Applying for a UK, US, Canada or Schengen visa from Ghana

What visitor visa applications from Ghana really turn on, from the online form and the appointment in Accra to the evidence that decides the case.

By , founder · Ghana Travel & Tour, KasoaUpdated 24 September 202610 min read

The short answer

  • All four applications follow the same shape: an online form, a payment, an in-person appointment in Accra for biometrics, and a decision made later by an officer you never meet.
  • The US visitor visa is the one that always involves a short interview at the embassy in Accra; the UK, Canada and most Schengen applications are decided on documents alone.
  • A Schengen short-stay visa is applied for at the mission of your main destination, or the country you enter first if the time is genuinely split evenly.
  • Cases are decided on whether your purpose is genuine and temporary and whether you can fund the trip, which is why bank statements, employment or business evidence and ties to Ghana matter more than the form itself.
  • A large unexplained deposit shortly before you apply damages an application, because it reads as borrowed money rather than normal finances.
  • No agent can promise a visa; the consular officer decides, and using fake documents is fraud that creates a lasting record against your name.

What a visitor visa application from Ghana actually involves

Every one of these applications follows the same four steps: an online form, a payment, a biometrics or interview appointment, and a decision made by an officer who never meets most applicants for more than a few minutes. The country changes the details; the shape stays the same.

You complete the form yourself or with help, book the appointment slot, attend in person in Accra with your passport and supporting documents, give fingerprints and a photograph, and then wait. Nobody at the counter decides your case. The person who does sits elsewhere, reads your file, and forms a view about one question: will you return to Ghana when your visit ends.

That is worth saying plainly at the start, because most of the effort people put into these applications goes into the wrong place. The form is administration. The documents are the argument.

Fees, appointment availability and processing times move constantly, and each mission publishes its own current figures. Check the UK Home Office and its visa application centre partner, the US Embassy in Accra, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada, or the Schengen mission you are applying to, on the day you apply. Do not rely on a figure you read anywhere else, including here.

The UK standard visitor visa

The UK route is an online application on the gov.uk site, followed by an appointment at a visa application centre in Accra or Kumasi where you give biometrics and hand over or scan your documents.

You fill in the form, pay online, book the appointment, and upload your supporting documents or take them to the centre. Your passport usually stays with the centre until a decision is made, though the exact handling depends on the service you choose. There is no interview in the ordinary case; the UK decides almost entirely on your paperwork.

That has one important consequence. If a document is missing or ambiguous, nobody phones you to ask. The officer reads what is there and draws a conclusion. A UK application has to be self-explanatory to a stranger who has thirty minutes and no reason to give you the benefit of the doubt.

A short covering letter helps more than people expect. One page: who you are, what you do in Ghana, why you are travelling, how long for, where you will stay, who is paying, and a list of what you have attached. It costs nothing and it tells the officer how to read the rest of the file.

The US B-1/B-2 visitor visa and the interview in Accra

The US visitor visa is the only one of the four that turns on a face-to-face interview, usually a short one, at the US Embassy in Accra.

You complete the DS-160 form online, pay the application fee through the designated bank or payment channel, and book an interview appointment. You bring your passport, the DS-160 confirmation page, a photograph meeting their specification, and your supporting documents. The interview itself is often only a few minutes at a window.

US law starts from a presumption that every visitor visa applicant intends to immigrate, and the applicant has to overcome it. That is not a slur on Ghanaian travellers; it is how the statute is written for everyone. What it means practically is that the officer is listening for a life in Ghana that you would not sensibly abandon.

Appointment waiting times for Accra fluctuate widely and are published by the embassy. If you have a fixed date to travel — a wedding, a conference, a graduation — start months ahead, not weeks.

The Canadian visitor visa and biometrics

Canada's temporary resident visa is applied for online through the IRCC portal, after which you are told to give biometrics at a visa application centre, and your passport is requested only if the application succeeds.

You create an account, answer the eligibility questions, upload scanned documents, pay online, and then receive a biometric instruction letter. You book a slot at the centre in Accra and attend with that letter. Biometrics, once given, are reusable for a period Canada publishes, so a second application may not need them again.

