It depends on what you want to see

There is no single right answer to how many days you need in Ghana — it depends entirely on what you want from the trip. The country packs a lot into a manageable area, but the distances between the far-flung highlights are real, and the north in particular takes time to reach.

As a rough rule: a long weekend gives you a taste, one week covers the classic highlights, and two weeks unlocks the whole country including the safari north. Below we break down what each length realistically delivers so you can match it to your dates. If you are still deciding whether to come at all, start with why visit Ghana, then check the seasons in our best time to visit Ghana guide before you lock anything in.

A long weekend: 3–4 days

A long weekend is enough for a genuine first taste, and it works especially well if you are already in the region or combining Ghana with another country. Base yourself in the capital, soak up its energy, eat extremely well and take one day trip out to the coast.

Spend a day or two on markets, music and food in the city, then give one full day to the sobering, essential Cape Coast and Elmina castles, whose history stays with most visitors long after they leave. One week: the sweet spot

Seven days is the sweet spot for most first-time visitors. It is enough to combine the capital, the historic coast, the famous Kakum canopy walk and a couple of relaxed beach days without ever feeling rushed.

A typical week runs from Accra down to Cape Coast and Kakum, then west to the beaches before looping back to the city. Our 7-day itinerary lays it out day by day, with the canopy walk as the single most popular stop. If your dates are fixed and short, a week delivers the best highlights-to-time ratio of any trip length.

Two weeks or more

With ten to fourteen days you can add the two things a one-week trip usually leaves out: the safari north and the Ashanti heartland. This is when Ghana really opens up, revealing just how much variety sits within a single country.

Head north to spot elephants on foot — our Mole National Park safari guide explains how to reach it and what to expect — and weave in culture, craft and history along the way. Our 14-day itinerary ties it all together at a comfortable pace; stretch it to three weeks or more and you can travel region by region without ever watching the clock.

Making the most of your time

Whatever length you choose, the single biggest factor is travel time. Ghana's roads are steadily improving, but distances between highlights add up, so a realistic plan builds the drive in rather than pretending it away.

The easiest way to cover more ground comfortably is a private car with a driver, which turns long transfers into part of the experience and keeps you flexible if plans shift. Our getting around Ghana guide compares every option honestly, so you can pick the balance of speed, cost and comfort that suits your trip length.

Plan the right length of trip

In short: three to four days for a taste, one week for the classic highlights, and two weeks or more to see the whole country properly. Match the length to your priorities and you will come home feeling you experienced Ghana rather than skimmed it.

Questions people ask

How many days do you need in Ghana?

It depends on your priorities, but one week is the sweet spot for most first-time visitors, covering Accra, the historic coast, the Kakum canopy walk and some beach time. A long weekend gives a taste, while two weeks or more lets you add the safari north and Ashanti culture. Factor in driving distances when you plan.

Is one week enough for Ghana?

Yes, one week is enough to enjoy Ghana's classic highlights without rushing: the capital, Cape Coast and Elmina castles, the Kakum canopy walk and a few relaxed beach days. It offers the best highlights-to-time ratio of any trip length. Our 7-day itinerary lays it out day by day.

Can you visit Ghana in a long weekend?

You can, and a three-to-four-day trip works well if you base yourself in Accra and take one day trip to the coast. It is ideal if you are already in the region or combining Ghana with another country. Our 48-hour weekend guide shows what is realistic in the time.

How long do you need to see northern Ghana?

To include the safari north around Mole National Park you realistically need ten to fourteen days, because the drive from the coast is long. Two weeks lets you combine the north with the classic southern highlights and Ashanti culture. Rushing it rarely pays off.

What is the ideal trip length for Ghana?

For a balanced first visit, seven days is ideal; for a fuller experience including the north and Kumasi, aim for two weeks. Three weeks or more allows a truly unhurried, region-by-region trip. Match the length to what you most want to see.

Does travel time affect how many days you need in Ghana?

Yes, significantly. Distances between highlights add up, and the north in particular takes time to reach, so a realistic plan builds in the drive. Travelling with a private car and driver is the most comfortable way to cover ground and helps you make the most of every day.

Written by Abdul, founder of Ghana Travel & TourI started this agency in Kasoa Opeikuma, Central Region, in 2020. Our drivers meet flights at Kotoka, our homes are the ones we let in Kasoa, and the routes described here are the ones we run ourselves.

What I know about Ghanaian travel comes from doing it: filing passport and visa applications, booking flights and hotels, collecting people from arrivals at two in the morning, and driving the Accra, Tema, Cape Coast and Kumasi runs week after week. Where this guide describes how something works, it is because we have done it.

Rules, fees and timetables in Ghana change. I have deliberately not quoted figures that go stale — where a number matters I name the office to confirm it with. If you spot something out of date, tell me and we will fix it.
