Why Ghana is an easy trip from Abidjan

Ghana and Cote d'Ivoire share a border, so this is the shortest, simplest trip on our list. For Abidjan residents, Ghana offers a change of language and rhythm without a long-haul flight: Anglophone Accra, coastal forts, and Ashanti country, all within a short reach. Plenty of Ivorians already cross for football, business and family, and the two countries feel closely woven along the coast.

There is a real Francophone community in Accra too, and many Ghanaians speak enough French to make you comfortable. If you want a genuine weekend abroad rather than a marathon journey, Ghana is hard to beat from Abidjan.

As a Kasoa-based team who run these trips every week, we handle the pickup, the language and the roads, whether you arrive by air or overland.

Flying or driving from Abidjan

By air, Abidjan to Accra is a short direct hop of about an hour. That makes it feasible to fly in on a Friday morning and be on the coast by the afternoon, which is why it works so well for a weekend. Overland is the other option, and a scenic one: the road runs west along the Ivorian coast to the Elubo border, then east through Takoradi and the fishing towns to Accra. Reckon on the best part of a day, and remember it hinges on border formalities and traffic, so build in real slack rather than a tight connection.

We do not post flight schedules or fares, since they shift constantly, and border rules can change too. Confirm current flights with the airlines, check the crossing requirements, and read our visa and ETA guide before you set a date. Whichever way you come, tell us your arrival point and time and we will be there to meet you, so the trip does not begin with a taxi negotiation.

What to see with the time you have

Because you are close, a short trip goes a long way. A weekend covers Accra plus a run west to Cape Coast and Elmina, where the coastal castles lay out the history of the transatlantic trade without flinching; give yourself a couple of unhurried hours at each. Add the Kakum canopy walk in the same area if you have a third day, going early before the school groups arrive.

Fishing towns like Winneba and the lagoon village of Nzulezo on stilts show a different side of the coast. Our castles guide and western region guide go deeper, and with a week you could fold in Kumasi using our 7-day itinerary.

How we run it on the ground

Our tours are private. That is an air-conditioned car, or a Hiace minibus for a group, plus a driver-guide who knows the coast road and the Kasoa-Winneba stretch that visitors always underestimate. We are based in Kasoa itself, right on the route west, so we are already ahead of the Accra traffic and can move quickly once you land or clear the border.

Private travel costs more than shared tro-tros and taxis, and we will not pretend otherwise. What you gain is time and ease, which matters most on a short trip where every hour counts. A driver who knows the coast road and, where it helps, a little French, smooths the whole thing, from ordering at a chop bar to reading the queue at a castle.

What it costs, plainly

You will not see a headline price on this page, and we would rather earn your trust than invent one. A fair quote depends on your trip: how many are travelling, the season, the standard of hotel you want and how much ground you cover. A one-night coastal dash and a full week reaching Kumasi are very different budgets.

Fuel, park fees, accommodation and the driver-guide's time all feed in, and Ghana's high and low seasons move hotel rates. For a wider view before you enquire, read our trip cost breakdown. Send your dates and group size and we will reply with a clear, itemised quote rather than a vague band.

Plan your Ghana trip from Abidjan

With Ghana next door, there is little standing between you and a proper weekend away. Confirm your flight or your crossing, then let us handle the ground: a clean vehicle, a driver-guide, and a route that fits the days you have.

Ready to go? Send your dates and group size on WhatsApp for a tailored quote, arrange an airport or border pickup, or browse our tours.

We never fabricate a price. Tell us your plan and we will send an honest, itemised quote and tell you what fits your time.

Questions people ask

How do I book a tour from Abidjan?

Send your dates and group size on WhatsApp or through the tours page. We reply with a tailored itinerary and an itemised quote, then confirm your pickup, whether you arrive by air or at the Elubo border.

What is included in a private tour?

Typically an air-conditioned vehicle, a driver-guide, fuel and park entry for planned stops, and your pickup. Hotels and meals can be included or left to you; we set it out clearly in the quote.

Can I do it in just a weekend?

Yes. Because Abidjan is so close, a weekend comfortably covers Accra and the coastal castles. We build the itinerary around exactly how much time you have.

Can you help with the overland crossing?

We can meet you on the Ghana side and drive you on to Accra. Border formalities themselves are handled by the authorities, so allow time and carry your documents; check current requirements before you travel.

Is a deposit needed?

We usually confirm with a deposit and settle the balance nearer your trip. The exact terms appear in your quote before you commit to anything.

Is it safe and reliable?

Ghana is a steady country for visitors, and we run these coastal routes weekly with our own vehicles and drivers. Read our safety guide and check current official travel advice before you set off.

Written by Abdul, founder of Ghana Travel & TourI started this agency in Kasoa Opeikuma, Central Region, in 2020. Our drivers meet flights at Kotoka, our homes are the ones we let in Kasoa, and the routes described here are the ones we run ourselves.

What I know about Ghanaian travel comes from doing it: filing passport and visa applications, booking flights and hotels, collecting people from arrivals at two in the morning, and driving the Accra, Tema, Cape Coast and Kumasi runs week after week. Where this guide describes how something works, it is because we have done it.

Rules, fees and timetables in Ghana change. I have deliberately not quoted figures that go stale — where a number matters I name the office to confirm it with. If you spot something out of date, tell me and we will fix it.
