Private guided tour of the Volta Region
Wli Falls, the Afadja climb, the monkeys at Tafi Atome and Lake Volta — here is how a private Volta tour comes together from Accra.
The short answer
- The Volta Region packs waterfalls, mountains, monkeys and Lake Volta into one green corner east of Accra.
- Highlights include Wli Falls, Mount Afadja, the Tafi Atome monkeys and the Akosombo Dam.
- A private guide handles the winding roads and the short walks in to the falls and viewpoints.
- It works as a long day trip from Accra or, better, as a two to three day loop.
- The drier months make the trails and the drive far more comfortable than the wet season.
- Cost depends on days, group size, hotel standard and how far east you go — ask for a quote.

Why the Volta Region rewards a private guide
The Volta Region is Ghana's green corner, east of the great lake, and it is where the country goes hilly. The roads wind, the sights are spread out, and the best of them sit at the end of a short walk rather than beside a car park. That combination is exactly why a private guided trip works so well here — you are not wrestling with directions, parking or the local transport that peters out early. As a Kasoa-based team who run this route regularly, we handle the driving and the timing so you spend the day on the trails and the water, not the logistics.
It suits anyone who likes the outdoors: waterfalls you can stand under, a mountain you can actually climb, wild monkeys that come to your hand, and the vast calm of Lake Volta at Akosombo. If hiking is your main draw, our hiking in Ghana guide sets out what the walks involve.
What the tour covers

The headline is Wli Falls near Hohoe, the tallest in West Africa, reached by a flat forest walk to the lower fall or a stiff climb to the upper. Nearby, Mount Afadja (Afadjato) is Ghana's highest peak and a genuine, sweaty scramble with a real view at the top. At Tafi Atome, the true mona monkeys are protected by the village and will come close in the early morning.
There is more to fold in. Amedzofe sits high in the hills with the short, steep walk to Ote Falls and a viewpoint over the ranges; Tagbo Falls near Liati Wote is a quieter, prettier hike than Wli's crowds. The kente woven at Kpetoe in Agotime carries different patterns from the Ashanti cloth, and the Akosombo Dam that created Lake Volta is worth the stop for the sheer scale of it. Down at the coast, Ada Foah is where the river meets the sea, good for a slow final day on the water. It is a fuller region than many realise — comparable in spirit to the west, which our western region guide covers.
The journey from Accra
The drive east is part of the trip. From Accra we run out towards Akosombo and cross the Volta at the Adomi Bridge near Atimpoku, where the roadside grilled tilapia and one-man-thousand are a proper local lunch. From there the road climbs towards Ho, the regional capital, and on to Hohoe and the falls country.

As a long day trip it is doable but tight; a two or three day loop is far better, letting you catch the monkeys at dawn and stand under the falls without a clock-watching drive home. Basing a night in Ho or Hohoe turns the whole thing from a rush into a proper trip. The roads are mostly tarred but twist and climb through the hills, and after rain some of the approach tracks to the falls turn slick, so a driver who knows them earns their keep — our getting around Ghana guide is candid about why.
How we plan and price it
We keep it simple. Send us your dates, your group size and whether you want the hard climbs, the gentle falls, or a mix, and we build the route to match. One private, air-conditioned vehicle and a driver-guide stay with you throughout, and we sort the hotels in Ho or Hohoe to your chosen standard.
Pack for a little effort — decent shoes for Afadja, a swimsuit for Wli — and our Ghana packing list covers the rest; the drier months, which our best time to visit guide explains, make the trails easier. Cost tracks the real inputs: how many days, the distance, your group size and the standard of hotel, so we quote per trip rather than a fixed rate.
Plan your Volta Region tour
The Volta is one of the most rewarding regions in the country for anyone who likes their travel active and green, and it is close enough to Accra to be easy to reach. With the driving and the timing handled, you get the falls, the climb and the monkeys without the usual faff of getting there.
Tell us what you would most like to see and we will make the rest easy. Message Ghana Travel & Tour with your dates and we will take it from there.
Questions people ask
How do I book a Volta tour?
Send us your travel dates, group size and how active you want the trip. We shape the route, confirm the timings and any hotels, and send a clear quote. Once you confirm, the vehicle, driver and bookings are held for your dates.
What is included?
A private vehicle with a driver-guide, the planned route, and hotels to your chosen standard on multi-day trips. Site and guide fees at the falls and sanctuaries, plus meals, are set out in the plan so you know what is and is not covered.
Can I do it as a day trip from Accra?
You can, but it is a long, tight day for Wli or Afadja and back. We usually suggest two or three days so you catch the monkeys at dawn and the falls without rushing, though we will build the day trip if that is what your schedule allows.
Can the route be customised?
Yes. It is a private tour, so we tailor it — focus on hard hikes, keep it to gentle falls and the lake, add Ada Foah on the coast, or mix it all. Tell us your energy level and interests and we plan around them.
Is a deposit needed?
For a multi-day trip we usually ask for a deposit to secure the vehicle, driver and hotels, with the balance before or during the tour. A single long day trip can often be settled on the day. We state it clearly in the quote.
Is it safe, and are the walks hard?
The region is safe and welcoming, and we use maintained vehicles and drivers who know the hill roads. The walks range from the flat path to lower Wli to the steep Afadja climb, so we match the day to your fitness and are honest about what each one involves.
What I know about Ghanaian travel comes from doing it: filing passport and visa applications, booking flights and hotels, collecting people from arrivals at two in the morning, and driving the Accra, Tema, Cape Coast and Kumasi runs week after week. Where this guide describes how something works, it is because we have done it.
Rules, fees and timetables in Ghana change. I have deliberately not quoted figures that go stale — where a number matters I name the office to confirm it with. If you spot something out of date, tell me and we will fix it.
