How this 10-day route works
Ten days is arguably the ideal length for a first visit to Ghana. It is long enough to see the essential coast, the cultural heart in Kumasi and a genuine slice of the wild north, but short enough to stay affordable and focused. This itinerary runs as a loop from Accra so you never backtrack unnecessarily.
The rhythm is simple: two nights easing in and out of the capital, three on the historic central coast, a Kumasi cultural stop, then either the northern savannah for wildlife or a relaxed beach finish. If you have more or less time, it scales neatly — compare our 7-day itinerary and 14-day itinerary, or read how many days in Ghana you really need.
Days 1 to 3: Accra and the coast
Arrive in Accra and take your first day gently: markets, the seafront, Independence Square and a first taste of jollof and grilled tilapia. Ease into the pace, adjust to the heat and let the city introduce itself before you commit to a full day of sightseeing. Accra's galleries, museums and lively night spots help you shape day two around your interests, from art galleries and the Nkrumah memorial to lively night spots and the buzzing Osu district.
On day three, drive west along the coast to Cape Coast, roughly three hours from the capital. Settle into your base, then spend the afternoon at Cape Coast Castle, a sobering and essential visit whose dungeons and Door of No Return anchor any Ghana trip in its deeper history.
Our Cape Coast and Elmina castles guide explains the history and how to book a good guide.
Days 4 to 5: Kakum and Elmina
Start day four early at Kakum National Park, where a series of rope bridges strung between giant trees forms a canopy walkway high above the rainforest floor. Going first thing means cooler air, better wildlife and far fewer crowds jostling on the bridges, and the early light through the mist is unforgettable.

Back on the coast, visit Elmina Castle, the oldest European building in sub-Saharan Africa, and wander the colourful fishing harbour below it. Day five is yours to slow down — a quiet beach, a stilt village trip, or more time with the history. Read our Kakum canopy walk guide for timing and what to wear, and check the best time to visit Ghana so the weather is on your side.
Days 6 to 8: Kumasi and the north
Head inland to Kumasi, the Ashanti capital, for royal history, the vast Kejetia market and the craft villages nearby where kente is woven and adinkra stamped by hand. The Manhyia Palace museum tells the story of the Ashanti kingdom, while the surrounding workshops let you watch centuries-old techniques still practised today. Give it a full day using our Kumasi and Ashanti guide.

From Kumasi, continue north to Mole National Park, Ghana's premier safari destination, where you can spot elephants, antelope and warthogs on foot or by jeep. It is a long drive, so many travellers fly Accra to Tamale to save a day. Our Mole safari guide covers logistics and weighs up driving versus flying.
Days 9 to 10: Return and unwind
Make your way back towards Accra, either flying from Tamale or breaking the drive with an overnight stop. Use your final full day to unwind — last-minute shopping for crafts and textiles, a leisurely lunch, and a proper farewell to the city before your flight home.
If you would rather skip the far north on this trip, swap Mole for two nights on the western beaches at Busua for a relaxed finish. Either way, keep the last day light so a delayed transfer never threatens your flight.

Questions people ask
Is 10 days enough for Ghana?
Yes, ten days is a great length for a first trip. It comfortably covers Accra, the Cape Coast castles, Kakum and Kumasi, with time for either a northern safari or a beach finish. You will see the essentials without feeling rushed.
What is the best 10-day Ghana route?
A loop from Accra works best: coast first for Cape Coast, Elmina and Kakum, then inland to Kumasi, then north to Mole or back to the beaches. This avoids backtracking and keeps drive days manageable. We can adjust it to your interests.
Should I fly or drive to the north?
For Mole National Park, flying from Accra to Tamale saves a very long drive and effectively gives you an extra day. Driving is cheaper and lets you see more countryside but eats into your time. On a 10-day trip, flying one leg is often worth it.
When is the best time to do this itinerary?
The dry season from roughly November to March is easiest, with better roads and wildlife viewing at Mole. The wet season is greener and quieter but can slow northern travel. Check our best-time-to-visit guide before booking.
Can this trip be shortened to 7 days?
Yes. Drop the northern safari and focus on Accra, Cape Coast, Kakum and Kumasi for a tighter seven-day version. Our dedicated 7-day itinerary lays this out in detail. We can help you decide what to prioritise.
How much does a 10-day Ghana trip cost?
Costs vary widely with accommodation style and whether you use a private driver or internal flights. Ghana offers good value across budgets, with mid-range trips being especially cost-effective. We provide a clear quote based on your chosen route and comfort level.
What I know about Ghanaian travel comes from doing it: filing passport and visa applications, booking flights and hotels, collecting people from arrivals at two in the morning, and driving the Accra, Tema, Cape Coast and Kumasi runs week after week. Where this guide describes how something works, it is because we have done it.
Rules, fees and timetables in Ghana change. I have deliberately not quoted figures that go stale — where a number matters I name the office to confirm it with. If you spot something out of date, tell me and we will fix it.
