Why Valentine's in Ghana is sweeter than you expect

Valentine's Day is genuinely popular in Ghana, and it comes with a local twist: 14 February is also promoted as National Chocolate Day, celebrating the country's world-class cocoa. As a Kasoa-based team who arrange romantic trips most weeks, we love this time of year, warm, sunny and full of small, thoughtful gestures.

Expect red and white outfits everywhere, chocolate hampers in the shops and restaurants rolling out special menus days in advance. Radio stations play love songs on repeat, malls run promotions, and couples plan their evenings well ahead. February also falls comfortably in the dry season, so the weather is firmly on your side for beaches, boat trips and long, easy sunsets. For a sense of timing across the year, see our best time to visit Ghana guide, which sets February in context against the wetter months.

Romantic evenings in Accra

If you are staying in the city, Accra does date night well. You will find candlelit restaurants, breezy rooftops and live highlife and jazz spots, many offering Valentine's set menus and live music on the night itself. Fresh seafood by the coast, a quiet garden restaurant tucked away from the traffic, or a rooftop with a skyline view all make lovely settings, and it is easy to string two or three of them into one unhurried evening.

Our best restaurants in Accra guide is a good starting point for choosing where to eat, and it is worth booking early because the good tables go fast on the 14th.

Do confirm menus and prices directly when you book, as Valentine's specials and costs change every year and can differ from what is advertised online.

A coastal escape for two

For something slower, swap the city for the coast. Busua in the Western Region is a relaxed, low-key beach town, all soft sand, gentle surf and easy days, perfect for switching off together. Mornings drift by over breakfast, afternoons are for swimming or simply reading in the shade, and evenings bring grilled fish and cold drinks as the light softens. It is a favourite of ours for couples who want to do very little, very happily, and the two-hour-plus drive west from Accra is part of the wind-down.

Our Ghana beaches guide covers the best stretches of coast, and the Western Region guide goes deeper on Busua and nearby Nzulezo. If you are marking a special milestone, our Ghana honeymoon guide has plenty more ideas.

Sunsets, chocolate and thoughtful touches

Some of the most romantic moments here cost nothing. The Ada estuary, where the Volta meets the sea, is one of the loveliest places in the country to watch the sun go down, ideally from a small boat with a cool drink in hand.

Lean into Chocolate Day too: seek out locally made Ghanaian chocolate as a gift, and consider a cocoa-farm visit if your trip allows and one can be arranged in season. Ghana grows some of the finest cocoa in the world, so it makes a genuinely meaningful souvenir; our souvenirs guide has more ideas. Small gestures land well here. A handwritten note, a shared plate of kelewele from a street stall, or simply an unhurried evening together often mean more than anything expensive, and they suit the warm, easygoing spirit of the day.

Planning tips and honest caveats

A few practical notes make the day smoother. Book restaurants and hotel rooms early, as the 14th is busy and popular places fill up. Traffic in Accra can be heavy in the evenings, so allow extra time and, ideally, a pre-arranged driver so neither of you is stressing over parking or taxis.

Keep expectations realistic: advertised Valentine's packages sometimes differ from what is delivered, so confirm exactly what is included before you pay. For first-visit basics, our travel tips for first-timers are worth a read.

Skip the airport taxi queue. Land and go straight to your romantic evening with a fixed-price pickup. Arrange an airport pickup in advance.

Written by Abdul, founder of Ghana Travel & TourI started this agency in Kasoa Opeikuma, Central Region, in 2020. Our drivers meet flights at Kotoka, our homes are the ones we let in Kasoa, and the routes described here are the ones we run ourselves.

What I know about Ghanaian travel comes from doing it: filing passport and visa applications, booking flights and hotels, collecting people from arrivals at two in the morning, and driving the Accra, Tema, Cape Coast and Kumasi runs week after week. Where this guide describes how something works, it is because we have done it.

Rules, fees and timetables in Ghana change. I have deliberately not quoted figures that go stale — where a number matters I name the office to confirm it with. If you spot something out of date, tell me and we will fix it.