Because everything is uploaded, scan quality matters. Documents that are cropped, blurred, upside down or photographed on a desk in poor light are read by the same tired eyes as everyone else's. Use a scanner or a proper document-scanning app, keep each file under the size limit, and name the files sensibly.

Canada also asks for a fairly detailed account of your travel purpose and finances in the form itself, not only in attachments. Answer the form fully. Blank fields and one-word answers invite the officer to fill the gap with their own assumption.

The Schengen short-stay visa: which embassy to apply to

For a Schengen visa you apply to the mission of your main destination — the country where you will spend the most time — and if the time is genuinely split evenly, to the country you will enter first.

This trips people up constantly. Applying to the German mission because their appointments are available, when your ten days are in Italy and one night is in Frankfurt, is the wrong application. Missions check this, and some are entitled to refuse or transfer it. Work out the main destination honestly from your itinerary, then apply there.

Not every Schengen state has a full mission in Accra. Some are represented by another member state or handle Ghanaian applications from a mission in another country, and most use an outsourced visa application centre for appointments and biometrics. Confirm the representation arrangement for your destination before you book anything.

The Schengen application also expects travel medical insurance meeting a stated minimum cover for the whole stay, and a day-by-day itinerary with confirmed accommodation. A short-stay visa permits limited days within a rolling period; the sticker states your permitted days and entries, and overstaying by even a little follows you for years.

Bank statements, and why a sudden large deposit hurts you

An officer reads your bank statement to see a normal financial life that can comfortably absorb the trip — not to see a big number on the closing line.

Provide statements covering the period the mission asks for, usually several months, from the account that genuinely funds your life. Stamped or officially issued by the bank, not a screenshot. The pattern they want to see is income arriving on a rhythm, ordinary spending, and a balance that makes your stated trip affordable without emptying the account.

A large deposit landing a week before you apply does the opposite of what people hope. It reads as money borrowed to decorate the statement, and it invites the officer to doubt everything else in the file. If a genuine lump sum did arrive — a land sale, a matured susu, a business payment, a gift from family — attach the evidence of where it came from and say so in your covering letter. Explained money is fine. Unexplained money is a problem.

If someone else is paying, it is their financial evidence that matters, supported by proof of their status abroad and their relationship to you. Do not send both a sponsor and a thin personal statement without explaining who is actually funding what.

An unexplained deposit is worse than a small balance.

Our guide to the cedi, bank accounts and mobile money in Ghana covers how to get statements issued properly and what mobile money records can and cannot prove.

Showing genuine, temporary purpose and ties to Ghana

Ties are the evidence that your life continues here while you are away: work, business, property, dependants and commitments with dates on them.

If you are employed, an introductory letter on company letterhead stating your role, your start date, your salary arrangement, your approved leave dates and confirmation that your job is held for you. Payslips, an SSNIT statement and, where relevant, a PAYE or tax record. A signed letter with a phone number that someone will actually answer if called.

If you run a business, the certificate of incorporation or business registration from the Registrar General's Department, your TIN, business bank statements, a few invoices or contracts, and evidence that the business runs without you for the days you will be gone. A market trader with three years of consistent mobile money turnover has a real case; it just needs to be assembled.

Property and family follow the same logic. Land title or an indenture, a tenancy you pay, school fees receipts for children who stay behind, a spouse in employment here. None of these is a magic document, and no combination of them obliges an officer to say yes. They simply make the ordinary explanation — that you are going for two weeks and coming home — the easiest one to believe.

Sponsorship letters, invitations and building travel history

An invitation or sponsorship letter is useful only when it is specific, dated, signed and backed by the host's own documents.

A letter that helps contains the host's full name, address and telephone number, their immigration status in the country, their relationship to you, the exact dates you will stay, who is paying for what, and where you will sleep. Attach their status document, proof of address and their financial evidence. A warm paragraph saying you are welcome any time, with nothing attached, adds nothing to the file.

Travel history is the slow asset. A record of visits to countries with easier entry requirements — within ECOWAS, across Africa, or anywhere you have gone and returned on time — builds a factual pattern of compliance that no letter can substitute for. It is not a requirement and its absence is not fatal, but if you have several years before the trip you really want, this is what to build.

