March weather: hot, dry and clear

March is the last full month of the dry season in the south, and it brings the heat. Coastal afternoons around Accra and Cape Coast sit in the low to mid thirties Celsius, but the real furnace is inland and up north, where Kumasi, Tamale and the Mole area regularly climb into the high thirties. Nights stay warm. Humidity is still relatively low compared with the rains, so it is a dry, strong heat rather than a sticky one.

The upside is clarity. With the Harmattan haze usually gone by now, skies open up and long views come back, which makes March one of the better months for photographs and for spotting wildlife at water holes. A stray thunderstorm can arrive late in the month as the atmosphere builds towards April's rains, but it will not derail a trip. Our weather guide tracks how the pattern shifts week to week.

Independence Day on 6 March

The 6th is the day the whole country wears red, gold and green. Ghana became the first sub-Saharan African nation to gain independence, in 1957, and the anniversary is marked with a national parade, school marches, drumming and speeches. In Accra the main event centres on Black Star Square, though celebrations ripple out to towns across the country.

It is a genuinely moving morning if you can be here for it, and it gives real texture to a trip. Practical notes: expect road closures near the parade routes, an early start and crowds, so we plan the day with time to spare. Dates and formats can shift year to year, so please confirm the current arrangements rather than assume. Our festivals calendar keeps the wider picture.

The best month for the north

Dry ground and thinning bush make March a strong month for the north. At Mole National Park the vegetation has died back and animals gather at the remaining water holes, so elephants, antelope and warthogs are easier to see, whether you walk with an armed ranger or take a vehicle safari. The drive up is long but rewarding, and the light is superb now.

On the way you can break the journey in Kumasi, the Ashanti heartland, for the Manhyia Palace, the vast Kejetia market and the kente weaving villages at Bonwire and Adanwomase. Our Mole safari guide and the Kumasi guide cover both in detail. This is exactly the kind of up-country loop we run as a private trip, with the driving broken sensibly so the heat never becomes the story. We usually build in an overnight in Kumasi and a dawn game walk at Mole, when the animals are most active and the air is still bearable.

Coast and capital in March

If you would rather stay south, the coast is still dry and inviting. Cape Coast and Elmina castles, the Kakum canopy walk and a slow day at Busua or Ada all work well; just start early and keep water to hand, because the midday sun in March has real weight. In Accra, the city is at full tilt, with the markets, the food and the nightlife all going strong.

March is also a good month to eat well; the food guide points you to the dishes worth seeking out, from waakye breakfasts to grilled tilapia with banku. Pack light cotton, a hat and real sun protection, as our packing list spells out.

Beat the March heat. We start early, pace the driving and build in shade and swims. Plan a comfortable route on our Plan my trip page.

How we plan a March trip

As a Kasoa-based team who run these routes every week, we build March itineraries to use the dry, clear weather and to manage the heat honestly. That means air-conditioned vehicles, early departures, longer drives split across the cooler parts of the day, and a driver-guide who reads the conditions rather than pushing through the hottest hours.

Time it around Independence Day. Want to be here for 6 March? Send your dates early and we will build the trip around the parade, via Plan my trip.

We can meet you at Kotoka on arrival so your first day is calm, then take you wherever the month is at its best, from Mole in the north to the castles on the coast.

A smooth landing. Book a private airport pickup and start your trip relaxed rather than haggling for a taxi.

Questions people ask

Is March a good time to visit Ghana?

Yes, particularly if you want clear skies and the northern parks. March is dry with the Harmattan gone, so views are sharp and wildlife gathers at water holes in Mole. The trade-off is heat: inland and northern afternoons often reach the high thirties Celsius, so pacing and air-conditioned travel matter.

How hot is Ghana in March?

Very warm. The coast sits in the low to mid thirties Celsius, while Kumasi, Tamale and the north regularly reach the high thirties. It is a dry heat rather than a humid one for most of the month, though the odd late thunderstorm can appear as the rains approach in April.

What happens on Independence Day?

On 6 March Ghana marks its 1957 independence with a national parade, school marches, drumming and speeches, centred on Black Star Square in Accra with celebrations across the country. Expect road closures near the routes and an early, crowded morning. It is a memorable occasion to witness if your dates allow.

Is March good for a Mole safari?

It is one of the best months. The dry season thins the bush and dries up smaller water sources, so elephants, antelope and warthogs concentrate at the remaining water holes and are easier to see, on foot with a ranger or by vehicle. The long drive north is more comfortable in an air-conditioned car.

How do I book a March trip with you?

Send your travel dates, number of nights and group size through the Plan my trip page or on WhatsApp. We reply with a suggested itinerary and a clear, itemised quote. A deposit secures the dates, and we then arrange the vehicle, driver-guide, hotels and any excursions such as Mole or the castles.

Is Ghana safe and reliable in March?

Ghana is among West Africa's most stable and welcoming countries, and we run these trips weekly with maintained, air-conditioned vehicles and experienced driver-guides. With normal precautions it is very comfortable. On March's longer up-country drives, having a private guide who manages the heat and the roads is a genuine advantage.

Written by Abdul, founder of Ghana Travel & TourI started this agency in Kasoa Opeikuma, Central Region, in 2020. Our drivers meet flights at Kotoka, our homes are the ones we let in Kasoa, and the routes described here are the ones we run ourselves.

What I know about Ghanaian travel comes from doing it: filing passport and visa applications, booking flights and hotels, collecting people from arrivals at two in the morning, and driving the Accra, Tema, Cape Coast and Kumasi runs week after week. Where this guide describes how something works, it is because we have done it.

Rules, fees and timetables in Ghana change. I have deliberately not quoted figures that go stale — where a number matters I name the office to confirm it with. If you spot something out of date, tell me and we will fix it.
