A relaxed coastal town
Winneba — known locally as Simpa — is a friendly fishing town on the coast roughly halfway between Accra and Cape Coast. It is often passed straight through by travellers hurrying west, which is a shame, because it offers a genuine, unpolished slice of Ghanaian coastal life. Fishing canoes crowd the shore, a large university lends the place a youthful buzz, and the beaches are broad and often quiet.
Winneba works well as an easy first taste of the coast: close enough to Accra for a day out, yet distinct enough in character to feel like a proper change of scene. It is one of the more rewarding day trips from Accra for anyone curious about ordinary town life beyond the capital.
Beaches and fishing culture
Winneba's beaches are long, sandy and refreshingly undeveloped, with a few beach resorts and spots to eat fresh grilled fish. As on much of Ghana's coast, the Atlantic here has a strong current, so take care swimming and seek local advice. The real spectacle is the fishing: early mornings bring crews hauling in enormous nets by hand, chanting in rhythm as the catch is landed and sorted on the sand.
It is a vivid, photogenic scene and a window into a way of life that has changed little in generations.

If sun and sand are your priority, Winneba fits neatly alongside Ghana's better-known beach spots on a wider beach holiday.
The Aboakyer deer-hunt festival
Winneba's claim to fame is the Aboakyer festival, one of Ghana's most famous and dramatic traditional celebrations, usually held on the first weekend of May. Two rival warrior groups, the Asafo companies, compete to catch a live antelope bare-handed and present it to the chief. The successful hunt is followed by a joyous, colourful durbar of chiefs, drumming, dancing and processions through the streets.
It is a thrilling, deeply cultural spectacle that draws visitors from across the country and beyond, and the town takes on a festive charge for days around it.

Where to stay and what else to do
Winneba has a decent spread of beach resorts, hotels and guesthouses, from simple rooms in town to more comfortable places along the shore with pools and sea views. Around the university you will find lively bars and cheap, tasty local eateries; along the beach, seafood is the obvious order.
Beyond the beach, the nearby Muni-Pomadze lagoon and wetlands are a Ramsar-listed site rich in migratory birds, good for a quiet morning's birdwatching, while the surrounding countryside offers easy walks.
With Cape Coast and Elmina an hour or so further west, Winneba slots easily into a broader cultural tour of the coast or a longer week in Ghana.
When to go
For beach weather, the dry season from November to March is the most reliable, with sunny days and calmer seas, though December and January can bring a dusty harmattan haze that dims the horizon. The bigger date in Winneba's calendar, though, is the Aboakyer festival on the first weekend of May, when the town fills up and rooms are snapped up weeks in advance, so plan and book early if you want to be there.
Weekends bring a livelier, more student-heavy buzz thanks to the university, while weekdays are quieter on the beaches. For the full drama of the traditional fishing you will want to be on the shore at first light, when the crews put out and haul in their nets. As ever on this coast, carry cash and respect the strong Atlantic currents when swimming.
How to visit Winneba
Winneba lies about 60km west of Accra, an easy drive of an hour to ninety minutes along the main coastal highway, with a short spur road down to the town itself. Buses and tro-tros heading west pass the Winneba junction regularly, from where shared taxis run into town. It is comfortably close enough for a day trip, but an overnight lets you catch the early-morning fishing and, in May, the full swing of Aboakyer.
A private car gives you the freedom to combine Winneba with Cape Coast and Elmina in one smooth run; see getting around Ghana for the details.

What I know about Ghanaian travel comes from doing it: filing passport and visa applications, booking flights and hotels, collecting people from arrivals at two in the morning, and driving the Accra, Tema, Cape Coast and Kumasi runs week after week. Where this guide describes how something works, it is because we have done it.