Some destinations are visa-free or visa-on-arrival for Ghanaian passport holders, and a couple of those trips, properly stamped in and out, are worth more than another folder of paperwork.

The interview, refusals, and the people who promise you a visa

Answer exactly what you are asked, briefly and truthfully, and stop talking. That is the whole technique.

Officers ask short questions: why are you going, who is paying, what do you do, who is at home, have you travelled before. They are checking that your answers match your file and each other. Long rehearsed speeches, invented job titles and stories that drift under a follow-up question are what sink interviews. If you do not know something, say you do not know.

The decision belongs to the consular officer alone. No agent, consultant or connection can promise an outcome, and anyone who tells you otherwise is either lying or planning to submit something false in your name. Fake bank statements, forged employment letters, borrowed identities and invented sponsors are fraud. They are detected more often than people believe, and the consequence is not just a refusal — it is a durable record attached to your name and passport that can block applications to that country, and sometimes others, for years.

A refusal is survivable. A finding of deception is much harder to recover from. If an application is refused, read the refusal notice properly, fix what it identifies, and reapply when you genuinely have new evidence. We set out how to do that in why visa applications get refused and what actually helps.

How Ghana Travel & Tour supports visa applicants

We help with the assembling, not the deciding. That means going through the mission's own current document list with you, checking your bank statements and employment or business evidence for the gaps an officer will notice, drafting a clear covering letter, booking flights and hotels in the form the application expects, and making sure your passport is valid for long enough.

We do not promise outcomes, submit documents we have not verified, or work with anyone who does. You can see what is covered on our visa and passport support page. Quotes are itemised and come from a named trip manager you can reach directly.

Questions people ask

Do I need a job to get a visitor visa from Ghana?

No, but you do need to show how your life here continues and how the trip is funded. Self-employed traders, business owners, farmers, students and retirees all travel successfully. What matters is evidence: registration documents, consistent turnover, school enrolment, a pension or a properly documented sponsor, rather than a payslip specifically.

How much money should I have in my account for a visa application?

There is no published threshold for most visitor visas, and any figure you are quoted as a minimum is guesswork. Officers look for a balance and income pattern consistent with your stated trip and your normal life. A modest account with steady activity reads better than a large balance that appeared last week.

Which Schengen embassy do I apply to if I am visiting several countries?

Apply to the mission of your main destination, meaning the country where you will spend the most days. If the time is genuinely split evenly between countries, apply to the one you will enter first. Applying elsewhere because appointments are easier there can get the application refused or transferred.

Does a previous refusal ruin my chances later?

No. A refusal is a decision on one application, and you may reapply. You must declare it honestly on future forms, including for other countries. What genuinely harms future applications is a finding that you submitted false documents or misrepresented facts, which can bar you from that country for years.

Can an agent guarantee my visa will be approved?

No. The decision rests with a consular or entry clearance officer, and no third party can bind them. Anyone promising a guaranteed visa is either misleading you or intending to submit false documents in your name. That is fraud, it is frequently detected, and the record stays attached to your passport.

How far ahead should I start a visa application from Ghana?

Start several months before your travel date. Appointment availability at the visa centres and the US Embassy in Accra fluctuates, and processing times are published by each mission and change through the year. Early application also gives you time to fix a missing employment letter or reissue a bank statement without panic.

Do I need to book flights and hotels before applying?

Usually you need evidence of your intended itinerary and accommodation rather than fully paid tickets. Reservations or a confirmed booking that matches your stated dates is normally enough, and Schengen applications in particular expect a day-by-day plan. Check the specific document list published by the mission you are applying to.

Written by Abdul, founder of Ghana Travel & TourI started this agency in Kasoa Opeikuma, Central Region, in 2020. Our drivers meet flights at Kotoka, our homes are the ones we let in Kasoa, and the routes described here are the ones we run ourselves.

What I know about Ghanaian travel comes from doing it: filing passport and visa applications, booking flights and hotels, collecting people from arrivals at two in the morning, and driving the Accra, Tema, Cape Coast and Kumasi runs week after week. Where this guide describes how something works, it is because we have done it.

Rules, fees and timetables in Ghana change. I have deliberately not quoted figures that go stale — where a number matters I name the office to confirm it with. If you spot something out of date, tell me and we will fix it.
