Long-weekend road trips from Accra
You do not need a fortnight to get out of the city. These five routes from Accra each fit a long weekend, and each has a different flavour.
The short answer
- A long weekend is plenty for a proper trip out of Accra, if you pick a route that fits the time.
- The Cape Coast run pairs the slave castles with the Kakum canopy walk, a classic two-night trip.
- Ada, at the mouth of the Volta, is the easy one: beaches, the estuary and boat trips within a short drive.
- The Volta Region rewards a little more driving with Wli Falls, Mount Afadja and the lake at Akosombo.
- The Eastern hills, Aburi, Boti Falls and Koforidua, are the closest escape, cool and green above the city.
- We arrange the vehicle and a driver-guide for any of these, so you spend the weekend relaxing, not navigating.

A weekend is enough to get out
Accra is a lot of fun, but the country beyond it is the reason most people come, and you do not need a long holiday to reach it. A Friday-to-Sunday, or a long weekend with a public holiday attached, is enough for a genuine trip out of the city, provided you choose a route that fits the time rather than trying to cram in too much.
The trick is honesty about distance. Ghana is bigger than the map suggests, and a route that looks doable in two days can turn into a joyless dash. The five trips below all work for a long weekend without leaving you exhausted, and each has a distinct character, coast, estuary, waterfalls, cool hills, so you can pick by mood.
As a Kasoa-based team who run these routes every week, we plan them so the driving is sensible and the time on the ground is real. For any of them we can provide the vehicle and a driver-guide, which for a weekend away is worth its weight: you arrive relaxed rather than frazzled from navigating. Our Accra day trips guide covers the shorter outings if a single day is all you have.
Here are the five, from the classic coast run to the closest hill escape, with a sense of the distance and the right vehicle for each so you can choose with your eyes open.
1. Cape Coast and Elmina: the classic
If you do one weekend trip from Accra, make it the coast west to Cape Coast and Elmina. The drive along the coastal road takes a few hours, and the reward is two of the most significant historical sites in West Africa: Cape Coast Castle and Elmina Castle, the whitewashed forts where the transatlantic slave trade was run. The guided tours are sobering and essential, and they stay with you.
Pair the castles with the Kakum canopy walk, a short drive inland, where a series of rope bridges strung high through the rainforest canopy gives you a monkey's-eye view of the forest. Early morning is best for the walk, before the crowds and the heat. Two nights lets you take in both castles, Kakum and a stretch of coast without rushing.
A saloon car handles this route comfortably, as the roads are surfaced throughout. For the detail on the sites, see our Cape Coast and Elmina castles guide and our Kakum canopy walk guide, both of which we build into this weekend.
It is the trip diaspora visitors most often ask for, and rightly so; it is Ghana's most moving weekend away. Give yourself the Saturday morning for Kakum before the heat builds, an afternoon at one castle, and the Sunday for the second castle and the drive back, and you will have seen the region properly without racing.
2. Ada and the Volta estuary: the easy one
When you want a weekend that is more unwind than sightsee, Ada is the answer. A short drive east of Accra brings you to the point where the Volta River meets the sea, a landscape of lagoons, sandbars and river beaches quite different from the open Atlantic coast. It is the closest thing to a proper beach break within easy reach of the city.
The estuary itself is the draw. Boat trips take you out onto the water, to sandy spits between river and sea, and around the birdlife of the lagoons. Several riverside spots make relaxed bases for a night or two, and the pace is deliberately slow. It is the trip for a weekend where the goal is to do very little, very pleasantly.
The drive is straightforward on surfaced roads, so a saloon is fine, though some of the final approaches to riverside lodges can be sandy. Our Ghana beaches guide puts Ada in the context of the wider coast if you are choosing where to swim.
For a first weekend out of Accra, or a restful end to a busy trip, Ada is hard to beat. Time it for a sunset over the water and you will understand why so many people who come once come back.
