  • You complete an online form, then attend a visa centre appointment in person.
  • Business and some visit visas often require an invitation from China.
  • Requirements are detailed, so accuracy and consistency matter a great deal.
  • Fees, forms and processing times change, so always confirm on the official visa centre site.
  • We help you choose the right category, prepare documents and arrange the trip.

Chinese visa categories

China organises its visas by letter, and picking the right one is essential. The L visa is for tourism, the M visa is for commercial and trade activities, the F visa covers non-commercial visits and exchanges, and there are separate categories for study (X), work (Z) and family. For most Ghanaian travellers it is L for a holiday or M for business.

Each category has its own supporting documents, so applying under the wrong one wastes time and money and can lead to a straightforward refusal. Some travellers also need to think about entry validity and the number of entries, because a single-entry visa will not allow you to pop out to a neighbouring country and come back. If you are comparing destinations or want the ground rules that apply everywhere, read our visa requirements explained guide alongside this one. Choosing correctly at the start is the single easiest way to keep your application on track.

The application and appointment process

The process generally runs in stages. You complete the online application form, print and sign it, then book an appointment at the Chinese visa application service centre that handles your region. You attend in person to submit documents and, in most cases, give biometrics such as fingerprints. After processing you collect your passport or have it returned.

Fill the form carefully — gaps, guesses or inconsistencies cause delays and refusals. Do not buy non-refundable flights before your visa is issued. Fees, forms and processing times change from time to time, so confirm the current details on the official visa centre website rather than an old blog post. It also helps to read common visa refusal reasons before you go so your file avoids the usual weaknesses.

Documents and invitations

Requirements vary by category, but a typical file includes a passport valid well beyond your trip with blank pages, the signed application form, a recent photograph to the required specification, and proof of your travel plans. Tourist applicants usually show flight and hotel reservations and an itinerary; business applicants generally need an invitation letter from a company or partner in China.

You may also be asked for proof of funds and employment. Make sure your photograph meets the standard first time — our photo and document requirements guide explains what is accepted — and check whether a yellow fever certificate applies to your route.

How to prepare well

Consistency is everything. Your form, itinerary, invitation and financial evidence should all tell the same story with matching dates and details. Write clearly, answer every question, and never submit false documents — doing so leads to refusal and can cause lasting problems. If you have a genuine host or business partner in China, their invitation and details strengthen your case considerably.

Show ties to Ghana — a job, business or family that give you clear reasons to return — and arrange travel insurance where relevant. A tidy travel history helps too, especially if it includes previous trips you completed and returned from on time. Double-check the small details before your appointment: your name spelled exactly as in your passport, correct dates, and a photo that meets the exact size and background rules, since a rejected photo alone can send you home to book another appointment. As with every country, no agent can promise a visa; what we can do is help you present a complete and convincing application.

Questions people ask

What are the main Chinese visa categories?

China uses letter codes: L for tourism, M for business and trade, F for non-commercial visits, plus X for study, Z for work and others for family. Most travellers from Ghana need L or M.

Do I need to apply in person?

You complete the form online, but you generally attend a Chinese visa application service centre appointment in person to submit documents and give biometrics such as fingerprints. Confirm the current arrangements before you go.

Do I need an invitation letter?

Business (M) and some visit visas usually require an invitation from a company or partner in China. Tourist (L) applicants typically show reservations and an itinerary instead. Requirements vary, so check for your category.

How much is a China visa and how long does it take?

Fees and processing times vary and change over time. We do not quote fixed figures — confirm the current cost and turnaround on the official visa centre website, or ask us for up-to-date guidance.

What documents will I need?

Typically a valid passport with blank pages, a signed application form, a recent photo to specification, and proof of your plans — reservations and itinerary for tourism, or an invitation for business, plus funds and employment evidence.

Can you guarantee my China visa?

No honest agent can guarantee a visa — the decision rests with the authorities. We help you pick the right category and submit a complete, consistent application, which is the best way to improve your chances.

Written by Abdul, founder of Ghana Travel & TourI started this agency in Kasoa Opeikuma, Central Region, in 2020. Our drivers meet flights at Kotoka, our homes are the ones we let in Kasoa, and the routes described here are the ones we run ourselves.

What I know about Ghanaian travel comes from doing it: filing passport and visa applications, booking flights and hotels, collecting people from arrivals at two in the morning, and driving the Accra, Tema, Cape Coast and Kumasi runs week after week. Where this guide describes how something works, it is because we have done it.

Rules, fees and timetables in Ghana change. I have deliberately not quoted figures that go stale — where a number matters I name the office to confirm it with. If you spot something out of date, tell me and we will fix it.
