Why Greater Accra deserves your time

Many visitors treat Accra as a place to land and leave, but Ghana's capital deserves better. Greater Accra blends the nation's political history, a lively arts and food scene, Atlantic beaches and some of the country's best nightlife into one compact, energetic region. It is also the natural base for exploring further afield.

As a team based in Kasoa, just west of the capital, we are in and out of Accra constantly, and we always tell visitors the same thing: give it two or three days rather than half of one. For a curated shortlist, our guide to the top things to do in Accra is the perfect companion to this overview.

Below are the attractions we return to most, grouped so you can plan sensible, traffic-aware days rather than crisscrossing the city.

History and national monuments

Start with the story of the nation. Independence Square, dominated by the Black Star Gate, is where Ghana marks its biggest occasions and one of the largest public squares on the continent. A short distance away, the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park and Mausoleum honours the country's first president and independence leader, with a small museum and striking grounds.

Museum lovers should check which national museums and galleries are currently open, as exhibitions and opening times change. Together these sites give real context to modern Ghana, and they matter especially for visitors connecting with heritage and the story of the diaspora.

Opening hours and entry charges vary and can change, so confirm the current details before you set out rather than relying on older listings.

Beaches, markets and city life

When the city heat builds, head for the coast. Labadi, also known as La Pleasure Beach, is the liveliest strand in town, with music, horse rides and a weekend buzz. For calmer sands and better swimming you may prefer the beaches just outside the city; our Ghana beaches guide and our Accra day trips page point you to the best of them.

For pure energy, dive into Makola Market, a sprawling, sensory hub of trade, and the Arts Centre near the coast for kente, carvings, beads and drums. Bargaining is expected and part of the fun. In the evenings, Osu comes alive with restaurants and bars — see our Accra nightlife guide.

Food, nightlife and where to base yourself

Accra eats well. From roadside jollof and grilled tilapia with banku to smart restaurants in Osu, Cantonments and Airport Residential, the range is genuinely impressive. Our round-up of the best restaurants in Accra is a good starting point, and after dark the city's live music and bars are a highlight in their own right.

Where you stay shapes your trip. Osu puts you in the thick of it, Cantonments and Airport are calmer and more upmarket, and there are quieter options along the coast. Our guide to where to stay in Accra weighs the neighbourhoods.

One honest caveat: Accra's traffic is heavy and unpredictable, so group your plans by area and keep evenings flexible. If you have only a short stay, our 3-day Accra itinerary shows how to fit the highlights in.

Easy escapes from the city

One of Greater Accra's strengths is how easily you can leave it. Within a comfortable drive you can reach the botanical gardens and cool hills at Aburi, the estuary town of Ada on the Volta with its river and lagoon, and the historic slave-trade castles of the Central Region coast at Cape Coast and Elmina. Each makes an excellent day trip or overnight add-on without unpacking your whole plan, and together they show just how much variety sits within a couple of hours of the capital.

If you would rather slow down by the sea, the laid-back beach villages west of the city, such as Kokrobite, are within easy reach. These make relaxed day trips or overnight add-ons, so you can balance city buzz with a change of scene.

Just landed? Start your trip stress-free with a fixed-time meet-and-greet. Book an airport transfer from Kotoka to your hotel.

Let us plan your Accra days

Greater Accra rewards travellers who plan around its rhythms rather than fighting them. Get the grouping and timing right and the region opens up: history in the morning, markets and food through the day, and beaches or nightlife to finish. That local know-how is exactly what we bring, every week, for visitors exploring the capital.

Questions people ask

What are the must-see attractions in Accra?

Independence Square with the Black Star Gate, the Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum, Labadi beach, and the Makola and Arts Centre markets are the core sights. Add Osu for food and nightlife to round out the city.

How many days should I spend in Accra?

Two to three days lets you enjoy the history, beaches, markets and food without rushing. If you only have a short stay, focus on one area per day to beat the traffic.

Which is the best beach in Accra?

Labadi, or La Pleasure Beach, is the liveliest beach in the city and best for atmosphere. For calmer water and quieter sand, head to the beaches just outside Accra.

Is it easy to get around Accra?

Traffic is heavy and can be unpredictable, so plans work best grouped by area. Ride-hailing apps are widely used, but a private driver who knows the shortcuts saves the most time.

Are the markets in Accra safe to visit?

Markets like Makola and the Arts Centre are lively and generally fine to visit with normal caution. Keep valuables secure, expect to bargain, and consider going with a guide if it is your first time.

Can you arrange a driver and airport pickup in Accra?

Yes. We arrange private driver-guides for the city and its day trips, and fixed-time airport pickups from Kotoka, so your arrival and your days out are all handled by one team.

Written by Abdul, founder of Ghana Travel & TourI started this agency in Kasoa Opeikuma, Central Region, in 2020. Our drivers meet flights at Kotoka, our homes are the ones we let in Kasoa, and the routes described here are the ones we run ourselves.

What I know about Ghanaian travel comes from doing it: filing passport and visa applications, booking flights and hotels, collecting people from arrivals at two in the morning, and driving the Accra, Tema, Cape Coast and Kumasi runs week after week. Where this guide describes how something works, it is because we have done it.

Rules, fees and timetables in Ghana change. I have deliberately not quoted figures that go stale — where a number matters I name the office to confirm it with. If you spot something out of date, tell me and we will fix it.
