Hidden gems in Ghana

Once you have done the castles and the canopy walk, the quieter corners are where Ghana really opens up. These are the lesser-known places our team keeps going back to.

Why go off the beaten path

Ghana's headline attractions are wonderful, but the country's real magic often lives in its quieter places, the fishing village with no signpost, the ridge road wrapped in morning mist, the reserve where you are the only visitors. As a team based in Kasoa who travel these routes every week, these are the corners we return to on our own days off.

Going off the beaten path does take a little more planning and, usually, your own transport, since public buses thin out quickly once you leave the main highways. The reward is space to breathe, warmer welcomes and prices that have not been inflated by mass tourism. You trade a little comfort and predictability for a great deal of authenticity, which for many of our guests is exactly the point of coming to Ghana in the first place. If you like the sound of adventure, pair this with our hiking in Ghana guide and the beaches guide for more quiet coastline.

The wild Western Region

The far west is Ghana at its most lush and least visited. Nzulezo, a village built entirely on stilts over a lagoon, is reached by a long, peaceful canoe paddle through reeds, and it feels a world away from the highway. The paddle out is genuinely part of the experience, gliding past waterbirds with only the dip of the oar for sound. Nearby, the Ankasa rainforest, one of the wettest and most biodiverse corners of the country, shelters rare birds, monkeys and butterflies for those willing to get a little muddy on its trails.

These are places where a knowledgeable local guide changes everything, both for finding the way and for understanding what you are seeing. Our guide to the Western Region, Nzulezo and Busua maps out how to reach them without wasting a day on wrong turns, as signage is sparse and the last stretches are often unsealed.

Highland air and gardens

Just north of Accra, the land climbs into the cool Akuapem Ridge. The old botanical gardens at Aburi are a shady, restful contrast to the coastal heat, with towering trees, century-old avenues and easy strolls. The winding drive up, with views back over the plains towards Accra, is half the pleasure, and the roadside stalls near the top are a good spot for fresh fruit and a cool drink.

It makes a superb day trip or an overnight escape when the city feels too warm, and the ridge villages are known for their woodcarvers, so you can pick up a souvenir straight from the maker. See our Aburi Gardens and Akuapem Ridge guide, and the wider Accra day trips roundup for more ideas close to base.

Quiet coast and surf towns

Ghana's western coastline hides some genuinely relaxed beach towns. Busua is a friendly surf spot with gentle waves for beginners, while neighbouring Butre has a lagoon, a ruined hilltop fort and barely a soul about, reached by a wooden footbridge over the water. Closer to Accra, Kokrobite mixes drumming, dancing and easy weekends, and is popular with travellers who want a taste of the coast without a long drive.

These places suit travellers who want to slow right down, swap the itinerary for a hammock, and let a day drift by. For the surf-town scene read our Kokrobite guide, and remember that sea conditions and currents vary along this coast, so always take local advice before swimming and keep an eye on children.

Plan your hidden Ghana

The joy of these places is that they resist a rigid schedule, so we build in room to linger. Many of them lie down rough tracks or need a canoe, a guide, or a well-timed tide, which is exactly where local knowledge and a reliable driver pay off. Road conditions and access can change with the seasons, so confirm current details before you commit to a remote route, and allow buffer time for the odd delay.

Between the far west, the highlands and the estuary at Ada Foah where the Volta finally meets the sea, there is more than enough here for a whole trip of its own, or a handful of memorable detours from the usual circuit. If you would like a trip that leans into the quiet and the unexpected, our on-the-ground team would love to help you shape it.

Questions people ask

What are the best hidden gems in Ghana?

Favourites include the Nzulezo stilt village and Ankasa reserve in the west, the Ada Foah estuary, the cool Aburi highlands near Accra, and laid-back surf towns like Busua and Butre. They reward travellers who slow down and explore.

How do you get to Nzulezo?

Nzulezo, a village built on stilts over a lagoon in the Western Region, is reached by a long canoe paddle through reeds. A local guide and your own transport to the launch point make the visit far easier.

Is Ghana good for surfing?

Yes, the western coast has friendly surf spots such as Busua, with gentle waves suited to beginners. Conditions vary with the season and tides, so always take local advice before entering the water.

What is there to do near Accra off the beaten path?

Do I need a car to reach Ghana's hidden gems?

Usually, yes. Many quieter places lie down rough tracks or off public transport routes, so a private driver and local guidance save time and open up spots that buses simply do not reach.

Ghana is generally welcoming, but remote travel needs sensible planning, local advice and flexibility for changing road and sea conditions. Confirm current access before committing to a route, and always follow guidance on swimming.

Written by Abdul, founder of Ghana Travel & TourI started this agency in Kasoa Opeikuma, Central Region, in 2020. Our drivers meet flights at Kotoka, our homes are the ones we let in Kasoa, and the routes described here are the ones we run ourselves.

What I know about Ghanaian travel comes from doing it: filing passport and visa applications, booking flights and hotels, collecting people from arrivals at two in the morning, and driving the Accra, Tema, Cape Coast and Kumasi runs week after week. Where this guide describes how something works, it is because we have done it.

Rules, fees and timetables in Ghana change. I have deliberately not quoted figures that go stale — where a number matters I name the office to confirm it with. If you spot something out of date, tell me and we will fix it.
