the best time to visit guide breaks the seasons down properly. Harmattan haze rolls in around December and January, which cools the mornings but greys the skies for photos.
On length, a first visit works well over 7 to 14 days. A week gives you Accra plus the Cape Coast and Kakum loop; two weeks lets you add Kumasi and the long haul north to Mole without rushing. If you are weighing it up, our 7-day itinerary gives you a realistic shape to work from.
Flights, route and transport
Almost everyone arrives at Kotoka International in Accra (airport code ACC). Book flights once your dates are firm, then sketch the route before anything else, because the route determines your transport and hotels, not the other way round.

This is where you decide how you will actually move. Accra itself is easy on ride apps, but the longer legs to Cape Coast, Kumasi and Mole are where a private driver-guide saves real time and stress. As a Kasoa-based team who run these routes weekly, we can tell you honestly which legs are worth driving and which are fine on your own. Send us the route and we will quote the transport around it. Domestic flights exist between Accra and Kumasi or Tamale if you are short on time and want to skip a long drive north, but for most first visits the road trip is part of the experience.
Stays, money and getting connected
With the route fixed, book accommodation for each stop and arrange your airport pickup so arrival is calm rather than a scramble in the Kotoka car park. On money, the local currency is the cedi, and mobile money plus card-friendly spots in Accra cover most needs, though cash still rules in smaller towns; our money guide and cost breakdown set out what to expect.

Pick up a local SIM or eSIM on arrival for maps and WhatsApp, which is how most things here are arranged. Keep some small notes for tips, market stalls and the site guides at the castles and Kakum, who work for modest cash fees on the spot. It is worth telling your bank you are travelling so a card is not blocked at the first ATM, and carrying a little cash for the drive, since not every roadside stop takes mobile money.
Packing and health
Pack for heat and humidity: light, breathable cottons and linens, a hat, strong sun protection, and something with long sleeves for cooler harmattan evenings and mosquito cover. Our packing list is the full run-through, and the first-timer tips catch the small things people forget.
On health, malaria is present, so speak to a travel clinic or your doctor about antimalarials and take mosquito precautions seriously, especially at dusk. Drink bottled or properly filtered water. These are general pointers, not medical advice, and the right choice depends on you, so get personal guidance before you travel and check any current health notices for Ghana.
Pull it all together
Work through it in order and the trip builds itself: certificate and visa first, then dates, flights, route, stays, transport, money and packing. The slow, official jobs are the ones that catch people out, so front-load those and enjoy the rest.
Tell us your dates and group size whenever you are ready, and a real person in Ghana will help you tick off the list.
Questions people ask
How far ahead should I plan a Ghana trip?
Six to eight weeks is comfortable for most people. The two jobs to start earliest are your yellow fever certificate, which only becomes valid ten days after the jab, and your visa or ETA, since the rules can change. Flights and hotels are easier to sort once your dates and route are set.
Do I need a visa and vaccinations for Ghana?
Ghana requires proof of yellow fever vaccination to enter, and most visitors need a visa or electronic travel authorisation. The exact entry rules depend on your nationality and change from time to time, so always confirm the current requirements with an official source before you book flights.
How do I book a tour or driver once I have my dates?
Send us your dates, group size and the places you want to see, and we will put together a suggested route and a tailored quote. You can reach us on WhatsApp or through our Plan my trip page. We are happy to advise on the route even before you commit.
What is included when you arrange a trip?
That depends on what you need. We can cover a private driver-guide and vehicle, airport pickup, and help with route and hotels, and we will spell out exactly what a quote includes so there are no surprises. Just tell us how much you want handled and we shape it around that.
Is a deposit required to confirm a booking?
Booking terms vary with trip length and season, and we explain them clearly when we send your quote. We keep things transparent, with no hidden fees. Ask us directly and we will walk you through the steps before you pay anything.
Is Ghana a safe and reliable place for a first trip?
Ghana is one of the more stable and welcoming countries in the region and a popular first African destination. Take the usual sensible precautions and confirm changeable details like health advice before you go. If you want the logistics handled reliably, a local operator takes the guesswork out of it.
What I know about Ghanaian travel comes from doing it: filing passport and visa applications, booking flights and hotels, collecting people from arrivals at two in the morning, and driving the Accra, Tema, Cape Coast and Kumasi runs week after week. Where this guide describes how something works, it is because we have done it.
Rules, fees and timetables in Ghana change. I have deliberately not quoted figures that go stale — where a number matters I name the office to confirm it with. If you spot something out of date, tell me and we will fix it.
