Africa in summer: where to go

The northern summer is one of Africa's most rewarding — and misunderstood — seasons to travel. Here is where to go from June to August, and why Ghana makes an easy, welcoming choice.

The short answer

  • June to August spans very different climates across Africa — there is no single 'summer' for the whole continent.
  • East and Southern Africa are in their dry winter: prime time for safaris and the Great Migration.
  • West Africa, including Ghana, is warm, lush and green during the light rainy season.
  • Ghana's summer rains are usually short showers, not all-day downpours, and the landscape looks its best.
  • Summer is festival season in Ghana, with vibrant community celebrations and lively coastal towns.
  • For a first African trip in summer, Ghana offers heritage, beaches, wildlife and culture in one compact, English-speaking country.

One continent, many summers

The first thing to understand about visiting Africa in the northern summer is that the continent does not share a single season. Africa straddles the equator, so while Europe and North America bask in July heat, the weather from Cairo to Cape Town varies enormously. Choosing where to go in June, July or August is really about matching your idea of a holiday to the right corner of the map.

Broadly, three patterns are in play. East and Southern Africa are in their cool, dry winter — ideal for wildlife. North Africa is baking hot. And West Africa, including Ghana, sits in a warm, green, lightly rainy spell that many travellers never think to consider, yet which can be a genuine delight.

The good news is that summer suits almost every kind of traveller, as long as you point yourself in the right direction. If you are still weighing up the wider picture, our guide to the best places to visit in Africa is a useful place to begin.

East and Southern Africa: safari season

If your summer dream involves lions, elephants and endless plains, this is your window. From roughly June to August, much of East and Southern Africa is dry. Vegetation thins out, animals gather around shrinking water sources and game viewing is at its finest. In Kenya and Tanzania, this is also when the Great Migration typically crosses the Serengeti and Masai Mara.

The trade-off is that peak season means peak prices and busier camps, so book early. Nights can be genuinely cold on high plains and in the desert, which surprises visitors expecting Africa to be uniformly hot.

Ghana is not a Big Five safari destination in the East African sense, but it does have rewarding wildlife of its own. If a safari is central to your plans, it is worth comparing options honestly — our Ghana versus Kenya safari and Ghana versus Tanzania and Zanzibar comparisons lay out the differences.

Why Ghana works in summer

Here is the case for West Africa. Ghana's summer falls in a lighter part of its rainy season, and the reality on the ground is far gentler than the word 'rainy' suggests. Showers tend to be short and often overnight or in bursts, leaving plenty of warm, bright hours for exploring. The reward is a landscape at its most beautiful: hillsides green, waterfalls full and the air freshly washed.

Crucially, this is when nature comes alive. The rainforest canopy at Kakum National Park is lush and dramatic, and the famous walkway strung between the treetops is a genuine highlight.

Beyond the forest, Ghana in summer means warm seas, quieter beaches and welcoming towns. Because English is the official language, everyday travel is refreshingly straightforward. For a fuller sense of when to come, see our detailed guide to the best time to visit Ghana.

Festivals, drums and coastal life

Summer is also one of the liveliest times to experience Ghanaian culture. The calendar fills with community festivals — colourful durbars of chiefs, processions, drumming and dancing that welcome visitors warmly. These are not staged performances but living traditions, and stumbling into one is often the memory travellers treasure most.

The rhythm of the drums runs through it all, from village celebrations to city nightlife in Accra. To time your trip around the biggest events, browse our Ghana festivals calendar. If culture is your main draw, our overview of a cultural holiday in Ghana pulls the highlights together.

Beaches and easy coastal days

Ghana's Atlantic coast is a quiet pleasure in summer. West of Accra, palm-fringed bays such as those around Busua and the Western Region offer surf, seafood and unhurried afternoons well away from the crowds you find in more famous beach destinations. The water is warm year-round, and sunsets over the ocean are hard to beat.

Ada, where the Volta River meets the sea, is a peaceful spot for river cruises, birdlife and lazy days. Combine a few coastal nights with the forests inland and you have a wonderfully varied week. Questions people ask

Is summer a good time to visit Africa?

Yes, but it depends where you go. June to August is peak safari season in East and Southern Africa thanks to the dry winter, while West Africa, including Ghana, is warm and green in its lighter rainy season. Match the region to the kind of holiday you want.

Does it rain a lot in Ghana in summer?

There is rain, but it is usually in short bursts or overnight rather than all day. You can expect plenty of warm, bright hours for exploring, and the landscape looks its greenest and most beautiful at this time.

Where can I see the Great Migration in summer?

The Great Migration typically crosses the Serengeti in Tanzania and the Masai Mara in Kenya between roughly July and October, though timing varies each year with the rains. Book well ahead, as this is peak season.

Is Ghana good for a first-time trip to Africa?

Very much so. English is the official language, the country is compact, and it combines heritage sites, beaches, forests and culture in one place. It is widely regarded as one of the friendliest and easiest introductions to the continent.

How hot is Ghana in June, July and August?

Coastal temperatures typically sit around 24 to 30 degrees Celsius, with high humidity. It is warm rather than scorching, and the sea stays comfortable for swimming throughout the summer.

What should I pack for Ghana in summer?

Light, breathable clothing, a light rain jacket or umbrella, insect repellent, sun protection and comfortable shoes for forest walks. See our detailed Ghana packing list for a full rundown before you travel.

What I know about Ghanaian travel comes from doing it: filing passport and visa applications, booking flights and hotels, collecting people from arrivals at two in the morning, and driving the Accra, Tema, Cape Coast and Kumasi runs week after week. Where this guide describes how something works, it is because we have done it.

Rules, fees and timetables in Ghana change. I have deliberately not quoted figures that go stale — where a number matters I name the office to confirm it with. If you spot something out of date, tell me and we will fix it.
