Why Tamale is worth your time

Tamale surprises travellers who expected only a stopover. Ghana's largest northern city is flat, spread out and famous for its bicycles, with a calmer, drier feel than the humid coast. The culture here is largely Dagbani and predominantly Muslim, and the welcome is genuine and unhurried. For many visitors it is the gateway to Mole National Park, but the city itself rewards a day of exploring.

As a team based in Kasoa who arrange these trips every week, we send travellers north regularly and handle the logistics that make it smooth. Below is what to do in Tamale and how to use it as a base. If you are plotting a longer trip, our Ghana 14-day itinerary shows how the north fits with the rest of the country.

In the city: markets, culture and pace

Start at the Central Market, a sprawling, colourful hub where you can browse shea butter, smocks, spices and everyday goods. The traditional northern smock, or fugu, is a genuine souvenir with real regional meaning. Wander the streets to feel the city's rhythm, dodging the constant flow of bicycles that give Tamale its nickname.

The culture is central to any visit. As a largely Muslim city, Tamale has a distinct feel, with mosques, modest dress appreciated, and a slower daily pace. Be respectful around prayer times and always ask before photographing people. Our etiquette and customs guide is worth a read before you go, and a few basic phrases help, though you will hear more Dagbani than Twi up here.

The pace is genuinely different from the south, and that is much of the appeal. Evenings are sociable and relaxed, the heat eases after dark, and conversations tend to be unhurried. Give yourself permission to slow down to match it rather than rushing through with a coastal mindset. A cup of tea at a roadside stall, a chat with a smock trader or an evening stroll often becomes the memory travellers keep.

Food and using Tamale as a base

Northern food is a highlight and noticeably different from the coast. Tuo zaafi, a soft dough eaten with a green or groundnut soup, is the staple, and the region's grilled guinea fowl, often served with a fiery pepper sauce, is a treat you will not find as easily down south. Street-side koko, a spiced millet porridge, in the morning is a warm, gentle start to the day, and shea butter and groundnuts turn up in many local dishes. Eat where it is busy and freshly cooked, and drink bottled or properly treated water. Our Ghanaian food guide gives the wider context.

Most travellers treat Tamale as a launch pad. From here you can reach Mole National Park for wildlife and the ancient mud-and-stick Larabanga Mosque nearby, one of the oldest in the region and a striking piece of Sudanese-style architecture. Our Mole National Park safari guide covers the park in detail, and the road out is part of the experience.

A realistic plan is a night or two in Tamale to feel the city, then a trip out to Mole with an overnight so you catch both an afternoon and an early-morning game walk or drive. That rhythm suits the north's distances and heat far better than trying to do it all in a single long day, which usually leaves you too tired to enjoy any of it.

Getting there and getting around

You can reach Tamale by a domestic flight from Accra, which saves a very long day on the road, or by driving, which is a real journey through changing landscapes. Both have their place: flights save time, driving shows you the country. Confirm current flight schedules and fares directly, as these change.

Around town and out to Mole, a private vehicle with a driver is by far the easiest option, especially in the heat and over the rougher stretches near the park. Our getting around Ghana guide explains the trade-offs, and packing for the drier, dustier north differs a little from the coast, so glance at our packing list. Bring sun protection, light long layers for dust and evening mosquitoes, and plenty of water, and remember the harmattan season can make the air hazy and the days surprisingly cool at dawn.

Written by Abdul, founder of Ghana Travel & TourI started this agency in Kasoa Opeikuma, Central Region, in 2020. Our drivers meet flights at Kotoka, our homes are the ones we let in Kasoa, and the routes described here are the ones we run ourselves.

What I know about Ghanaian travel comes from doing it: filing passport and visa applications, booking flights and hotels, collecting people from arrivals at two in the morning, and driving the Accra, Tema, Cape Coast and Kumasi runs week after week. Where this guide describes how something works, it is because we have done it.

Rules, fees and timetables in Ghana change. I have deliberately not quoted figures that go stale — where a number matters I name the office to confirm it with. If you spot something out of date, tell me and we will fix it.
