Ghana shore excursions
A cruise call in Ghana gives you a single precious day ashore. Here is how to spend it well from Takoradi or Tema, with realistic plans and timing built around your ship.
The short answer
- Ghana's main cruise ports are Takoradi in the west and Tema near Accra.
- You usually have one day ashore, so a focused, private plan beats trying to do everything.
- From Takoradi, the western beaches and Nzulezo stilt village are within reach; Cape Coast is a fuller day.
- From Tema, Accra's highlights and a coastal day trip both work well.
- We are a Kasoa-based team and run private tours timed carefully to get you back well before all-aboard.
- Send your ship, port and dates for a tailored plan and an honest quote.

Ghana's cruise ports and your day ashore
Ghana welcomes cruise ships at two main ports: Takoradi in the Western Region and Tema, just east of Accra. Both are working ports, and from either you can reach some of the country's best sights within a single day — provided the day is planned well. The key is realism: you have limited hours ashore, so a focused private tour beats a rushed attempt to see everything. We would rather you enjoy two or three places properly than glimpse six through a car window.
As a Kasoa-based team who arrange these trips every week, we build shore excursions around the one number that matters most — your all-aboard time. Everything is timed backwards from it, with a comfortable buffer, so you are never anxious about the ship.

Tell us your ship, port and date and we will tell you honestly what is realistic in the time you have. If an excursion cannot be done safely within your window, we will say so plainly and suggest a better use of the day — we would never risk you missing the ship for the sake of squeezing in one more stop.
From Takoradi: beaches and the Western Region
Takoradi sits close to some of Ghana's most beautiful coast. Within a comfortable day you can reach the relaxed beaches at Busua, the surf and fishing village life of the west, and the remarkable stilt village of Nzulezo, reached by canoe across a lagoon. Our Western Region guide covers these in detail.
For a history-focused day, Cape Coast and Elmina are reachable from Takoradi, though it makes for a fuller drive — we will be candid about the timing so you can choose. See our castles guide and beaches guide for ideas.

Whatever you choose, we keep the plan tight and the return buffer generous. Roads in the Western Region are mostly good, but conditions and traffic vary, so we build in time for the unexpected rather than cutting it fine.
From Tema: Accra and the coast
Tema puts you within easy reach of Accra. In a single day you can take in the capital's markets, food, seafront and history, with a local driver-guide handling the traffic and the logistics. Our things to do in Accra guide is a good starting point for building a day.
Alternatively, a coastal run west towards Cape Coast is possible from Tema for those set on the castles, though it is a longer day and we will tell you plainly whether it fits your hours. Traffic leaving Accra can be heavy at certain times, so timing is everything, and a local driver-guide who knows the shortcuts is worth a great deal. For getting around, see our transport guide.
How our shore excursions work
Everything is private to your group — your own air-conditioned vehicle and a local driver-guide who knows the roads and the port. We meet you at the port gate, agree the plan and your all-aboard time, and build the day with a clear buffer so you return with time to spare. If your ship's schedule shifts, we adapt. Water, a comfortable vehicle and a driver who knows the route make a long port day far more enjoyable, and you can dip in and out of stops as the group's energy allows.
On cost, we do not publish a fixed price, because it depends on your group size, how far you travel from port and what you include. Larger groups usually lower the per-person cost, so if you can gather a few fellow passengers it often works out better for everyone. We will always confirm the plan and what is included before your call, so there are no surprises on the day, and we are happy to answer questions by message before you commit.
Book a reliable Ghana shore excursion
A cruise day in Ghana can be a real highlight when it is planned with the ship in mind. Travelling with a local team who time everything around your all-aboard means you relax and enjoy the day rather than watching the clock. We will be honest about what fits, and we will always leave a comfortable margin.
To get started, send us your ship name, port and call date, along with your group size and what you would most like to see. We will put together a realistic plan and an honest quote — request one and we will confirm the details. For inspiration, see our beaches guide and Accra day trips.
Questions people ask
How do I book a shore excursion?
Send us your ship name, port (Takoradi or Tema) and call date, plus your group size and interests, by message or WhatsApp. We build a plan timed to your schedule, share an itemised quote, and reserve it once you confirm.
Will I get back to the ship on time?
That is our first priority. We plan every excursion backwards from your all-aboard time with a comfortable buffer, and we adapt if the ship's schedule changes. We are always candid if a plan is too tight to be safe.
What is included?
A private shore excursion typically includes your air-conditioned vehicle and a local driver-guide for the day, with entries and stops as agreed. We confirm exactly what is and is not included before your call.
Can the day be customised?
Yes. Tell us whether you want beaches, history, city life or a mix, and we shape the day to fit — within what is realistic for your hours ashore. Nothing is off the shelf.
Is a deposit needed?
Terms vary, so we confirm the exact arrangement in writing with your quote rather than quoting figures here. Request a quote and we will set out any deposit and payment details clearly.
Is it safe and reliable?
Ghana is welcoming and travelling with a known local team is a reliable way to spend a port day. Use normal good sense, confirm current travel advice, and see our Ghana safety guide for practical tips.
What I know about Ghanaian travel comes from doing it: filing passport and visa applications, booking flights and hotels, collecting people from arrivals at two in the morning, and driving the Accra, Tema, Cape Coast and Kumasi runs week after week. Where this guide describes how something works, it is because we have done it.
Rules, fees and timetables in Ghana change. I have deliberately not quoted figures that go stale — where a number matters I name the office to confirm it with. If you spot something out of date, tell me and we will fix it.
