Weekend break in Ghana

Only a couple of days to play with? Here are three tried-and-tested ways to spend a weekend in Ghana without spreading yourself too thin.

By , founder · Ghana Travel & Tour, KasoaUpdated 24 September 20269 min read

The short answer

  • A weekend in Ghana works best if you pick one theme rather than chase everything.
  • Option 1: an Accra city break — history, markets, food and nightlife.
  • Option 2: a beach escape to Ada Foah or Kokrobite for pure relaxation.
  • Option 3: a coastal loop taking in Cape Coast Castle and Kakum's canopy walk.
  • Base yourself well and use a driver — Accra traffic eats short trips alive.
  • Two full days plus arrival evening is realistic; three days is more relaxed.

Making a weekend count

A weekend break in Ghana can be genuinely brilliant, provided you resist the urge to do it all. Two or three days is not enough for the north or a full grand tour, but it is plenty for one well-chosen experience done properly. The trick is to pick a single theme, base yourself sensibly and let someone else handle the driving.

As a Kasoa-based team who run these short trips constantly, we usually steer visitors toward one of three shapes: a city break, a beach escape or a coastal loop. Where you stay matters more than usual on a short trip, so it is worth a look at our where to stay in Accra guide before you book.

Option 1: an Accra city break

If you want energy, food and culture, stay put in Accra. Spend a morning in historic Jamestown with its lighthouse, murals and boxing gyms, then dive into the vast Makola Market for the full sensory experience. Independence Square, the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park and a museum or two fill an easy afternoon.

Come evening, Osu and the Oxford Street area serve up some of the country's best eating and a lively bar scene, from smart rooftop spots to buzzing street-side chop bars. Our guides to things to do in Accra and Accra nightlife will fill a packed, rewarding weekend, and you can easily fold in a beach afternoon at Labadi. Keep in mind that traffic is heavy and slow, so cluster your plans by neighbourhood rather than criss-crossing the city.

Option 2: a beach escape

For pure switch-off, head to the coast. Kokrobite, under an hour west of the city, has a relaxed, music-loving beach scene and simple guesthouses, while Bojo Beach is a tidy day-trip favourite reached by a short boat across a lagoon.

With a little more time, Ada Foah, where the Volta River meets the sea a couple of hours east of the city, is our top weekend pick: sandbar beaches with the ocean on one side and the calm estuary on the other, gentle boat trips out to the river mouth, birdlife and easygoing lodges perfect for switching off. It is a genuine escape without a long journey. Swimming safety varies with tides and currents, so always ask locally before going in. Our Ghana beaches guide has more options to suit your style and budget.

Option 3: a quick coastal loop

If you would rather see something iconic, drive west to the Cape Coast area. In a well-planned two days you can tour the sobering Cape Coast or Elmina castle and walk the famous Kakum canopy walkway high above the rainforest, staying overnight nearby to avoid a punishing there-and-back day.

This loop pairs powerful, sometimes harrowing history with real forest nature, and it is one of the most memorable short breaks in the country; the guided castle tours are sobering but important, and the early-morning canopy walk, before the crowds and the heat, is magical. Read our Cape Coast and Elmina castles guide and Kakum canopy walk guide to plan the timing, and consider more Accra day trips if you have an extra afternoon on either side.

Making it work: logistics

The biggest weekend killer is transport. Accra traffic is heavy and unpredictable, and self-driving as a visitor is stressful, so a private car with a local driver is the single best investment for a short trip. It turns dead time in queues into productive movement and lets you fit three sights into a day instead of one.

A few honest notes from years of running these short trips: keep arrival day light, as international flights often land in the evening and you will be tired; carry cash for markets, entry fees and tips, and confirm current charges on the day rather than trusting old figures online; and build in a little slack, because things here run on their own gentle rhythm and a rushed weekend rarely feels like a holiday. Aim to be back in the city with time to spare before an onward flight, as traffic can be unpredictable. If this whets your appetite, a return trip using our seven-day itinerary shows how much more there is to discover.

Plan your Ghana weekend

A weekend in Ghana is short but it can be superb. Tell us which of the three shapes appeals and we will handle the rest, so your limited time goes on the experience and not on the road.

Only got a weekend? Pick your theme and we will build a tight, relaxed two-to-three-day plan around it. Plan my trip and we will sort the details.
Landing for a short stay? Make every hour count — book an airport pickup so a driver is waiting the moment you clear arrivals.

Questions people ask

Is a weekend enough time to visit Ghana?

A weekend is plenty for one well-chosen experience — an Accra city break, a beach escape or a Cape Coast castle-and-canopy loop — but not for a full country tour. Pick a single theme, base yourself well and use a driver to make the most of two or three days.

What can you do in Accra in two days?

In two days you can explore historic Jamestown, Makola Market, Independence Square and the Nkrumah memorial, eat superbly in Osu, and enjoy the nightlife. Cluster activities by neighbourhood because city traffic is heavy and can swallow a lot of your time.

Where is the best beach for a weekend near Accra?

Kokrobite and Bojo Beach are the easiest quick escapes just west of the city, while Ada Foah, where the Volta meets the sea a couple of hours east, is our top weekend beach pick for sandbars and calm water. Always check swimming safety locally.

Can you visit Cape Coast Castle and Kakum in a weekend?

Yes. A well-planned two-day coastal loop lets you tour Cape Coast or Elmina castle and walk the Kakum canopy walkway, ideally staying overnight nearby rather than attempting a tiring same-day return from Accra.

Do you need a car for a weekend in Ghana?

A private car with a local driver is strongly recommended. Accra traffic is heavy and self-driving is stressful for visitors, so a driver saves time, reduces hassle and lets you fit far more into a short trip.

How do you spend three days in Ghana?

Keep the arrival evening light, then dedicate two full days to one theme: city, beach or coastal history. A driver ties the sights together, and carrying cash for fees and markets keeps things smooth. Confirm current opening times and charges locally.

Written by Abdul, founder of Ghana Travel & TourI started this agency in Kasoa Opeikuma, Central Region, in 2020. Our drivers meet flights at Kotoka, our homes are the ones we let in Kasoa, and the routes described here are the ones we run ourselves.

What I know about Ghanaian travel comes from doing it: filing passport and visa applications, booking flights and hotels, collecting people from arrivals at two in the morning, and driving the Accra, Tema, Cape Coast and Kumasi runs week after week. Where this guide describes how something works, it is because we have done it.

Rules, fees and timetables in Ghana change. I have deliberately not quoted figures that go stale — where a number matters I name the office to confirm it with. If you spot something out of date, tell me and we will fix it.
