Best months to visit Africa

Africa spans both hemispheres and every climate from Sahara to rainforest, so there is no single best month — only the best month for where you are going. This year-round guide breaks it down by region and season, and points to the ideal windows for a Ghana holiday.

The short answer

  • There is no single best month for Africa — it depends entirely on the region you choose.
  • Southern Africa peaks for safari in the dry months of May to October.
  • East Africa's best game viewing runs June to October, with a second dry window in January and February.
  • North Africa shines in spring and autumn, avoiding the scorching summer.
  • Ghana and West Africa are best from November to April, the main dry season.
  • Match your priorities — wildlife, beaches, culture or value — to the right seasonal window.

How to think about timing in Africa

Africa straddles the equator and stretches into both hemispheres, which is why a single "best time" simply does not exist. The Sahara, the Serengeti, the Cape and the Gulf of Guinea coast all run on different clocks. The most useful question is not "when should I visit Africa?" but "what do I want to do, and where?"

Two ideas cut through the confusion. First, the dry season generally means easier travel and, for safari, better wildlife viewing as animals gather at water. Second, the green or low season brings lush scenery, birdlife, lower prices and thinner crowds, in exchange for some rain.

Once you fix your priority — big game, beaches, culture or value — the right month falls into place. For a country-specific deep dive, see the best time to visit Ghana, and for inspiration on where to start, the best places to visit in Africa.

Southern Africa: May to October

South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe follow a southern-hemisphere calendar, so their dry winter runs from roughly May to October. This is the classic safari window: sparse vegetation and shrinking waterholes concentrate wildlife, and days are mild while nights are cold. September and October are the dramatic finale, with the densest game but rising heat.

The green summer, from November to April, brings afternoon storms, newborn animals, migrant birds and lower prices. Cape Town, by contrast, is a summer city, best from November to March for beaches and wine country.

Southern Africa is superb but long-haul and often pricey at peak. If you are weighing a marquee safari against a warmer, shorter-flight alternative, our Ghana versus South Africa guide is a fair, factual place to start.

East and North Africa: peak windows

East Africa — Kenya, Tanzania and Zanzibar — has two dry seasons. The main one, June to October, delivers superb game viewing and the dramatic Mara river crossings of the great migration. A shorter dry spell in January and February is excellent for the southern Serengeti calving. The long rains (April-May) and short rains (November) are cheaper but wetter.

North Africa — Morocco, Egypt and Tunisia — is all about avoiding extremes. Spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) are ideal, with warm days and cool evenings for the deserts, medinas and ancient sites. Summer is punishing inland; winter is pleasant on the coast but cold at night.

West Africa and Ghana: November to April

Ghana and much of West Africa run on a tropical wet-and-dry pattern. The main dry season, from November to April, is the prime window: warm, sunny days, calm seas and easy road travel. December through February can bring the dusty harmattan haze from the Sahara, which cools mornings and softens the light, especially in the north.

The rains fall mainly from May to mid-July, with a shorter wet spell around September and October. These greener months are quieter and lower-priced, with brief showers rather than constant downpours, and the countryside and waterfalls look their best.

Questions people ask

When is the best time to visit Africa?

There is no single best month, because Africa spans both hemispheres and many climates. Southern Africa is best for safari from May to October, East Africa from June to October, North Africa in spring and autumn, and Ghana and West Africa from November to April. Choose the region first, then the month.

What is the best time for an African safari?

For most classic safaris, the dry season is ideal because wildlife gathers at water and vegetation is thin. That means roughly May to October in Southern Africa and June to October in East Africa, with a second strong window in January and February for the southern Serengeti calving.

When is the best time to visit Ghana?

Ghana's main dry season, from November to April, is the prime window, with warm, sunny weather and easy travel. December to February can bring the dusty harmattan haze. The greener months of May to October are quieter and better value, with short showers rather than constant rain.

What is the cheapest time to visit Africa?

The green or low seasons usually offer the best value, as lodges and hotels discount and crowds thin out. In Southern Africa that is November to April, in East Africa the rainy months of April, May and November, and in Ghana the wetter May to October period.

Which month has the best weather across most of Africa?

September and October are often the best all-round months, with peak dry-season game viewing in the south, cooling temperatures in the north and easing rains in West Africa. That said, the right month always depends on the specific region and experience you are after.

When should I visit Ghana for festivals?

Easter brings the Kwahu paragliding festival, while December hosts the lively Detty December season and major events in Accra. Regional cultural festivals run through the year, so check the Ghana festivals calendar and plan your dates around the celebrations you most want to see.

Written by Abdul, founder of Ghana Travel & TourI started this agency in Kasoa Opeikuma, Central Region, in 2020. Our drivers meet flights at Kotoka, our homes are the ones we let in Kasoa, and the routes described here are the ones we run ourselves.

What I know about Ghanaian travel comes from doing it: filing passport and visa applications, booking flights and hotels, collecting people from arrivals at two in the morning, and driving the Accra, Tema, Cape Coast and Kumasi runs week after week. Where this guide describes how something works, it is because we have done it.

Rules, fees and timetables in Ghana change. I have deliberately not quoted figures that go stale — where a number matters I name the office to confirm it with. If you spot something out of date, tell me and we will fix it.
