Overnight getaways from Accra
Some of Ghana's best corners are just too far for a comfortable day trip but perfect for a night away. Here are the overnight escapes we send people on most, with honest notes on each.
The short answer
- Ada Foah, where the Volta meets the sea, is the classic relaxed beach and estuary escape.
- Cape Coast and Elmina deserve an overnight so the castles do not feel rushed.
- The Aburi ridge offers cool air and greenery just under an hour from the city.
- The Volta Region rewards two nights, with Wli Falls and Mount Afadja.
- One night suits Ada or Aburi; two nights suits the coast or the Volta.
- A private car makes these trips far smoother than piecing together public transport.

When a day trip is not quite enough
Plenty of Ghana's finest spots sit just beyond comfortable day-trip range from Accra. Push on for one or two nights, though, and you open up beaches, waterfalls, forts and hill country without committing to a full two-week loop. An overnight also lets you slow down, catch a sunset and a sunrise in the same place, and actually rest rather than spending the day in the car.
As a Kasoa-based team who run these routes every week, these are the escapes we recommend most often. If you only have daylight hours, pair this with our day trips from Accra guide; for beach specifics, our Ghana beaches guide is the companion piece.
Ada Foah for river and sea
Ada Foah is the classic weekend escape, about two hours east of Accra where the Volta river spills into the Atlantic. The appeal is the setting: a long spit of sand with the ocean on one side and the calm estuary on the other, dotted with laid-back lodges, several of them on their own little islands reached only by a short boat ride.
It is made for doing very little, swimming in the gentler river water, taking a boat out to a sandbar, watching the sun go down over the lagoon. There is kite-surfing for the more active, and the harmattan season around December to February brings reliable wind. One night is plenty to feel the benefit, though two is easy to justify once you have settled in. It is one of the most restful escapes among our day trips from the capital, but far better savoured overnight than crammed into a single day of driving.
Cape Coast and Elmina done properly
You can just about do the castles as a long day trip, but we honestly think Cape Coast deserves an overnight. Staying a night means you can tour Cape Coast Castle and Elmina Castle without watching the clock, add the Kakum canopy walk in the morning, and drive back rested rather than in the dark.
The castle tours are emotionally heavy, and rushing them does the experience a disservice. Our Cape Coast and Elmina castles guide explains why in more depth. There are comfortable places to stay in and around both towns, from simple guesthouses to a handful of nicer beach lodges, and the extra time lets you enjoy the coast rather than treating it as a checklist.
An unhurried second castle makes all the difference.
Aburi and the Volta for green and water
For cool air and greenery, the Aburi ridge is the quickest fix, under an hour north yet noticeably fresher than the coast. A single night up on the Akuapem ridge, with the botanical gardens and ridge-top views, resets you completely; our Aburi gardens guide has the details.

With more time, the Volta Region to the east is the standout. It is three hours plus, so give it two nights, and you are rewarded with Wli Falls, the tallest waterfall in West Africa, the climb up Mount Afadja and the calm of Lake Volta. It is greener and quieter than most visitors expect, and the drive up through the hills is lovely in its own right. Go prepared for a steep, sweaty climb at Afadja, and check the state of the trails after heavy rain.
How long and how to travel
As a rule of thumb, Ada and Aburi are happy one-nighters, while the coast and the Volta reward two nights so the driving does not swallow the trip. If you can string a few together, a coast-then-Volta week gives you an excellent contrast of sea and highland without ever feeling rushed. For city stays either side, our where to stay in Accra guide helps you pick a base near your departure road.
Getting to any of these by shared transport is doable but slow and involves changes, and for an overnight with luggage it rarely feels worth the hassle. Down west, our Kokrobite guide shows another easy coastal option barely an hour from the city, and for any of these a private car and driver takes the strain out of the door-to-door logistics.

Questions people ask
What are the best overnight trips from Accra?
Ada Foah for beach and estuary, Cape Coast and Elmina for the castles and Kakum, the Aburi ridge for cool air, and the Volta Region for waterfalls and mountains. Each is too far or too full for a comfortable single day.
How far is Ada from Accra?
Ada Foah is roughly two hours east of Accra by road. It sits where the Volta river meets the sea, with beaches on one side and a calm estuary on the other.
Is one night enough for Cape Coast?
One night makes the castles far more relaxed than a day trip, letting you tour Cape Coast and Elmina and add the Kakum canopy walk in the morning. Two nights is even better if you want beach time.
What is there to do in the Volta Region?
The highlights are Wli Falls, the tallest waterfall in West Africa, the climb up Mount Afadja and the calm of Lake Volta. It is greener and quieter than the coast and deserves two nights.
Do I need a car for an overnight trip?
Not strictly, but public transport to these places is slow and involves changes, which is tiring with luggage. Most visitors find a private car and driver makes an overnight far smoother.
Which getaway is best for relaxing?
Ada Foah is the most restful, built around doing very little by the water. Aburi is a close second for cool air and greenery within an hour of the city.
What I know about Ghanaian travel comes from doing it: filing passport and visa applications, booking flights and hotels, collecting people from arrivals at two in the morning, and driving the Accra, Tema, Cape Coast and Kumasi runs week after week. Where this guide describes how something works, it is because we have done it.
Rules, fees and timetables in Ghana change. I have deliberately not quoted figures that go stale — where a number matters I name the office to confirm it with. If you spot something out of date, tell me and we will fix it.
