Why the Eastern Region

When Accra's heat and hustle get too much, the Eastern Region is where locals go to breathe. Rising into the Akuapem and Kwahu hills just north of the capital, it is a land of cool air, forested ridges, waterfalls and the enormous Lake Volta. Much of it sits within easy day-trip range of Accra, which makes it one of the most accessible escapes in the country.

As a team based in Kasoa, we run visitors up here regularly, and it never disappoints those craving green over grey. It pairs beautifully with a city stay — see our Accra day trips guide for how it fits alongside the capital.

Here are the attractions we recommend most, from botanical gardens to waterfalls and the great lake, with honest notes on getting to each.

Aburi Gardens and the Akuapem Ridge

The easiest and most popular escape is the Aburi Botanical Gardens, set high on the Akuapem Ridge only about an hour from Accra. Established in the colonial era, the gardens are a peaceful expanse of towering trees, shaded avenues and cool mountain air — perfect for a gentle stroll, a picnic or simply escaping the city heat. The winding drive up the ridge, with its views back over the plains, is part of the pleasure.

The ridge villages nearby are known for woodcarving, and the whole area suits a relaxed half or full day. Our dedicated Aburi Gardens and Akuapem Ridge guide has the detail, including what to combine it with.

Waterfalls and hikes near Koforidua

The Eastern Region is Ghana's waterfall country. Near Koforidua, the regional capital, Boti Falls is a beautiful twin waterfall reached by a flight of steps through greenery, and it is often visited alongside the nearby Umbrella Rock, a curious natural rock formation, and the pretty Akaa Falls. Together they make a rewarding half-day circuit for anyone who enjoys a walk.

Further afield, keen hikers can tackle the Kwahu plateau and its cliffs, popular for both walking and, at times, paragliding events. For routes and what to expect underfoot, see our hiking in Ghana guide, and pack sensibly for humidity and trails.

Lake Volta, beads and local colour

To the east, the region meets Lake Volta, one of the largest man-made lakes in the world, created by the Akosombo Dam. The dam town of Akosombo is a scenic spot, and boat trips on the lake — including longer cruises — offer a peaceful, watery contrast to the hills. It is also a gateway towards the waterfalls and mountains of the neighbouring Volta Region, and towards the estuary town of Ada where the river meets the sea.

Back in Koforidua, do not miss the famous bead market if your timing allows; Ghana's glass-bead tradition is at its most vivid here, and it is a wonderful place to shop. For more on crafts to bring home, see what to buy in Ghana.

Because so much depends on weather and season, check conditions first — our best time to visit Ghana guide helps you choose your dates. Waterfalls are fullest after the rains but trails can be slippery, an honest trade-off worth planning around.

Getting there and getting around

The Eastern Region's great advantage is proximity: Aburi is roughly an hour from Accra, and Koforidua and its waterfalls are comfortably reachable in a morning's drive. That makes the region ideal for day trips or a relaxed weekend without committing to a long journey.

That said, the roads climb and wind through the hills, and some approaches to the falls involve rough patches and a walk at the end. A capable vehicle, an early start to beat both traffic and midday heat, and a driver who knows the turnings all make the day far smoother. Public transport reaches the main towns but leaves you short of the sights themselves.

Arriving in Accra first? Begin with a fixed-time pickup and a named driver. Book an airport transfer from Kotoka.

Questions people ask

What are the top attractions in Ghana's Eastern Region?

The Aburi Botanical Gardens, Boti Falls and the nearby Umbrella Rock, Akaa Falls, Lake Volta and the Koforidua bead market are the highlights. The cool Akuapem and Kwahu hills also draw walkers and day-trippers.

How far is the Eastern Region from Accra?

Very close. Aburi is roughly an hour from Accra, and Koforidua with its waterfalls is comfortably reachable in a morning, which makes the region ideal for day trips and weekends.

Is Aburi Botanical Gardens worth visiting?

Yes. It offers cool mountain air, giant trees and shaded avenues only about an hour from Accra, making it one of the easiest and most pleasant escapes from the city heat.

Can I visit Boti Falls on a day trip from Accra?

Yes. Boti Falls near Koforidua is reachable on a day trip, and it is often combined with the Umbrella Rock and Akaa Falls into a half-day walking circuit. An early start helps you beat the heat and traffic.

When are the waterfalls at their best?

Waterfalls are usually fullest after the rains, but trails can be muddy and slippery then, while the dry season means gentler flow but easier walking. Check current conditions before you plan around a specific site.

Do I need a car for the Eastern Region?

It helps a great deal. Public transport reaches the main towns, but the gardens, waterfalls and lake are far easier with a private vehicle, especially given the hilly, winding roads and the walks to some sights.

Written by Abdul, founder of Ghana Travel & TourI started this agency in Kasoa Opeikuma, Central Region, in 2020. Our drivers meet flights at Kotoka, our homes are the ones we let in Kasoa, and the routes described here are the ones we run ourselves.

What I know about Ghanaian travel comes from doing it: filing passport and visa applications, booking flights and hotels, collecting people from arrivals at two in the morning, and driving the Accra, Tema, Cape Coast and Kumasi runs week after week. Where this guide describes how something works, it is because we have done it.

Rules, fees and timetables in Ghana change. I have deliberately not quoted figures that go stale — where a number matters I name the office to confirm it with. If you spot something out of date, tell me and we will fix it.
