The quick answer

If you only have a few days and it is your first time, start in Accra. It is where you land, it has the widest range of hotels and food, and it is an easy base for day trips to Cape Coast and the Aburi hills. If you care most about living culture, craft and history, Kumasi rewards you more deeply than anywhere else in the country.

The honest truth, and what we tell guests every week from our base in Kasoa, is that the two cities are not really rivals. They do different jobs. Accra is the shop window of modern Ghana; Kumasi is its beating traditional heart. With a week or more, see both and let the four-hour drive between them show you the countryside in between.

Accra: coast, culture and nightlife

Accra is fast, coastal and cosmopolitan. It is Ghana's diplomatic and business capital, and it feels it: rooftop bars in Osu, a serious restaurant scene, and beaches like Labadi within the city itself. History sits alongside the modern buzz.

  • Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park and the National Museum for the country's story.
  • Jamestown for colonial-era lighthouses, boxing gyms and street art.
  • Makola Market for the full sensory rush of Accra commerce.
  • Independence Square and the Black Star Gate.
  • Easy day trips to Cape Coast and Elmina castles and the Aburi gardens.

Evenings are a real draw: live highlife and afrobeats, seafood at a chop bar, or drinks on a rooftop as the coast lights up. For a deeper list, see our guide to the top things to do in Accra. It is also the more expensive city for comfort, and traffic on the Ring Road and Spintex can be heavy at rush hour, so build in patience and let a driver deal with it.

Kumasi: the Ashanti heartland

Kumasi sits inland, greener and a touch cooler, and it carries itself with the pride of the Ashanti kingdom. This is where Ghanaian tradition is not staged for visitors but simply lived, from funerals in flowing red and black cloth to the everyday authority of the chiefs.

  • Manhyia Palace, seat of the Asantehene, with a museum telling the kingdom's history.
  • Kejetia Market, one of the largest markets in West Africa, an overwhelming maze of stalls.
  • Bonwire and Adanwomase for kente weaving at the source.
  • Ntonso for adinkra stamping, and Ahwiaa for woodcarving.
  • Nearby Lake Bosomtwe, a serene crater lake for a calm day out.

Our Kumasi and Ashanti guide covers it all in detail. If you want to understand kente properly, the kente and textiles guide pairs perfectly with a visit to Bonwire.

Getting between the two

Do the drive in comfort. The Accra to Kumasi road is long; we run it in air-conditioned cars with a driver who knows the stops. Plan my trip and travel between the two the easy way.

The N6 highway links the cities in roughly four to five hours, depending on traffic leaving Accra and roadworks along the way. There are domestic flights too, at around forty-five minutes, which are worth it if time is tight. Many of our guests treat the drive as part of the trip, breaking it at Kumasi on a loop that also takes in Cape Coast to the south. For help judging how it fits your dates, see how many days in Ghana and our transport guide.

So which should you choose?

Match the city to what you actually enjoy. Pick Accra if you want beaches, a lively food and bar scene, coastal history and the convenience of being near the airport. Pick Kumasi if craft, chieftaincy, markets and traditional culture are what draw you to Ghana.

Short on time, say three or four days? Base yourself in Accra and take day trips to the coast or the Aburi hills. Have a week or more? Do both, ideally two to three days in each so neither feels rushed, with Cape Coast slotted in on the southern leg. The pace matters as much as the place: Kumasi rewards a slow wander through Kejetia far more than a rushed tick-list. There is no wrong answer, only the trip that suits you, which is exactly what we shape around each set of guests rather than selling a fixed package.

Let us combine both for you

The good news is that you rarely have to choose. A well-planned week can give you Accra's coast and culture and Kumasi's living tradition, with the countryside of the Ashanti region in between, all at a comfortable pace.

Plan your route. Tell us your dates, group size and interests, and we will build a private Accra and Kumasi itinerary with an honest quote. Arriving soon? Arrange an airport car from Kotoka.

Questions people ask

Should first-time visitors choose Accra or Kumasi?

Start in Accra. You land there, it has the most hotels and food, and it is the easiest base for day trips. Add Kumasi if you have a week or more and want deeper cultural experiences.

How long is the journey between Accra and Kumasi?

By road on the N6 it is roughly four to five hours, depending on traffic and roadworks. A domestic flight takes around forty-five minutes and is worth considering if your time is tight.

Is Kumasi worth the extra travel?

If you care about crafts, markets and living Ashanti tradition, absolutely. Bonwire kente, Kejetia Market and Manhyia Palace are experiences you cannot get in Accra. We can make the trip comfortable.

Can you combine both cities in one trip?

Yes, and we do it often. A week or more lets you enjoy Accra's coast and Kumasi's culture without rushing, and we can loop in Cape Coast too. We build it around your dates and pace.

Which city is cheaper?

Kumasi is generally a little cheaper than Accra for the same standard of hotel and food. That said, your overall cost depends far more on your choices than on the city. We quote honestly once we know your plans.

How do I book a combined Accra and Kumasi tour?

Send us your dates, group size and interests through our tours page or on WhatsApp. We will design a private itinerary, arrange the driving and airport pickup, and send a tailored quote.

Written by Abdul, founder of Ghana Travel & TourI started this agency in Kasoa Opeikuma, Central Region, in 2020. Our drivers meet flights at Kotoka, our homes are the ones we let in Kasoa, and the routes described here are the ones we run ourselves.

What I know about Ghanaian travel comes from doing it: filing passport and visa applications, booking flights and hotels, collecting people from arrivals at two in the morning, and driving the Accra, Tema, Cape Coast and Kumasi runs week after week. Where this guide describes how something works, it is because we have done it.

Rules, fees and timetables in Ghana change. I have deliberately not quoted figures that go stale — where a number matters I name the office to confirm it with. If you spot something out of date, tell me and we will fix it.