3. The Volta Region: waterfalls and the lake
The Volta Region, east and north-east of Accra, rewards a little more driving with some of Ghana's finest scenery. The centrepiece is Wli Falls, the tallest waterfall in the country, reached by a walk through forest that is part of the experience. The upper falls demand a proper hike; the lower falls are an easier stroll to a plunge pool at the base of the cliff.
Nearby, Mount Afadja, one of Ghana's highest peaks, offers a steep but achievable climb with wide views for those who want a challenge. The region's hills around Ho are green and cool, and the Volta Lake at Akosombo, with its dam, adds a different landscape of open water and boat trips. There is enough here for a full, active long weekend.
Distances are longer and some roads rougher than the coast, so this is a route where a comfortable vehicle earns its keep, and a 4x4 is worth considering for the rougher approaches. Our hiking in Ghana guide covers Wli and Afadja in more depth for anyone drawn to the walking.
The Volta is for travellers who want their weekend to include a little effort and a lot of nature. The upside of the extra driving is that the region feels genuinely away from it all, with far fewer visitors than the coast and a landscape that changes from lakeside to forested hill within a short distance.
4. The Eastern hills: the closest escape
For the shortest drive with the biggest change of air, head up into the Eastern hills. The Akuapem ridge rises just north of Accra, and within an hour or so the city heat gives way to cool, green hill country. Aburi is the gateway, home to the botanical gardens laid out over a century ago, a shady, restful place to wander among old trees.
Push a little further and the region opens up: Boti Falls, a twin waterfall in a forest setting near Koforidua, is a lovely half-day with a walk down to the pool. The Umbrella Rock and the surrounding trails add to a day out. Koforidua itself, and the bead market at nearby settlements, give the trip a cultural dimension alongside the scenery.

The roads are surfaced and a saloon is fine, though the descent to Boti Falls involves steps rather than driving. Our Aburi gardens and Akuapem ridge guide covers this closest of escapes in detail.
It is the trip for when you want out of the city but not a long drive to get there. Because it is so close, it also works as a single overnight or even a full day if the weekend is short, which makes it the most flexible of the five.
5. The western coast: beaches and a lagoon village
West of Cape Coast the coast grows quieter and the beaches wilder, and for a weekend that mixes sand with something unusual, this stretch is worth the drive. Busua is the relaxed surf-and-swim beach town, with a laid-back scene and easy days by the water. It makes a comfortable base for a night or two.
From there, the stilt village of Nzulezo, built entirely over a lagoon and reached by canoe through the reeds, is one of the most distinctive sights in the country. The paddle out is peaceful and the village itself, home to a community living above the water, is unlike anywhere else in Ghana. It is a longer weekend given the distance, so an early start on Friday helps.
This is the furthest of the five, so a comfortable vehicle and a sensible plan matter, and we keep the driving to daylight. Because of the distance, it suits a three-night long weekend better than a tight two nights, so you are not spending the whole trip in the car. Our western region guide to Nzulezo and Busua covers the area fully.
Choosing the right vehicle
The right car depends on the route and your group. For the coast and the Eastern hills, where roads are surfaced, a comfortable saloon is ideal and economical. For the Volta Region's rougher approaches, or if you want to reach every corner of a waterfall trail, a 4x4 gives you more scope. For a group of friends or a family, a minibus keeps everyone together and spreads the cost.
Luggage and comfort matter more than people expect on a weekend, because you are covering real distances in a short time. A vehicle that is cramped or underpowered turns a fun trip into a chore. We match the vehicle to the route and the group when we quote, rather than defaulting to one option.
For any of these trips a driver-guide is the relaxing choice. Over a short weekend, you do not want to spend your limited time navigating unfamiliar roads or hunting for parking. A driver who knows the route lets you switch off from the moment you leave Accra. Our guide to getting around Ghana covers the wider transport picture.
