Tema and Sakumono guide
Tema and Sakumono sit a short motorway hop east of Accra: a planned port city and a low-key beach with a birdlife-rich lagoon. Neither is a headline sight, but together they make a relaxed half-day.
The short answer
- Tema is Ghana's main port and a planned industrial city, laid out in numbered Communities under Nkrumah.
- The Greenwich Meridian passes through Tema, and there is a marker where zero longitude meets the town.
- Sakumono, between Nungua and Tema, has a broad beach and a protected lagoon good for birdwatching.
- This is more everyday Ghana than a polished resort strip, so come for atmosphere rather than luxury.
- The Accra to Tema motorway makes the drive quick, but check sea conditions before swimming anywhere here.
- We usually build it into a wider coastal day, easy to reach from Kasoa via Accra.

Tema: Ghana's planned port city
Tema sits about 25 kilometres east of central Accra at the end of the motorway. It is not an old town at all; it was designed and built from the late 1950s under Kwame Nkrumah as an industrial and harbour city, and it still runs on that logic. Instead of named districts you get numbered Communities, from Community 1 near the harbour outward, which makes directions here refreshingly simple once you learn the system.
The port is the biggest in Ghana and the reason Tema exists. You cannot wander the working docks, but the fishing harbour, the markets of Community 1 and the sheer scale of the place tell you a lot about how the country moves goods, from cocoa going out to almost everything else coming in. It is a practical, busy city rather than a sightseeing one, and we are upfront about that.
What Tema does well is give you a clear-eyed look at working Ghana. The wide, grid-planned roads, the industrial estates and the constant flow of trucks along the motorway are the story of a country that trades. If you have an interest in how a modern African city was designed from scratch, Tema is a fascinating hour or two, especially seen alongside the older, organic sprawl of Accra just down the road.
Standing on the meridian
Tema has one genuine curiosity: the Greenwich Meridian, zero degrees longitude, runs right through the town. There is a marker where you can stand with one foot either side of the line, the same imaginary line that runs through London. It is a small thing, a quick photo stop, but it is the kind of detail that makes a place stick in memory.

Pair it with a seafood lunch and you have a pleasant reason to point the car east. Because Tema itself is compact and functional, we treat the meridian and the harbour area as short stops rather than a whole day, and combine them with the coast. Our Accra day trips guide shows how the eastern side of the city fits together.
Sakumono beach and lagoon
Between Nungua and Tema lies Sakumono, with a long, open beach and, just behind it, the Sakumono Lagoon. The lagoon is a protected wetland and a good spot for birdwatching; herons, egrets and migratory waders all turn up, especially in the cooler months. It is under real environmental pressure from the city growing around it, which is part of the story worth knowing when you visit.

The beach itself is broad and often quieter than Labadi, but it is an everyday city beach, not a resort. Litter can be a problem in stretches, and the sea along this coast has strong currents, so we treat swimming with caution and often just walk the sand. Weekends bring out local families and the odd football game, while weekday mornings can be almost empty. For a fuller picture of the coastline, our Ghana beaches guide compares the options honestly.
Birders in particular get value here. Scan the lagoon edges early and you will pick up waders picking through the shallows, kingfishers and, in the migration months, species that have flown down from Europe. Bring binoculars, keep to the firmer ground, and give the fishermen and their nets a wide berth.
How we run it and what to expect
As a Kasoa-based team who arrange these trips every week, we know the drive: out of Kasoa, through Accra and onto the Tema motorway, which is quick outside rush hour and slow inside it. That timing is exactly why a private car with a driver-guide earns its keep here; you skip the connections and go straight to the good bits. Our getting around Ghana transport guide explains the trade-offs.
Come for the atmosphere, the seafood and the lagoon birdlife rather than expecting a polished resort strip. If you want more beach, we can push further east towards Ada and the Volta estuary and make a full day of it, or head the other way to the mellower sands of Kokrobite. Read our Ghanaian food guide before lunch so you know what to order.
See the coast east of Accra
Tema and Sakumono will not top a first-timer's bucket list, and we would never pretend otherwise. What they offer is a genuine, unvarnished slice of coastal Ghana, a meridian marker, a working port, a birdlife lagoon and good seafood, a short drive from the capital.
Tell us your dates, your group size and how much beach time you want, and we will design a private day that fits. Costs depend on the details rather than a fixed package, so we quote once we understand your plan.
Questions people ask
Is Tema worth visiting as a tourist?
Tema is a working port and industrial city rather than a classic sight, so we are honest that it suits curious travellers more than first-timers chasing highlights. The Greenwich Meridian marker and a seafood lunch make it a fun short stop within a wider coastal day.
Can I swim at Sakumono Beach?
The sea along this coast has strong currents and the water is not always clean, so we treat swimming cautiously and often just walk the beach. For safer swimming we can suggest hotel beaches or quieter spots, and we advise on conditions on the day.
How do I book this trip?
Send your dates and group size through the website or WhatsApp. We reply with a suggested route and a tailored quote, and a small deposit confirms the date. Every trip is private and built around you.
Can you combine it with other places?
Yes. Tema and Sakumono pair well with Ada and the Volta estuary to the east, or with Accra sightseeing to the west. Tell us your interests and we will shape the day accordingly.
What is the lagoon like for birdwatching?
Sakumono Lagoon is a protected wetland that attracts herons, egrets and migratory waders, best in the cooler dry-season months. It is under pressure from the growing city, so expect a wild, unmanicured spot rather than a formal reserve.
Is it a long drive from Accra?
No. The Accra to Tema motorway makes it quick outside rush hour, though city traffic can add time. From Kasoa allow a little over an hour and a half through Accra, and a private car keeps it simple.
What I know about Ghanaian travel comes from doing it: filing passport and visa applications, booking flights and hotels, collecting people from arrivals at two in the morning, and driving the Accra, Tema, Cape Coast and Kumasi runs week after week. Where this guide describes how something works, it is because we have done it.
Rules, fees and timetables in Ghana change. I have deliberately not quoted figures that go stale — where a number matters I name the office to confirm it with. If you spot something out of date, tell me and we will fix it.