Tell us the route and the group and we will recommend the vehicle that fits, rather than push you towards the largest or the priciest option.
Making the most of a short trip
A long weekend rewards a bit of planning. Leave early on the first day to beat the traffic out of Accra, which can be heavy on a Friday, and to reach your destination with the afternoon still ahead of you. Book accommodation in advance for popular spots, especially around holidays and the December season when the coast and the hills fill up.
Do not over-pack the itinerary. Two nights away is enough for one region done well, not three regions done badly. Pick the route that matches your mood, the coast for history, Ada for rest, the Volta for nature, the hills for a quick change of air, the west for wild beaches, and give it the time it deserves.
Keep long drives in daylight, carry water and some cash for fuel and small costs on the road, and build in a little slack for the unexpected. A weekend that is planned with a bit of breathing room in it feels far longer than one packed to the minute, because you actually get to stop and enjoy the places you have driven to see.
Think too about when you travel. The dry season gives you the most reliable weather for the coast and the beaches, while the greener months bring the waterfalls into their full flow, which is when the Volta and the Eastern hills look their best. There is no wrong time, only trade-offs, and we are happy to talk them through when you pick a date.
Planned sensibly, a long weekend feels like a proper break rather than a rushed errand, and it can easily become a habit once you see how much sits within a few hours of the city.

Questions people ask
Can I really see something worthwhile in just a long weekend?
Yes, easily, if you pick a route that fits the time rather than trying to cram in too much. Any one of the five trips here, the Cape Coast, Ada, the Volta Region, the Eastern hills or the western beaches, makes a proper two-night break from Accra. The key is to do one region well rather than three badly. We plan the drive so the time on the ground is real and you arrive relaxed, not exhausted.
Which weekend trip is best for a first visit?
For a first trip out of Accra, the Cape Coast run is the classic choice, pairing the slave castles at Cape Coast and Elmina with the Kakum canopy walk over two nights. If you would rather relax than sightsee, Ada and the Volta estuary is the easy option, a short drive east for beaches and boat trips. Tell us what you are after and we will match the route to your mood and your time.
Do I need a 4x4 for these trips?
Not for most of them. The coast, Ada and the Eastern hills are on surfaced roads where a comfortable saloon is ideal. A 4x4 is worth considering for the Volta Region's rougher approaches, or if you want maximum scope on waterfall trails. For a group, a minibus keeps everyone together. We match the vehicle to the route and the group when we quote rather than defaulting to one option.
Can you provide a driver for the weekend?
Yes, and for a short trip it is the relaxing choice. Over a long weekend you do not want to spend limited time navigating unfamiliar roads or hunting for parking. A driver-guide who knows the route lets you switch off from the moment you leave Accra, and adds local knowledge along the way. We arrange the vehicle and driver together for any of these routes as part of the plan.
How much does a weekend road trip cost?
It depends on the route, the vehicle, the number of nights and whether you take a driver-guide, so we provide a tailored quote rather than a fixed price. Distance is the main factor, the western beaches are further than the Eastern hills, for instance. We will set out clearly what is included, and what is extra such as accommodation and site fees, when we quote. Send us your plans for an honest figure.
How do I book, and how far ahead should I plan?
Send us your dates and the route that appeals, through the enquiry form or on WhatsApp, and we will plan the drive, match the vehicle and provide a driver. Book ahead for popular spots, especially around public holidays and the December season when the coast and hills fill up. We can also add an airport pickup if you are flying in for a short trip, so you start the weekend smoothly.
What I know about Ghanaian travel comes from doing it: filing passport and visa applications, booking flights and hotels, collecting people from arrivals at two in the morning, and driving the Accra, Tema, Cape Coast and Kumasi runs week after week. Where this guide describes how something works, it is because we have done it.
Rules, fees and timetables in Ghana change. I have deliberately not quoted figures that go stale — where a number matters I name the office to confirm it with. If you spot something out of date, tell me and we will fix it.
